"Enterprise software" - request for info

Hi Free Folk,

(I'm not talking about Star Trek :)

I have a friend about to walk further into the microsoft bog by going
with Sharepoint accross his company.

Does anyone have info about or pointers to good free alternatives for
this kind of enterprise level, document/content management solution? Or
know of any good discussions of the subject available online?

Any thoughts much appreciated,

While I've not much experience with it personally, we use Plone at
work, which might be worth looking into as it's quite enterprise-y. I
can't say how similar it is to Sharepoint though because I've not
really used Sharepoint. The main problem I think with using an
alternative will be the lack of integration with MS Office -
Sharepoint gives the option to 'open this in Word' which users seem to
like (you might even be able to publish from Office too but I'm not
sure), however if Sharepoint has yet to be used then the users won't
be able to miss those 'features'.

ManLUG Christmas social this Friday

As usual for the first Friday of the month, a group of us from ManLUG
will be going out for a curry and some drinks on Friday 7th December, as
a 'ManLUG Christmas Social'. We'll be meeting in Hardy's Well pub[1],
Rusholme, from 7:30pm and then heading off for a meal after a couple of
drinks. If you haven't been before, one of us will usually be wearing a
Linux t-shirt of some description, so we should be fairly easy to spot,
and we'll be looking out for people anyway. If you'd like a mobile
contact number, drop me a line off-list.

See you there!

Paul

P.S. There's also a web site where the details of socials are
announced:

This needs to be looked into and evaluated since I have noticed this arise
before. I will circulate (apologies for cross posting). As noted it is
tricky for us FS users to evaluate such products. hmm.

Plone is good suggestion and something that we do provide.

suggestions?

Re: "Enterprise software" - request for info

Thanks Lucy and Matthew for your suggestions - will investigate plone.
As you say Lucy, the integration with MS Office is important for people
in that world... hmmm, ponderations continue...

Dunno if it will fit your requirements, but apparently OpenOffice will
save to MediaWiki format and MediaWiki is certainly a scalable
solution..

Hello Simon,

Interesting presentation - thanks :)
I try to keep up with Drupal (and have joined the users and
developers group here in the North West), but the scarily bad
PHP in some 3rd party modules makes Plone less of a risk for us.

A quick look at Sharepoint's spread in the NHS pulled out an interesting
comment after the article at:

"We evaluated Sharepoint and it's a better system for intranets than

marketing drive by the likes of CareLink, combined with Microsoft's
near-ubiquity in NHS productivity software. This makes it an easy (but
not necessarily good) choice for managers looking to deploy

Hello Fraser,

Plone and Drupal have been recommended elsewhere in this
thread, but your friend should also be asking about accessibility.

Is the company exempt from providing an accessible site to
its employees? If not, and if they are going to be using Sharepoint,
are they ready for the hoops to jump through to achieve AA-Conformance?
E.g. not using WebParts.

Obviously being locked into a monopolist's platform, and
forced to use particular (recent and expensive) versions of
their software is also a consideration - but many firm's
grasp of IT strategy is strangely weak on this point :-/

Cheers,

 - Richard

What is that integration, exactly? Is it just a case of editing
documents in a word processor and saving them back?

I have to say I don't understand what Sharepoint does, exactly, other
than cause trouble in my limited experience. (It's thought to have
been the root for the systems next to Lucy's office becoming a warez
distribution centre recently, for instance.) Also I recall that it
wasn't accessible to non-Windows (Internet Exploiter?) clients through
the web interface when I was expected to retrieve documents from it.

When it was causing grief at my previous establishment, in a way I
can't recall, I bookmarked things which looked suitable for what
people actually seemed to want to do. (With the proviso that they
wouldn't do the right thing and use SGML/XML markup with appropriate
tools.) Here's the relevant bookmarks extract for what it's worth; it
may have irrelevant entries (especially assuming commercial support is
relevant) and some may not actually be free software. I don't know
why Drupal isn't in there. I guess some other things I have
bookmarked under `general groupware' might also be relevant as they
typically seem to provide document management.
