upgrades to turn it into a nice touring rig.

The Cycle for Life Tour

Robert started his "Cycle for Life" tour from Houston, TX on December
30, two days earlier than the original plan. I had e-mailed him
suggesting I might ride along for a few miles. He had e-mailed back
advising of his early start. Robert spent the first night of his tour
in Alvin, TX and I phoned him the next morning. We agreed to meet along
the highway that runs between Alvin and Galveston, his planned
destination for his second night. (I live about 20 miles from Alvin and
30 from Galveston.)

We met up as planned and rode together for 20-30 miles, finally crossing
the causeway onto Galveston Island where we parted company. Robert
headed toward the beach to look for a spot to camp and I made a U turn
and headed toward home.

Until recently and for about the past two years, the Galveston causeway
had been undergoing re-construction and was unsafe (in my humble
opinion) for bicycle traffic (over a mile long, two narrow lanes in each
direction, no shoulders, no place to duck, and traffic flowing at 50-60
mph). But as of quite recently the work was completed. The rebuilt
causeway is fully open and there are three or four lanes in each
direction and wide shoulders. So no problem.

Apparently Robert's first day went smoothly and all was going well when
we parted company the afternoon of his second day. For me it was a
delightful day's ride.

Robert told me he had no experience bicycle touring and that everything
he knew about it he learned from reading PHRED. So you guys deserve a
lot of credit for sharing your knowledge and experience. I recently
completed my first solo bicycle tour of one week, 500+ miles (credit

Re: rear lights

I run two custom made flashers, 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 3/4" set in clear
epoxy. One has 36 LEDs and the other 44 LEDS. They flash at
differing rates always changing. They are attached to a bracket
attached to my trunk bag and though it's not light, they are powered
off of a Nite Sun water bottle battery (in the bag) and run close to
a month, running night and day.
The trunk bag goes back and forth between tandem of triplet depending
which bike is ridden that day.

Re: OT: Acer Aspire One (was Re: MSI Wind Netbook)

I got suckered by a nasty attack of genuine consumerism (to which I
thought I was immune) and bought one of those aspire one saffire deals
from amazon before I knew it.

Got it in, fiddled with it a bit, thought it was pretty neat, and since
the mrs was having foot surgery the next week, and would be couch bound
for a few weeks, that it would be just the thing. So, I gave it to her,
set it up to stream folk alley and it was a hit, so I bought one for me.
Set it up to dual boot the original win xp home set up, and ubuntu 8.10
(which I am using now, and use most of the time, unless i have to do
something win specific).

I like it *alot*. less than $400, 160g hd, 6-cell battery, 6+hours
untethered, a gig of ram, and a usable display, and *almost*
pocketsized. AND, the suspend, hibernate and wireless work, even in linux.

Yeah, fellow at work has the MSI wind, and it's nice, but it's also
-in my opinion- crossed the line from netbook to laptop, and if I wanted
a laptop, I'd have gotten a different machine.

WTB: wheel magnet (model #166-5120) for CATEYE VELO 1 bicycle computer

I am looking to buy a wheel magnet for my CATEYE VELO 1 (circa 2000) bicycl
e computer.
I was looking through my parts drawer and did not find one. Darn bicycle g
remlins !

My daughter wants me to place a bicycle computer on her bicycle this mornin
g for the new
year' s mileage on her bicycle. She proclaims that she want to ride 1500 m
iles. I am sure
that she will reach that long before the year's end, IMHO. A great new'
s year's resolution,
I must say !

Let me know, if you have one that is in good to excellent condtion.

Wishing an optimistic Happy New Year to all with more miles under your tire
s than before,
Kim

Try your LBS, most of them should carry wheel magnets for under $5. If not
Performance Bicycle has them for $3 plus S+H.

Re: wheel magnet (model #166-5120) for CATEYE VELO 1 bicycle computer

I taped a circular magnet on for my old Cateye (circa something or other.
It's old) I moved the pickup to where the spokes cross so the magnet won't
flip around. Works great.
