Feds: Chinese Hack Attacks Likely

By Brian Krebs
washingtonpost.com Staff Writer
Monday, March 31, 2003; 3:27 PM

Chinese hacker groups are planning attacks on U.S.- and U.K.-based Web
sites to protest the war in Iraq, the Department of Homeland Security
warned in an alert that it unintentionally posted on a government Web
site today.

The hackers are planning "distributed denial-of-service" attacks,
which render Web sites and networks unusable by flooding them with
massive amounts of traffic. They also are planning to deface selected
Web sites, according to the alert, though the government said it did
not know when the attacks would occur.

The Homeland Security Department said it got the information by
monitoring an online meeting that the hackers held last weekend to

FC: Colorado state senate delays vote on "mini-DMCA" bill

Subject: state DMCA - delayed in Colorado

Thanks to the publicity on the politech list over the weekend, a couple of
state senators heard from their constituents yesterday, and the Colorado
version of the legislation (HB1303) was laid over for a week. It had been
scheduled for final passage in the State Senate today.

Of course now the folks who raised the issue in the first place have to
finish the job. It isn't dead, merely delayed.

Declan,

I just received this email from the Vice Provost at Penn State. It seems
they are stepping up the anti-P2P campaign with threats of fines and
imprisonment. This has a hostile and foreboding tone...perhaps a
foreshadowing of what's to come.

FC: SARS: Some background information on the disease

I've been almost entirely offline this week because of CFP and probably
won't catch up on email until Monday. But here's some information on SARS,
which we'll cover from time to time on Politech. Basically SARS appears to
be as infectious as the common cold -- it spreads by airborne droplets or
those left on surfaces -- except it can kill you.

Here's the tech perspective:
"Disease infects business world"
http://news.com.com/2009-1022-995238.html?tag=fd_lede1_hed

Note the number of cases yesterday (2,223):
http://www.who.int/entity/csr/sarscountry/2003_04_02/en

Compared to a week earlier (1,323):
http://www.who.int/entity/csr/sarscountry/2003_03_26/en

And six days before that (306):
http://www.who.int/csr/sarscountry/2003_03_20/en/

That's an exponential spread.

[Dave, Declan: this appears to be the first lawsuit against students
directly. And the RIAA seems to have royally pissed off the
universities as well. The damages seem to be large:"The lawsuits ask
for $150,000 for each of the dozens of recordings, listed by title in
the complaint, that the students allegedly used illegally."]
