[bitch] [Sexpos] Bitchlab is dead

Hello,

Our host is kicking us off, telling us that we burn up to many bits and bytes.

RIP, to Bitch|Lab. We are trying to move it elsewhere, but we can't afford
dedicated hosting fees.

That means the lists will all have to go away.

Very sorry about this.

we have a temporary home here: http://bitchlab.wordpress.com/

I wrote a proposal for a large project today. It was littered with this
type of writing. I even used the word l everage. By the third time I typed
it, I barely cringed. They eat it up. I would like to know why the pomos
get such a hard time when you can type all kinds of twaddle and a
businessman will cream his shorts over it. If I get better at the twaddle,
I'm going to start sending them spare pairs of shorts or a link to the
Freeballers Association of America. Oh. Huh. If I encourage thelatter, I
guess I'll have to send them a new pair of slacks.

[bitch] Confined Space, update

JB selected the design and it's (mostly) implemented. You can check it out
here:

http://blog.jordanbarab.com

I'm especially interested in knowing if it's working on Macs, *nix boxen,
and whatever weird browser/OS combos are out there. You can write offlist
to bitch@...

I still haven't had time to write back to everyone from the time before,
but things should be clearing up this week. Thanks for your help, though.
I'll catch up this week. (note to ravi: the weird linkage initially had a
link to bigboobs.com! *grin*)

[bitch] Test please? (doh!)

R rells me I forgot the url. doh! http://blog.jordanbarab.com. Thanks!

Hey all --

On this Sunday (in the states at least), if you are at all inclined to blow
some time, would you mind testing out the site structure with this blog?

I mostly care about the structural elements -- if it's breaking in
operating systems/browser combos like Mac, *nix boxen, win 90, winXP, etc.
and Mac browsers like Safari, etc. I think it's completely broken in Opera,
it was last I checked.

[bitch] admin: list may be down

We're moving to a new host, so the list may be down over the next few days.
I'm not sure when we're making the move -- depends on the answer I get from
the tech. I'm having problems setting up the subdomain for the blog.

[bitch] Call for Submissions -- Please post freely!

VISIBLE: A FEMMETHOLOGY
an anthology of writing on queer femme identity

Editor: Maria Angeline
Publisher: Merge Press
Submissions Deadline: March 15, 2007

Anticipated Publication Date: Spring 2008

Femmes are still invisible. Society can't see past our heels to hear our
stories, so we must continue to build platforms for our voices. Visible: A
Femmethology, a forthcoming anthology about the power and complications in
presenting femme as a gender and breaking the traditional meaning of
feminine, aims to showcase blunt, personal essays exploring what "femme"
means to those who claim it as an identity.

Give me your experiences, your inner dialogues, your theories and
practices. Please do not send fiction, poetry, erotica, or any material to
which you do not fully own the rights. I am seeking prose that is
thoughtful, analytical, raw, challenging, exploratory, and uniquely you.

Submissions must be sent as Word files with text in 12 point Times New
Roman font. Essays must be previously unpublished, 1500-6000 words in
length, and typed double-spaced. You may submit more than one essay.

Author maintains and controls the copyright of their essay and licenses
their First North American Rights to Merge Press for publication purposes.
Author retains the right to reprint the material in any publication.

Send SUBMISSIONS ONLY to Maria Angeline at femmethology at mergepress dot
com. Include your legal name, pseudonym (if any) you wish to use, address,
phone number, email, and the bio you would like to appear in the book if
your selection is chosen for publication. Put the title of your essay in
the subject line of the email. Each essay must be emailed separately.

Send questions to Maria Angeline at maria.angeline at mergepress dot com.

Visible: A Femmethology, an anthology of writing on queer femme identity,
is expected to be released in 2008. Do not email to inquire about the
status of your submission after you receive a confirmation that it has been
received. It is not possible to respond to all email inquires. Once
selections have been made, every person who has submitted work will be sent
an announcement. Please do not submit material if you do not regularly
check your email.

Send a MySpace friend request to Visible: A Femmethology at
http://www.myspace.com/femmethology

Visit http://www.femmethology.com for project updates.

Please post freely!

[bitch] reference for devaluation of professions when women enter them ...

I would post this to WMST-l but I am not an "academic" and don't have
a PhD so I would get bitched out by those snooty women for posting
there. I have heard many times, esp. when I was in divinity school
at U of Chicago, that one sign of decline of social and economic
status and power of previously male-dominated professions, such as
the priesthood and clergy, is allowing women to enter them. Female
dominated professions like nursing and teaching of course have less
status and earning power than male dominated ones, like medicine and
school administration and university teaching. (Medicine is becoming
like this, however, as more and more women enter it and managed care
have taken over medical practice.)

Does anyone have a source or reference for this? Someone must have
written about this. I am writing a paper about midwifery which talks
a bit about the rise of obstetrics nearly 100 years ago and one
argument given by Dr DeLee (the evil guy who medicalized and
pathologized birth) and others is that if uneducated immigrant WOMEN
can deliver babies, then OBs will never get respect as a medical
specialty. A vicious public smear campaign was waged against
midwives based on class, race, and gender by physicians, public
health officials, and newly professionalized nursing, which had its
effect to this day.

Thanks,
Grace

[bitch] Still Taking Submissions for Sex-Pos/Sex Rad Carnival on 10-20

If any one of y'all still are interested in submitting articles for the first Carnival of Sex Radicals and Sex-Positive Feminists (and those who love/want to fuck them..lol), the deadline for submissions remains October 18th; and the date of entry remains October 20th.

I'm sure that the prevailing controversies here on this list of late will be more than enough fuel for discussion...but in case they may not; here are some preliminary subjects for the carnival:

– What exactly constitutes “sex-positive” for you??

–How did “sex-positive” theory evolve out of the “sex wars”??

–What relationship does queer theory have to sex-pos radicalism??

–Why is the Left so schzophenic towards sex-positive radicalism??

–What is the relationship between feminism and sex-positive radicalism, and can there ever be a synthesis, or even a reconciliation??

–How do the varying and diverse communities of sexual practice covalesce into a sex-radical theory and practice??

– (The money question for moi) How in the hell can we successfully incorporate a progressive sexual morality and sex-positive theory and practice into a vibrant and successful progressive political movement??

– Define the different variants of sex radicalism (socialist, feminist, liberal, libertarian, etc.)

– How does race play into sex-pos activism and practice??

– What relationship does explicit sexual media and expression (i.e., pornography and erotica) have in a sex-positive practice…and can mainstream (”male-centered”) porn ever be incorporated into a progressive theory and praxis??

–  What role should progressive men play within the broader role of “sex positive feminism”?? And what about women of color??

-- Finally, how should a sex-positive theory and practice encounter and coexist with more conservative sexual moralities and practices (such as asexuality or consensual abstinence or monogamy...or the acceptance of more conservative sexual politics??

Please feel free to add your own selection of topics to this list.

Send any potential submissions to me either through my email address anthonyk_6319 at charter dot net; or by entering a response to my SmackDog Chronicles blog entry here.

If submission is inevitiable, then why not lie back and.....well, submit??

Anthony
