Arun cruising 2008 part 6 (XP)

Sat May 31st - 15 miles, 6 furlongs, 21 locks - Kilby to
Hope & Anchor Bridge, River Soar
Total cruising time 8 hours 45 minutes.

Started off from our overnight mooring above Wigston Top lock at 7.50am.
Stopped for 20 minutes for Thetfordry duty at Kilby Bridge before the
final run into Leicester. The padlocking of locks along this section is
a real pain, although I suppose it must be quicker than finding an empty
pound in front of you. Nothing much going over the weirs after we
joined the Soar, so it looks like we should be okay for that tomorrow.
Stopped in Leicester for a bit of retail therapy (Somerfields) before
heading out to the North of the city. Slightly alarming moment when
going down in Limekiln lock. There are one or two bosses standing proud
of the lock wall, and the base plate must have caught on one of those
because the boat started heeling over alarmingly before freeing itself
and assuming the traditional upright stance. No damage done to the boat
and no breakages inside. Incident free run after that to Hope & Anchor
bridge where we have moored for the night just before the bridge.
Unfortunately I didn't spot that this is a "Hungry Horse" pub which
proudly displays its Greene King sign. We did venture in for a pint
later on in the evening, but left after one as the place was no better
than expected

Arun cruising 2008 part 7 (XP)

Sun Jun 1st - 18 miles, 6 furlongs, 12 locks - Hope & Anchor Bridge,
       River Soar to Trent Lock
Total cruising time 8 hours 5 minutes.

Cool and overcast this morning when we set off at 7.50am. This soon
turned to light rain by the time we got to the first lock. As we
approached Mountsorrel lock we could see that both top gates were open.
The two narrowboats breasted up on the lock moorings evidently decided
that they'd better get going, so the chap started waving at us to stop
and wait while he got his engine started, cast off and manoeuvred into
the lock. We caught up with them again at Barrow Deep, but fortunately
they pulled over looking for a cashpoint. Two day boats arrived while
we were waiting for Barrow Deep, so the three of us ended up going down
together. Pillings Flood lock was being used (about 1 inch drop), and
the three of us shared this as well. Seemingly endless fishing match
between here and Loughborough meant a long slow crawl for a while. Got
to Loughborough around mid-day, but didn't see the day boats again.
They'd probably stopped at the first open pub, although the crew of one
boat were already sounding well oiled. Uneventful run down to Trent
Lock, meeting boats coming in the other direction at each lock. The
river was well in the green zone at each of the level boards I checked
and Kegworth Shallow and Ratcliffe locks were both open so my worries
about the Soar were, on this occasion, unfounded. Passed between a
number of sailing dinghies at Trent Lock before crossing the Trent and
going up Trent Lock. Moored for the night at 3.55pm a few boats along
from Trent Lock. A trip report generated mini-GiG with Brian and Sue
Dominic this evening - not sure which pub we will be in, I will defer to
Brian's judgement on that one.

Shoestring Crick 2008 Cruise

Sorry it's all in one lump, but I didn't have time to write and post
it as we went along, as you can appreciate when you see the timings!
:-)

Tuesday 20th May
Northolt to Bulls Bridge
4 miles, 0 locks

After doing a 12 hour shift at work, I started to get the boat ready.
Dad was driving down from Hull, and was due to arrive at around 8pm. I
asked him to call me when he reached the McDonald's on Target
roundabout (where he stopped for tea), but he called once he'd
finished rather than when he was waiting for his order so I had to
rush to get the boat to the wharf to load up!

We reached Bull Bridge at 21:47, and after a shop at Tesco's got back
to the boat at 22:30.

Wednesday 21th May
Bulls Bridge to Bushes Lock
27 miles, 40 locks

We left Bulls Bridge at 07:10 and I made best speed North (well sort
of West-North-West to start with) along the canal. Dad was still in
bed, but he did get up before the lock at Cowley. The first bit to
Rickmansworth always seems to take some time, but we finally passed at
12:30 doing the lock in 4 minutes. We hadn't shared a lock all the way
up, and were only delayed by boats coming down.

Dad wanted to watch Apprentice, but I wasn't bothered so single handed

Thanks Tim, that's great! I'll be able to put it on my log if
Cheshire~Rose lets me.

WRG99 Review

Hi Folks,

I've finally got around to putting all parts of the WRG Review from
Worcester 1999 on youtube. I've made a playlist that will play in
order:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=BE4357D63D07DA7D

For those that can, please enjoy, for those that can't, please don't! :-)

...and remember, you can donate money to WRG at any time you like...

It certainly gets funnier as the night wears on (and the beer supply
is steadily reduced).

Cheers,

Mike

Rudder Judder

New boat, new prop with slight-to-moderate rudder judder from tick-over
upwards.

How can I cure this? Ask builder to change prop?

Regards,

Callum.

Oh boy - here we go! The experts will be along in a minute, but
meantime:

If it appears throughout the range of prop speeds, does this suggest a
problem in the drive train somewhere? When you turn the prop shaft by
hand, does it bind at any point, suggesting that the engine is not
aligned with the shaft properly?

Does the engine vibrate when the boat is out of gear?

It it's only at certain speeds, presumably this is like prop sing, and
will have to be experimented with by changing the prop/filing material
off the trailing edges, etc etc.

I look forward to an interesting thread ;-0

RE: Rudder Judder

Oh - I didn't imagine this could be such a can of worms Bruce. Basically the
answer is "no" to your questions - I get the feeling it's the prop.

I need to get educated so that I can report the issue to the factory and
insist on them fixing it. My hand is still shaking from last 20 hours on the
tiller!

Callum.

While others were busy thinking outside the box, I cut it up because I
needed some cardboard for a project I was making.

A day of Rain (and more rain)

Simon arrived from Salford for a day of R&R and so I took the opportunity to
do a Di Blasi-less car shuffle before we set off. Through Big Lock we then
pulled onto the waterpoint for a fill and were overtaken by two other boats
who followed us down through the lock. As an Alvechurch craft arrived to use
the lock, the crew got a bow line ashore but were drifting across the cut. I
asked the steerer to throw me a line and he did just that! I then had to
throw the looped end back to him so he could put it over the dolly and then
I pulled them in. Once the watertank was full, we set off and the rain
started. Only light drizzle at first but it became heavier and heavier as
the day continued. The two boats in front were going at a slower pace than
Jannock is comfortable with but there was not enough difference to try and
overtake so we settled to a steady speed. Before Northwich, the first boat
pulled over and then we were un-ceremoniously rammed by a Black Prince
hireboat panicking as he'd just met the boat in front of us on a bend. This
boat then stopped as they had lost a painted can off their roof into a tree
and so we continued on at a slightly better rate after that. I was
disappointed to find all of the visitor moorings at Anderton are now either
24 or 48 hour only so we had to continue on before finally mooring up.
