Both my boats travel at about 2mph on tickover, and I very rarely get
shouted at - but there are always some people that are never happy!

The GPS readout on mine is very accurate as it gives speed to 2
decimal places - though of course the error is greater than this
accuracy. Some GPSs round the figures down, or in the case of my Dad's
old GPS won't work below 1.5 mph, and think its stopped.

Maximum speed on a canal like the Leciester Section was usually about
3.5mph on the better bits, 3mph on the chesterfield, and 4mph is
possible on most of the bigger deeper canals like the GU.

I know where you mean Steve . . . Lime Kiln I think.

Wharfhouse at the bottom of Braunston locks have also been very
helpful. And it's £21 a litre !

Would this be the reason some are being shouted at when passing at
2mph?

If anyone is getting shouted at for passing moored boats at 2 mph
their boat must have a similar underwater shape to a 3 ft deep brick?
I don't think your purchase of a GPS has anything to do with the
abuse from moored boats :-)

Moi? I am merely agreeing with the views expressed by another member of this
list. Do I perchance discern a slight whiff of guilt in your posting?
Perhaps engendered by the alacrity with which the sleek-bowed Uncle Mort has
been recently skidding along in the deep waters of the G&S?

Whiff of guilt ? Down on the G&S there is no need to slow down. Folks
often ask passing boats to speed up so they can enjoy the merest hint
of rocking.

I think that depends on the speed and the boat, just thinking back to
Seven Rescue in their RIB at the festival and the sinking of a boat on
the junction, or a few years earlier when someone intended to make a
locking at Sharpness and caused quite a bit of damage on the way.

I'm not aware of any problem with a narrowboat. Most go past at full
speed, and who are we not to conform with local custom & practice.
