Re: Dream Tour suggestion: Step-through lugged 531 Dawes Mixte

that looks like a good candidate for Mary, if it's not too tall.

It is a good quality touring bike with cantilever brakes (good for
stopping in all weather). There is a good spread between the
chainrings (the thingies that the chain goes around by the pedals) and
the freewheel ( the cogs attached to the rear hub) looks like it has a
34 tooth cog (good for hills). The rear rack is a solid touring rack
and the handlebars look comphy.

It seems that the best strategy with e-bay is to sit on the side
lines & watch the bidding and then swoop in at the last minute with a
carefully considered winning bid. If you enter the fray early on,
you'll just push the price up.

The seller is in London, so shipping would be reasonable.

However I agree with other posters who recommend purchasing a suitable
bike through one's local bike shop, to ensure proper fit and all the
other advice & service that they provide.

Sugru

Hi all,

Check this stuff out- www.sugru.com. It's sort of like a cross between Goo
p and
modeling clay. Looks very handy for hacking my bike or pretty much anythin
g
else. I'm going to throw some in my kit, as it seems like it might be just
the thing for emergency repairs.

Re: Fire starter -was: chopping & splitting -was: Hatchet on tour ?

I talked to the northwood hunters in my family and
they thought I should learn some knife using tips for
making stakes and starting fire when its wet out. It
was nice they didn't want me to freeze while bicycling
during this freezing cold winter season. -Mark Hoagy

 caveat emptor,
those 2 thin tubes as a top tube substitute Mixte frames when made
of lightweight 531, get pretty noodly fitted one for an ex-gf a
Mercian, the handlebars can torque the headtube and move the front
wheel a couple inches out of track, with out much effort .

the design with one larger tube , and then 2 bracing tubes from seat
tube mid section to dropout.. would be a better type IMHO.

Traveling plans change again.

I thought I would be able to leave again the 14th.I did get my bottom brac
ket looked at yesterday and it was just loose. I will get a lower gear nex
t week and see how riding loaded up hills is and maybe it will make it eas
ier pedaling

Life has dealt me a hand I was not expecting so my trip is put on hold til
at least after the first of the year. My daughter who was an RN with a MM
S and I just stayed a month with her in September while she was recovering
from surgery on her rotator cuff(shoulder) decided that the pain was unbe
arable and she couldn't take it any longer. She had been in pain from 2 ac
cidents( about 4 years) she was a passenger in the cars and both time same
problem. One shoulder and a couple years later the other shoulder. She pu
t a bullet in her brain Sunday and now I have to deal with that. I will go
to son in laws funeral Thurday( he had pancreatic cancer) and Friday to
her house . She feels no more pain but now I bear that pain. She was not
married so I am her next of kin and have to do what ever is done from now
on with her stuff. I will bring her ashes home when I come back after the
week end and then go back during Christmas vacation from school with my
son and get her house ready to sell. Not exactly how I intended to spend
Christmas. Plan the plans but not the results. Life can really mess up yo
ur plans sometimes. Fran

Kickbike

I've been commuting on my Kickbike to work. While looking for their website
to send to an interested co worker, I see Kickbike is having a fabulous
sale. Less than half price for a new Kickbike!

http://www.kickbikeamerica.com/index.html

I've owned mine for . . . 10ish years. People have ridden Kickbikes on
Ride the Rockies and even cross country, but those are true animals. My
average Kickbike speed is 8 mph and the longest distance I've gone was 20
miles. I was totally wiped out after that 20 miles.

I enjoy Kickbiking most in the winter. I start sweating from exertion right
away. In the winter I don't overheat and I can get a good workout in a short
period of time.

If you are interested in another 'wheeled' method of transportation,
consider a Kickbike. Especially at these prices.

No financial interest, just a satisfied customer.

RE: Kickbike

I've never seen this before. I am definitely interested, this looks like fun
and it would be great for the paved Florida trails.

Re: Kickbike

I remember reading about someone riding one in Paris Brest Paris. He made it in under the time limit.
