touring@... has moved, this is the last email to the old address

The Bicycle Touring list has moved to Google Groups. This will be the last email address to the old system.

To continue getting list email you must join the new list. You can do so by going to
http://groups.google.com/group/bicycletouring
OR by sending email to
bicycletouring+subscribe@...

Users are not automatically being moved to the new lists.

The Bicycle Touring list is what got me to start hosting mailing lists in the first place, after it needed a
new home on December 15th, 1999. Over 11 years later there have been hundreds of thousands of emails
between thousands of recipients on this list, helping get new and veteran cyclists excited about bicycle
touring. I'm glad to have been so involved in the list, and I'm glad to see it continuing on in a new form. I'll
see you on the Google Group.

thanks,
Alex Wetmore

REI'S presta tubes don't have the nuts or the threads.. I haven't used them yet but have read pro and con about
them. I thought you needed the nut to keep the stem tight. Mine have come loose at times so I just tighten them
back up.

Weight weenies see them as unnecessary weight and out they go.

I have a tent I just love but don't like the light orange and white on it. It It is too bright and you can't hide
very well with it. The fly is what I need to change. I didn't know if anything would even change the color
since it repels water. I wanted to camoflauge it and thought of food coloring but thats just green water so
it would probable just run off. I don't want to ruin it but really want a different color. It would be nice and
bright if I was lost and someone from the air was looking for me but that will never be the case. The tent is no
longer made. Any ideas??

"Miles, I hear ya! I run a shop also and have stock sitting there that was ordered in by someone and never
picked up. This stuff builds up over time until we have a Saturday morning sale and generally sell it for
less than what it cost us.

A sports shop I frequent in Germany has a way round that problem: whenI have ordered from them, I have to pay a
50% deposit at the time, plus sign a contract agreeing to purchase the item. I presume that if I didn`t turn
up to pick up an item, they would bill me for it anyway, via my credit card .

On somewhat short notice because my schedule allows it, I am planning to ride cross country from
Jacksonville, FL to Santa Barbara, CA in April/May/June. I have purchased the Southern Tier maps and am
also mapping sections on my own to see friends/family along the way. Does anyone know a great bike shop or
bike tech near me between Philly and New York City? Willing to travel. I have an older Miyata road bike and a
newish Trek road bike -- and need some help to get bike and gear ready pronto. Suggestions welcomed!

Thanks all -- I have been enjoying this listserv for several weeks now.

Miles,
I hear ya!
I run a shop also and have stock sitting there that was ordered in by someone and never picked up. This stuff
builds up over time until we have a Saturday morning sale and generally sell it for less than what it cost us.
How many times we have sat there waiting for the customer to come pick up the tube, or pump, or whatever I can't
remember, but what I do know is I appreciate the guy who does that for me so we do it for our customers.
The online pricing seems absurd to me. We deliberately try to keep parity with on line product and generally
can, albiet with reduced margin, but it means our customers can come down for a ride, a coffee and a talk
about this weekends ride and still get what they want (if we have it in stock).
No matter, however, how much stock you carry someone always wants the item you don't have and then gets upset
because you don't have it.
It's a real balancing act to try to have what most people need whilst not filling your store with parts that
won't sell.
In short, support your LBS and try to work with them, as Miles says, the owner is usually a passionate cyclist
and understands what you want and will most times try their best to make your day a good one.

Fran,

A few observations that may help. Generally speaking when you send to a
Google list, you as the sender don't get a copy of what you sent, they
figure that you already know what you sent so why waste the bandwidth.

I know that I found all the test emails yesterday rather annoying, my
preference is to wait until I have something to say and then figure out if
the system is working, but for me it's a nice to have rather than a must
have or life and death importance newsgroup.

Other things to consider:
Are you sending from the same email account that you registered into the
Google Group with?
Many of us have multiple email accounts and after a while we forget that
they are different.

Time to go ride in the snow ;-)

Dear Touring People:

Once, while on a day ride with my usual riding group, the older guys
with us got all nostalgic because these particular bathrooms had genuine
Boraxo powdered soap in the soap dispensers. Good thing too -- someone
always seems to be getting a flat there. In part because often when
we're there we're stopping for a picnic lunch, so the slow leaks have
time go go down all the way. Lots of hands get a little bit greasy.
We're communal tire changers :)

What's your best "I found this in the bathroom while riding" soap story?
