An Introduction to Young Rewired State

Hi Everyone,

We're running an event on Thursday 8th July to introduce this years the
next generation of coders and designers to Manchester's Young Rewired
State event.

Young Rewired State is a decentralised, UK-wide, hack-week open to
anyone aged 15 to 18 with an interest in data, coding or design.
This year, it's the first week of August.

It's a great way for young people to learn what skills are needed for
industry, make friends with people at the cutting edge of technology and
perhaps, develop the next 'killer' app!

We're having an evening with Chris Taggart from OpenlyLocal to support
the event and help shed some light on what open data actually is, what
you can do with it and why that is cool.

You can find out more details and let us know you're coming here.

If you think you'd be interested helping mentoring at YRS or would like
to see if you can support us in some other way, drop me an email:
yrs@...
and/or come along to the event and we'll have a chat.

Cheers,

Tim

Excellent!

I have been thinking that we should make inroads with the Anarchist Federation, some people in there already dig the free software philosophy and I think that attendance at a couple of their meetings could potentially yield new members and conceivably future joint events. The main question now is whether MFS is comfortable with the anarchist association?

Re: RE: Announcing the "Federation of Free Software UK

I'm not a regular participant at MFS, nor do I even participate frequently on the mailing list, however, due to the company I work for and the clients we have, I would need to completely detach myself from this group if strong ties were created with groups such as the Anarchists Association - if only because of their name.

All the best,

As I understand it in the AF sense, Anarchism is simply the absence of
hierarchy (an-arch-ism), but the FSB is pretty hierarchical with
members under branches under committees under regions under committees
under the main FSB, so I'd say not. http://www.fsb.org.uk/local-fsb

Personally, I think the problem with AF for FFSUK will be the
revolutionary communist association, not the anarchist one.
http://www.af-north.org/?q=aims+and+principles

So while there will probably be sympathies between the groups, some in
each will be opposed to formal links, so I wouldn't try. Work together
if/when it suits and try to avoid either taking over the other.

I'll comment on the FFSUK on fsfe-uk when I get a mo.

Best wishes,

Liverpool LUG Meeting - 7th July 2010

Liverpool Linux User Group Meeting - July 2010
Date Wed July 7th, 2010 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: Liverpool Social Centre, 96 Bold Street, Liverpool, England L1 4HY

Liverpool Linux User Group are a group of Linux and open source software
users that meet on the first Wednesday of the month. If no talk is organised
then we will usually organise a “open stage” for people to discuss projects,
current news, or just to rant.

Main Talk
Graeme Dyas will be giving a introduction to RRDTool and its many uses.

Open Stage
As per usual, time will be allocated to the end of the talk for anyone to
give a five minute talk on any subject. If you want some time just drop me a
mail or grab me on the day.

Doors are usually open before 7:00pm if people want to meet up in the
centre, The Liverpool Social Centre is two doors up from Forbidden Planet
and is the right-hand door at the front of “News From Nowhere”. Press the
white doorbell for access (the one marked basement) and someone will come
up and open the door for you.

After any talks are finished will usually stay in the meeting area until
8:00pm then head out to a local pub, The pub varies from month to month and
usually depends on the size of the crowd. If you arrive late and unsure of
where we are then give one of the contacts a ring.

...that and the fact that 99% of people rightly or wrongly associate
the word "anarchism" with violent clashes between the BNF and Unite
Against Fascism and windows getting smashed.

Philosophy is all well and good, but when you're trying to pitch to
your boss why having Debian on the web box is beneficial to his
business and profits, having the word "anarchism" mentioned anywhere
in the business case is not going to do you any favours.

Me: "Free software is great because it has the latest features and
security patches developed by a huge community rather than having to
wait for a single-point-of-failure development house"
Boss: "I like it, have a pay rise"

Me: "Free software is great because together, comrades, we will use it
to smash the oppressive forces of tyranny and overthrow the government
with our iron fist of protest"
Boss: "Ummm, right, I've been meaning to have a chat with you about
some redundancies we've got to make in the company"
