UK protests and the Royal Wedding

A colleague here brought up the security/protest issues that might attach themselves to the forthcoming
Royal Wedding in the UK.

Murdoch's Sun tabloid ran a page one item on this matter today, complete with warnings that the security
apparatus won't be as docile as a couple of months ago, when Charles and Camilla had a close encounter with
those protesting the hike in university fees:

HATE-FILLED anarchists are plotting to wreck William and Kate's royal wedding by posing as well-wishers
and hiding among the crowd, The Sun can reveal.
Extremists plan to wreak havoc around Westminster Abbey for a MONTH before the big day and aim to ambush
royal cars with roadblocks, diversions and smoke bombs on April 29.

Whereas Gandhi rejected political positions in the new government, Mandela
accepted the presidency, albeit for one term. In Gandhi's case, could the
direction taken by the party after independence have been Gandhi's problem?

Steve

True, Gandhiji wanted to dissolve the Congress organization after achieving
independence from Britain..

Let's hope the people won. They would make much better use of the tank, I
have no doubt. the Ministry of the Interior would have fallen yesterday with
just a few well-placed shells, if the soldiers had not stood by and watch
the demonstrators be murdered.

comradely

Must-see comedy: Sam Webb on Obama's State of the Union

State of the Union and Openings for Progress
by Sam Webb

President Obama soberly looked at the state of the nation earlier this week,
outlined new challenges facing the country, and forcefully presented several
new initiatives to restructure and renew the economy.

Combined with his success in the "lame-duck" congressional session, the
acclaimed speech in Tucson and the successful summit with Hu Jintao, the
president has enhanced his standing considerably since the November defeat
of his party. He is the front-runner for the presidency in 2012, which is
driving right-wing extremists and sections of capital into a frenzy.

etc.
