Fri 7 Nov: Currybeer social

As usual for the first Friday of the month, a group of us from ManLUG
(and various other geek groups) will be going out for a curry and some
drinks on Friday 7th November. We'll be meeting in our usual venue of
Hardy's Well pub[1], Rusholme, from 7:30pm and then heading off for a
meal after a couple of drinks. If you haven't been before, one of us
will usually be wearing a geek t-shirt of some description, so we should
be fairly easy to spot, and we'll be looking out for people anyway.

See you there!

Paul

Linux 2008 this weekend

Just a quick reminder that the Linux 2008 conference is in Manchester
this weekend, with a Python Web Workshop on the Friday followed by two
days of talks on a wide variety of topics, from "Desktop Adapted for
Dad" to "Porting Linux to a new architecture -- the right way". Members
of local user groups can book at reduced rates either beforehand or on
the day itself:

http://www.ukuug.org/events/linux2008/locallug/

There will also be an exhibitors' area, including an O'Reilly stall
where books will be available at a significant discount to the cover
price - this is open to everyone, not just conference delegates.

Just to update everyone, flyers promoting Manchester Free Software
will appear in the bags of all the delegates at Linux '08 this
weekend. Hopefully this will get people thinking about free software
in general as well as advertising our next meeting, which will be
really interesting (announcement coming soon).

Oh and a big thanks should go to Paul who actually arranged everything
with the organisers.

Too many assumptions. It _is_ something that some of our members are
interested in, after all some were involved with the DRM protests
outside the BBC building. It isn’t necessarily something all of our
members are interested in.

Please don’t make the mistake of deciding what people are interested in
without inolving people.

Could we have an update/discussion on the Marbella LTSP or is the
'Marbella Cafe Tech Meeting' a regular thing?

Logo discussion?

Good points. I've added both of them to the normal agenda. It might
well be worth moving the Marbella Cafe stuff until after the meeting
though, but we can decide that tomorrow depending on when Janey is
available.

2009 Meetings - Alternating Talks and Socials?

One thing discussed at the last Manchester Free Software meeting was our
schedule of talks for 2009. We've done a pretty good job of organising
speakers on various aspects of free software and free culture since starting
off a year ago, but it's not been easy, particularly with so few people
attending meetings and volunteering to help. A lot of them have been
organised at short notice, with very little in the way of publicity.

How do people feel about the idea of spending 2009 alternating talks and
general social events? Personally, I feel that organising a speaker every two
months would give us more time to organise them, further in advance, and to
publicise them wider so we can make an effort to reach out beyond the geek
communities rather than preaching to the converted.

The "off month" could be a general get together, perhaps with some lightning
talks, or possibly even more project-oriented work.
