It used to be the situation that if you get to the box office early, when it opens, you can get restricted view
seats very cheap.

BW check on boat yards. They can check on the number of people who say they moor and the number the marina is
supposed to have. They also go round marinas checking licences. There are exceptions, namely boats said
to be on non BW waters & some marinas on the system that have old agreements that don't allow BW access.

Those are the best ones then ;-)  At my last marina, I estimate less than 
40% of the boats (about 150 total) were licensed....

Arun Cruise '06 - Day 30 - Next stop the GiG

Day 30 - Sunday July 30th - Barbridge Junction to Wheelock
16 miles 2 furlongs, 11 locks, 8 hours 30 minutes

Set off at 9.30am, back to the Junction.  Made a complete fist of 
turning into the Middlewich Arm, told an onlooker that it was an example 
of bump-steering. :-)  There was a queue of three boats waiting to go 
down at Cholmondeston lock, resulting in a 25 minute delay.  Through 
Minshull lock at 11.35am, having caught up the hire boat in front. 
Passed Pete's place by Nanneys Bridge - forgot it was his (Sorry Pete, 
I'd have stopped if I'd remembered).  Was back behind the hire boat at 
both Stanthorne and Wardle locks, arriving at Middlewich Junction at 
2.30pm.  No sign of the old girl who used to lord it over boaters 
passing through "her" lock (Wardle lock), has she passed on?  It must 
have been many years since I last came by this way.  Crept out of the 
Junction and turned right, to find King's lock sat completely empty with 
gates open, and a boat just coming under the bridge from the Preston 
Brook direction who also had that lock in his sights.  Oh well, those 
are the breaks, sometimes they go your way and sometimes they don't. 
Today it was my turn. :-)  Straight into King's lock and a chat with the 
guy behind me.  Turns out he was single handing as well and making for 
Wheelock for the night.  As I was leaving the lock we saw another boat 
heading for it, so the other guy waited for him to go down.  Trouble 
free run through the remaining four locks.  Met a boat in a bridge hole 
just before Wheelock.  He was pushing on quite quickly, but can't have 
been paying attention, as I was already part way through the bridge. 
When I saw him I went into full reverse, as did he.  We avoided each 
other, although he did end up ramming the bank by a tree.  I had to tow 
him backwards out of the tree as he wasn't able to free himself.  The 
only moorings available in Wheelock were before the bridge, and I'd gone 
past those before finding the rest were full.  I ended up going up the

Bloody hell Debbi, I'm impressed. Leighton Buzzard to Warwick in two 
days!  I make that something like 65 miles and 52 wide locks.  You won't 
have much time for drinking you know :-)

Sorry to have missed you Terry, you passed our house between bridges 30
& 31, however Tam Lin is not moored at the bottom of the garden as she
is away, in Newbold, being blacked. I am pleased to say Maureen is still
at Wardle lock cottage and I am sure she would have been sorry to have
missed you too :-)she is an extremely interesting person and a good
friend, however she does speak her mind if you do something silly in
'her' lock :-)

Arun Cruise '06 - Day 31 - Next stop the GiG

Day 31 - Monday July 31st - Wheelock to Kidsgrove
6 miles 2 furlongs, 23 locks, 6 hours 5 minutes

Early start today (5.45am), as I wanted to get as much of the flight 
done as possible before the mass of hirers set off.  Turns out I wasn't 
the first to set off after all, as there was a couple on a hire boat 
coming up the lock behind me as I set off.  Probably fairly annoying for 
them, but if they had been out of the lock before I'd cast off I would 
have let them past.  I chatted with them a bit at several of the locks 
and they were OK about it.  If I had left a lock and shut the gate and 
there was nothing coming the other way I would raise one of the bottom 
paddles for them.  Equally, at some locks the chap off the hire boat 
went forward to raise the paddles for me.  When I got to lock 56 there 
was another hire boat already going up in the lock.  A family of three 
on this one, but they would all climb on board after each lock before 
moving to the next one, tying up and then setting it.  Exactly the sort 
of boat I didn't want in front of me.  Should have got up earlier. 
There was some talk in another thread about the state of the doubled 
locks, so I kept a record as I came up the flight.  Out of the 26 locks 
which between Wheelock and Hardings Wood Junction, I found 11 where both 
locks were available for use, 8 where one of the locks was out of use 
and 7 where only one lock is present.  The longest run of working paired 
locks was 3 somewhere near the top of the flight.  I decided to stop 
just above lock 42, as I was planning on visiting the Blue Bell pub for 
lunch.  The rain started just as I was tying up (11.50am).  Typically, 
the Blue Bell is shut all day on Mondays - should have read the book 
more carefully.  Inevitably, other boats set off between me and the hire 
boat that was initially directly behind me, and they passed me about an 
hour after I had moored.  Decided not to move on again today, as I had a 
number of things that needed doing in the afternoon.  Went to the Red
