Yeah, I swapped out the overdrive unit in a '83 245DL I had and I
remember they specified ATF. There shouldn't be too much crap in the
gearbox I'm putting in the 96 since it only has about 10k on the
rebuild, but I just want to be safe as it's been sitting. I'm looking
forward to having functional freewheel again.

ATF in their manual transmissions with overdrive. ATF is a high
pressure lubricant, but much thinner than regular gear oil. My old
boss in Maryland raced a Formula Vee and used two tubes of Molycoat
and half a can of ATF in his "long track" early 36-HP Bug transmission.
