Liverpool LUG meeting with Sam Tuke - Free Software Vs. Open Source: how much freedom is enough? - Wednesday 7th March 2012

On Wednesday, 7th March 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group will be
meeting. Sam Tuke of the Free Software Foundation Europe¹ will be
giving a talk entitled "Free Software Vs. Open Source: how much
freedom is enough?" An abstract follows:

At what point does advocating freedom become tyrannical? Freedom to
use the license we want, or freedom from certain kinds of
restrictions? Can't we let the license suit the purpose? As long as
I'm able to choose what I use, what's the problem? Can't we all just
  get along?

These questions and more will be addressed in a talk about the
relationship between the two major traditions: Free Software and
Open Source. The relevance of the debate to society, the impact on
developers, and the history of the movement will all be addressed
during discussion of these difficult subjects.

We will meet at the Liverpool Social Centre² at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm
start. After the talk, we will venture to Studio 2³ for beverages and
further discussion.

Liverpool Social Centre is next door to the News from Nowhere bookshop
on Bold Street⁴. To access the centre, press the bell for the
basement on the left of the door and someone will come up and let you in.

This promises to be another fascinating talk :-)

Fri 16 Mar: KoreaBeer geek social

On Friday 16 March a number of us from various geek groups will be going
for a Korean food social at Koreana[1] on King Street West (just off
Deansgate). We'll be meeting outside the restaurant just before 7:30pm
and going straight in for a meal.

There's a set banquet for around £20/head to give a rough idea of the
costs - full menu is on the website.

Everyone is welcome to attend, but if you would like to attend please
email me by 6pm, Wednesday 14 March so that I can book for the correct
number.

Hope to see you there!

Follow-up: MFS Talk. Tues, 21 Feb. "Git: How Linux, the kernel, is developed." by Michael Dorrington

I recommend that you start with:

The Git Parable
     http://tom.preston-werner.com/2009/05/19/the-git-parable.html

Git from the bottom up
     http://ftp.newartisans.com/pub/git.from.bottom.up.pdf

Now "Git from the bottom up" does refer to some commands that have
changed but it gives you a really good understanding of all the bits
which really helps.

Then go onto the documentation site on git's website:
     http://git-scm.com/documentation

Among lots of other things this has the "Pro Git" book which looks good,
though I've only had a little look at it. You can buy a printed copy of
it too.

Practical:

1. Clone a git repo of something you are interested in, for instance,
pick something from http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/ .
2. Browse around your cloned repo. Have a look at how they've used
branches and tags. Have a look at the commit logs.
3. Switch between branches. Verify a tag (if signed). Check out the tag.
4. Find a bug in the cloned repo text/code, create a branch to fix it
in, fix and submit patch. :)

yay! Well done Mike! There will be two Free software stalls at the festival this year (as you know I have also arranged one as part of my "festival bridge" twinning project with the Green Light in Leicester) so there will be a really strong presence and message about the importance and benefits, both social and environmentally, of free software. I am really feel like we have worked as a solid team on this, and that we should all feel proud that the free software community in Manchester is united, and puts the cause of free software first and foremost. Sounds good. I remember downloading the windows version of Pure Data after attending a (free) talk on it at
Future Everything in 2010. It wouldn't run :-(

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any free sessions at FE any more. http://futureeverything.org/

Re: Fwd: [Debian-uk] Alternative Computing event

Any news on this alternative computing show? Should it be up north I'll definitely be attending and will seriously consider it if its elsewhere in the country too, if someone else is willing to share travel costs with me.

I should have quite a interesting contribution to make to the show myself by May if it is going ahead.
