federated social web - diaspora and friendika testing

Hi there,

I'm staying with r7 at the moment here - http://elsmussols.org - which
is great - kind of an ongoing hacktionlab, field, solar 24v set up with
no tat down envisaged.

He's using friendika and getting on well with it. So I'm going to give
it a go. I reckon some of you people should as well as then we could
share thoughts on what bits we like and find useful and things that just
don't really work (useful for the 'tech tools for activism' next edition)

http://friendika.hipatia.net/profile/mickfuzz
this is an open to sign up service..

I'm also trying out diaspora here https://nesc.io/people/583

In theory sharing and friend requests etc work between the two systems
and different pods- and I've had luck in doing this although some things
are easier to do than others.

One think that I'm finding it difficult to do is to send people private
messages between diaspora pods. anyone had any luck with that?

Also - because I'm lazy - what I really want to do is push my status.net
and wordpress stuff to friendika / diaspora - I don't even know if
that's possible. i'm here on that http://indy.im/m3shrom

nice one

Re: [HacktionLab] federated social web - diaspora and friendika testing

Been playing around with both friendica and diaspora myself

and

https://friendika.openmindspace.org/profile/benx

While there isn't a way to feed an rss feed into your diaspora profile, I know on friendica you can subscribe to webpages as if they are just another user profile and it will take status updates from the RSS feed in the head tag of the HTML,

Contacts -> Add New Contact

Enter the address for the blog you wish to follow.

Hit Connect

Friendika seems to connect to Diaspora okay, using username-dvOJFz/+Tzw@public.gmane.org in the same box on the Contacts page

Havn't had any luck linking with Status.net other than pulling it's RSS feed.

Apparently you can post to status.net from friendica though according to friendica.com/features

Ta,
Ben

Liverpool LUG meeting with Sebastian Arcus collecting phone compatibility data - Wednesday 7th December 2011

On Wednesday, 7th December 2011, the Liverpool Linux User Group will
be meeting. This month there is no talk as such, but Sebastian Arcus
will lead us in an effort to acquire data on the compatibility of
bluetooth-enabled mobile phones with the Asterisk free software PBX¹.

Of interest is the functionality of phones operating as a handset, a
phone line, and an SMS sender or receiver. We will attempt to add as
many rows as possible to the table here:

  http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/chan_mobile

So says Sebastian,

  "What you need to do:

  1. Find, beg, borrow or, err, borrow as many different bluetooth
enabled mobiles of any sort you can. We mainly need mobiles that
either don't show on the wiki page above, or the ones which show
with a question mark and can do with more testing. Even older models
are important - as this application involves a phone sitting next to
an Asterisk box and can be plugged into its charger permanently (old
batteries are not a problem). So if a model proves to be
particularly suitable - people will go on Ebay and source older
models or re-use stuff lying around doing nothing.

  2. Bring the mobile with you - including a charger in case it is an
older mobile which doesn't hold charge very well."

We will meet at the Liverpool Social Centre² at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm
start. After the data collection efforts, we will venture to Studio 2³
for beverages and further discussion.

Liverpool Social Centre is next door to the News from Nowhere bookshop
on Bold Street⁴. To access the centre, press the bell for the
basement on the left of the door and someone will come up and let you
in.

A reminder will be sent closer to the date. See you there :-)

Please feel free to forward this to those that would welcome it.

The 3rd Tuesday of the Month is very near Christmas and Madlab will be
closed for the Christmas period, so we will have our December 2011

This meeting is our Christmas Party but we will use the opportunity to
review the year gone and discuss next year.

Fwd: Help us make LibrePlanet 2012 a success!

As you may know, MFS are part of LibrePlanet, the global free software
community.

# Help us make LibrePlanet 2012 a success!

**The dates have been announced for our next conference -- March 24th
and 25th 2012, at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. A call for
papers has also been announced. The conference will include talks from
the FSF staff and board, GNU project contributors, and other members
of the global free software community. I hope you will join us!**

Since 2009, the Free Software Foundation has run an annual conference
in the Boston area for free software developers, activists, and the
FSF's own associate members. This conference grew out of a smaller
members-only event which ran successfully for six years.

The conference has featured many free software luminaries over the
years, including FSF president Richard Stallman, Eben Moglen of the
Freedom Box Foundation and Software Freedom Law Center, EFF co-founder
John Gilmore, GNOME Foundation executive director Karen Sandler,
Jeremy Allison of the Samba project, Selena Deckelmann of PostgreSQL,
Máirín Duffy of Fedora, and veteran GNU developer Rob Savoye.

We are planning the upcoming conference in the midst of our annual
winter fundraiser, the time of year when we work the hardest at
inviting new people to become FSF associate members. Our associate
members are the most important means of financial support for the Free
Software Foundation -- individuals in our community, making a
financial commitment to software freedom. Because we want the
conference to be an opportunity for these free software supporters to
meet each other, our associate members can attend the conference
without charge.

At last year's event, I promised we would make this conference bigger
and better than ever before. As I and the other staff work hard to
bring some of the pioneers of our community together, we are relying
on your contributions to help make the financial aspect of this event
possible, without hanging ugly corporate banners everywhere.

We just need 100 new members, and the conference is paid for entirely.
Funding is necessary for us to provide a comfortable venue, devote
enough staff time to promote it and have it run smoothly, and offer
other features like audio and video recordings of the talks for future use.

* Chip in by becoming an associate member --
<https://my.fsf.org/associate/support_freedom?referrer=9429>

* Already a member? Thank you! If you can, give a gift membership or
three --
<http://www.fsf.org/blogs/membership/this-holiday-season-donate-support-to-free-software>,
or make a one-time donation -- <http://donate.fsf.org>. A gift
membership is especially great if you have a friend who's on the fence
about coming to the conference.

* Finally, please join the mailing list for updates and be the first to
get your ticket for LibrePlanet 2012 --

please let me know.

If you are already on the system - and we haven't hooked up yet, my ID is: https://joindiaspora.com/u/frogfall
