Warren Buffett speaks to shareholders

“This debilitating spiral has spurred our government to take massive
action. In poker terms, the Treasury and the Fed have gone ‘all in.’
Economic medicine that was previously meted out by the cupful has
recently been dispensed by the barrel. These once-unthinkable dosages
will almost certainly bring on unwelcome aftereffects. Their precise
nature is anyone’s guess, though one likely consequence is an onslaught
of inflation.

“Moreover, major industries have become dependent on Federal assistance,
and they will be followed by cities and states bearing mind-boggling
requests. Weaning these entities from the public teat will be a
political challenge. They won’t leave willingly. Whatever the downsides
may be, strong and immediate action by government was essential last
year if the financial system was to avoid a total breakdown. Had that
occurred, the consequences for every area of our economy would have been
cataclysmic. Like it or not, the inhabitants of Wall Street, Main Street
and the various Side Streets of America were all in the same boat.”

Thousands of Latinos rallying for immigration reform

Thousands of Latinos all over the country are rallying for legalization of
immigrants under the auspices of national and local Latino evangelical
churches, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and local Latino civil rights
groups.

The "National Family Unity Campaign" is being spearheaded on behalf of the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus by Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez, who
represents a Chicago area district in the House and is the only Latino in
the lower chamber from the Midwest.

The campaign kicked off Friday night in Providence, Rhode Island, with an
event at a local church estimated by the local media at nearly 1,000 people,
and continued this afternoon at the monster "Tabernaculo de Atlanta" Church
in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross.

It is a huge space in an industrial and business area into which you could
have fit two or three basketball gyms. When my son and I got there a half an
hour before the event the Church parking lot was already full and we had to
park on a residential street three or four blocks away.

The Tabernacle was packed so full that people were spilling out the doors
and had also completely filled to standing room only another hall of a few
hundred people that was hooked into the event by a giant screen projection
television. My guess is that there were 3,000-4,000 people there, based on a
Church official who told me they had seating for more than 2,000 including
the overflow room.

The event was a combination of religious revival, congressional hearing and
protest rally.

Re: Massacre of Chilean students in Florida panhandle

A comrade writes, "Yeah, I lived up there in N.Fla, just south of Valdosta,
GA for awhile in the early 80s. Definitely the deep south."

No doubt, but other places with recent hate crimes against Latinos include
Brooklyn and Long Island. I don't think this is a "southern" problem -- or
at any rate, not JUST a southern problem.

I think the comrade who pointed the finger at Lou Dobbs and his ilk --in
other words, the national political/social climate-- is closer to the mark.
They've even got Black folks doing it, as in the case of the two Ecuadorean
brothers last December in New York City.

I just posted the thing on the immigrant rights event here in Atlanta today,
but you should look up on Google News the stories about the similar
Providence, RI, event, and look at the comments. Complete and total racist
bullshit. Which needs to be taken on, especially by the highest government
officials. But Obama and his people haven't said word one.

Re: Betancourt's halo [SIC] under spotlight

Wow, that was full of unfounded and irrational accusations.

1. "and Adam accepts this as God's own ultimate expose of Betancourt!"

Betancourt exposed herself by politically embracing Uribe and Sarkozy.

2. "You ought to be deeply ashamed of yourself, Adam, but I assumethe factional commitments that lead you to
view Betancourt as possessing a "halo" -- actually, noone claims that Betancourt is an angel rather than
ahuman being -- that you are duty bound to remove By Any Means Necessary immunize you against second thoughts.

What *are* you talking about?  I don't have "factional" commitments vis a vis the Betancourt or the FARC.
The bourgeois media handled Betancourt her halo.  Now, apparently for personal reasons, two hired
hands of the US have an axe to grind with her.  That's all.  What's your axe to grind with me or what appears
to be some sort of defense of Betancourt.

3. " Get a better grip on the class line, Adam. It is not just drawn between Colombians who have more money and
US plain working-stiffs, who happen to be using their "labor power" to invade a country, their "wages"
being paid by the Pentagon to force a government on Colombia that denies their basic rights. "

Huh?

Immigration Factory Raids

Something pretty peculiar happened this week. There was another one of the
immigration Gestapo factory raids in Washington State. And Janet Napolitano
cried bloody murder.

That's kinda peculiar because Napolitano is Obama's fuehrer of Fatherland
Security, in other words, these were HER raiders, and she didn't know
nothing about it.

The ADDITIONAL peculiarity of it is that I follow immigration and the new
Obama administration pretty closely, not just from my political interests
and focus but also in my day job. And the place where I work is intensely
focused on immigration because of its importance to our client base.

And there had been ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from the Obamaites about stopping the
factory raids, not even a mumbling murmur.

Yet it is quite clear from Napolitano's reaction that secretly, INSIDE the
department of fatherland security the word was supposed to have been passed
down to just stop doing these raids. No publicity, no announcement, no
policy statement, no directive just the months would go by and there would
not happen to be any.

Here's how the NY Times reported it:

Re: Thousands of Latinos rallying for immigration reform

Thanks, Joaquin. This is very encouraging.
I wouldn't be so surprised about Providence. Rhode Island, like much
of the Northeast, has seen more than enough raids to make people
angry.
Do the forces you mentioned have plans for other cities yet?
Even if they don't, a version of your report that could be posted to
immigrant rights and other email lists would be useful to inspire
folks to hold rallies of their own like this.

Re: Betancourt's halo [SIC] under spotlight

Adam writes, "Betancourt exposed herself by politically embracing Uribe and
Sarkozy."

While I understand --perhaps-- why Adam says this (it was the impression one
might get from the English-language imperialist media) I don't think this is
really right. Betancourt was appropriately and understandably grateful to be
freed from captivity. But she sharply, openly and explicitly challenged
Uribe's "no negotiations with terrorists" line, advocating a policy of
national reconciliation in reality (as far as it goes) not too different
from what Fidel says about this situation. That's WHY the US "military
contractor" CIA agents are attacking her in their book BOTH as a
domineering, castrating witch AND a FARC stooge.

There is a REASON why the folks who were and are agents of the US in the
Colombian situation attack her and are trying to discredit her, and it is
NOT because she's running guns to Uribe, who is an American stooge.

As for Sarkozy, I'm not aware of Betancourt trying to play an active role in
domestic French politics. She is a Colombian political actor, not a French
one.

This is one of those situations where my day job has pretty much forced a
lot of information on me, including listening to Ingrid for hours, pretty
much anything and everything she said in Spanish following her liberation,
which I certainly would not have done otherwise. Unless one thinks that
kidnappings and the FARC are Colombia's road to revolution, there's simply
no way to put Uribe and Ingrid in the same camp.
