Back when I was originally racing the red 93 with Randy Cook we had
the standard drum brakes on it. When set up properly with a matched
set of shoes, they stopped every bit as well as the disc brakes. I
think the only real advantages to the disc brakes are:

- little maintenance/no regular adjustment
- more readily available parts
- no need for drying in really wet weather

That's my $0.02

axle straps

Chip or Chuck, I got the straps and was able to loosen the fasteners.
Now as to what to do with the new ones? Do they just loop under the
axle ends or go thru the springs. It wasn't obvious to me since the old
ones were pretty much gone. John

They go in the brackets loosely and go under the axle to keep it from
falling down when you jack the car up. They should not be tight on the axle
with all wheels on the car.

There could be some grease or brake fluid on the shoes on one corner,
or one cylinder may not be moving smoothly, or the adjuster might not
be as tight on one wheel.

I drove a stroker with drum brakes one winter and they seemed to stop
fairly well, though not as well as the discs on my '67 V-4.

Also more resistance to fade after hard repeated applications. When a
brake drum gets hot, its expansion moves it farther away from the
shoes, reducing braking effectiveness. When a brake disc gets hot,
its expansion moves it CLOSER to the pads, preserving braking
effectiveness.

They're also easier to modulate, i.e., respond more readily to
changes in pedal pressure.

All that said, a well-designed drum setup (which SAAB had) should
provide more than adequate stopping power for any kind of normal
driving. If it doesn't, as Chuck said, it means something is wrong
with your brake system... not simply that you need to switch to discs.

They loop under the end of stub on which the spring seat is mounted.
The manual says they should protrude beyond the clamps by 0.6" (15mm).

The new straps should be 40 cm long and stick out 15 mm beyond the fastening
clamps, see "A" in http://members.home.nl/saab96/techtip/strap.jpg
With an unloaded 95/96, standing on its wheels, there should be about 9 cm
space between the strap and the axle stub.

Re: axle straps

-Thanks for the directions on the straps. That should be pretty clear
and I was lucky that the brackets were not rusted tight so I should be
in good shape on the install. John Heckman-- In

Re: axle straps

john,
if you are stopping by on friday, wait and see how
they are routed on my race car as an example. mine
are shorter than a street car's would be! but routing
is the same. yes, your car's straps were not just
badly deteriorated, but one was literally hanging by 1
end and i cut that dangling piece off the car when it
was here last.
the straps limit the amount of "drop" the rear axle
has when the car is jacked up or on a lift.

chuck.
