Mark: " Even now, Eli's scornfully dismissive of those who merely paid "lip
service" to opposing NATO. Presumably, Eli and his comrades were not just
paying "lip service" to opposing NATO, though I don't recall them firing
ground-to-air missiles . . .

"Maybe they were throwing spit wads."

No, they were organizing public meetings and public demonstrations, and
doing their best to rally the American public against the war, rather than
weakening that opposition by joining in the U.S. government's two-minute
hate against Gaddafi.

There will be a demonstration in Houston on Oct. 6, ending up in the front of the Chase Manhattan Bank Tower. I
have written occupytexas to find out the exact time. There are events planned for all the major cities in
Texas.

I will be the lady in a wheelchair at the Houston demo, please stop by if you are there!

Bloomberg on Occupy Wall Street

It's worth reading this nonsense from Mayor Bloomberg.
I just returned from what I would estimate was a 2,000-strong rally at
NYPD headquarters against police brutality of Occupy Wall Street
protesters and the general repression of the right to assembly in NYC
in recent years. It was quite spirited and inspiring. A number of
union leaders spoke about upcoming demonstrations they are organizing.
This movement, for all its flaws, definitely has some legs. Others who
were at the demo may want to chime in.

Mayor Bloomberg: "We'll See" If The City Will Let Occupy Wall Street Continue
By Harry Siegel Fri., Sep. 30 2011 at 8:59 AM Comments (27)

New Yorkers need "to help the banks" was Mayor Michael Bloomberg's
message to the Occupy Wall Street crowd in his weekly radio appearance
on the John Gambling show.
"The protesters are protesting against people who make $40-50,000 a
year and are struggling to make ends meet. That's the bottom line,"
Bloomberg said, presumably meaning service workers on Wall Street,
adding that "we all" share blame for taking on too much risk, not just
the financial industry.

"And people in this day and age need support for their employers. If
the banks don't go out and make loans we will not come out of our
economic problems, we will not have jobs so anything we can do that's
responsible to help the banks do that is what we need."

I was there with my camcorder. Interviewed Binh and Doug Henwood. Want
to interview some of the people in Liberty Park as soon as it stops
raining, then I will post on Vimeo. Dan is right. It was inspiring. I
will be writing about this at some point but my tentative conclusion at
this point is that the young people in the vanguard of this movement
have transcended the dead-end Starbucks window-breaking tactics of the
previous generation. Plus, they really understand defensive
formulations. Those two gains more than makes up for a lack of focused
demands.

Occupy Wall Street

Introductory comments preceding the "Occupy New York" call by the Occupy
Wall Street movement

The item that follows these comments was adopted at a meeting of what I
believe is called the NewYork City General Assembly of the Occupy Wall
Street movement.

I went to the demonstration called to protest the police brutality against
the Occupy Wall Street demonstraters. Partly because it was the first
demonstration I have attended in about a year (for reasons I won't go into)
but also for more important reasons, it was a revealing experience. I made a
good choice for my move to start joining protests again.

I got to the demonstration site (I have never, to my knowledge, been at 1
Police Plaza, the headquarters of the official NYC anti-people force) close
to the scheduled time for it to start-it was not easy for me to find it,
despite the instructions on the leaflet which were pretty vague once you got
off the subway.

Among list members, Louis Proyect was there as he said he would be. So was
Andy Pollack. And an leading activist in the ISO whose name I forget due to
my growing name aphasia, but with whom I have been friendly for a while. I
am sure there were more list members there, but those were the ones I
recognized..

The demonstration was held in front of police headquarters at 1 Police

Thanks, Manuel. And to all you are passing on the information.

I've not been more hopeful in years.

The biggest gripe I've had about movement activities over the past decade is
going to meetings and seeing the same damned gray and white hairs around me
that I've been seeing. This response is striking a chord with the young . .
. and not the few usual suspects, either.

I totally concur with the positive things already said about today's
demo at 1 Police Plaza. The phenomenon Fred describes re speakers is
just a spontaneous extension of what goes on in General Assemblies at
Liberty Park: there are layers of human mikes who repeat the speakers'
words for those behind them. At the Park it takes one or two layers,
at the demo today it took many more, and it happened efficiently and
immediately.
The woman Fred describes speaking, Penny Lewis, is a leader of the
Professional Staff Congress, some of whose officials initiated the
action, and who got endorsements from UAW white collar locals and
other labor lefties.
Fred and Louis are also right about our need to be patient and
sensible. I think the example of the kid hanging onto Penny as she
spoke is a perfect example of a possible segue into a comradely
discussion about demands, i.e. when the teachers' aides et al. from DC
372 rally next week, we say to the OWSers, "these workers are trying
to save jobs that service OUR kids, and we know we need many, many
more of such workers! How do we put that into demand form?
"And after all, we know these banks have the money to pay for MILLIONS
more childcare workers and teachers and so on... and some day when we
occupy not the streets in front of them, but the banks themselves,
we'll know exactly how much they've got and we'll decide what to do
with it..."
(that last paragraph would probably have to be saved for the end of a
much longer dialogue... :)

The thing was nowhere near 1 Police Plaza, which is a fine ugly
looming overbearing example of Brutalist architecture in-terrorem.
In terrorem in every sense of the world, since the cops are
terrified to let anybody near it. It's a fortress on the other side
of a narrow and easily-defended bridge over Park Row, which serves
as the moat. Park Row used to be a street, but the porkers closed it
down after Nineleven(tm) and now use it as a parking lot.

Here's the google map; we were penned in the backyard of the municipal
office building, approximately where the arrow
is, and the bridge is at marker A:
