Cynthia McKinney's comment on Biden's acceptance speech

Hi! I was just asked to comment on Joe Biden's speech. Here is my
statement:

"It's clear that Joe Biden will be the Democrats' Dick Cheney. that means
Democrats, just like the Republicans, represent more war and brutal
occupation. They are playing with the notion that 60 enemies on Dick
Cheney's list aren't enough and that nuclear Russia and nuclear China should
be added to the enemies list.

"Joe Biden is handmaiden to the special interests in Washington, D.C. that
rely on war, death, untold carnage, and the insecurity of average, ordinary
American citizens to have their way. It is clear that a vote for the
Democratic Party is a vote for more war.

"It is time to derail the war machine or we will become victims of it--just
as our children are victimized by the police state and the prison-industrial
complex."

Eyewitness New Orleans -- As Hurricane Gustav Bears Down
Sunday, August 31, 2008
By: Gloria La Riva

PSL Presidential Candidate Gloria La Riva reports from Louisiana
Tomorrow, the people of New Orleans and the wider area again face the possibility of
catastrophic disaster. While the government's evacuation is demonstrably better than
that of Katrina, the physical damage to homes and the infrastructure could exceed that
of Katrina. Storm surges of 18-feet to 24-feet of water are expected. Officials on TV have
said that they've strengthened the levees only to Hurricane Category 3 strength, while
Gustav is likely to hit as a Category 4. Almost all of New Orleans is below sea level.

	New Orleans housing struggle

The for-profit, "free market" disaster response—which resulted in tragedy three years
ago—has already again rose its ugly head.

All of New Orleans will be on lockdown this afternoon. 50,000 soldiers from the National
Guard have been activated in the region. The police of several parishes, including
Jefferson and Kenner, have warned that anyone in the street will be "challenged."
During Katrina, Jefferson police shot and killed a group of people driving on the
bridge. This morning, the Kenner police chief, Steve Caraway, said, "if you are
arrested, you will not go to a county jail. You will be taken to Angola prison." As
those around him smirked, Mayor Ray Nagin made the same promise at a press
conference this morning.

Yesterday, we visited the Harvey Canal, where construction has quite obviously not

FENSUAGRO's Response to the Arrest of Liliana Obando

I have been given to understand, that Fensuagro has since retracted or at
least softened its initial position. The statements were made by the
person who took over Liliany's work the later part of 2007 and was reflected
in a letter published in El Tiempo by the current President. Indeed Liliany
travelled to Canada on several occasions IN THE COMPANY of the President of
Fensuagro and represented its Human Rights Division in many countries: for
this reason I could not understand why they only have conceded that she is a
"consultant".
Fensuagro is unique in that it combines the peasant, trade union, Blacks,
and originary people's movements and spearheads the move to land reform in
Colombia. This does not mean that at the current time it is a primarily
left leading organization since among its membership there are many who are
simpathetic to the Uribe Government, as occurs with some trade unions.

I have attended a few Conferences organized by Fensuagro and have
extensive research particularly as it attends to the agrarian peasant
movement and originary people.

Republicans in Hollywood

I always wondered about how Republicans organized among the Hollywood
crowd, seemingly 'tarred' with the "L" word by the conservative side of
bourgeois politics.

Here is an interesting little article:

Describes activities of conservative actors like Ron Silver and Gary
Sinise and others.

Possible Russia-Iran Alliance To Counter 'Unfriendly' US Moves

OSC: Russia- Iran Alliance?
The USG Open Source Center translates an article from the Russian press

The recognition of South Ossetia's and Abkhazia's independence by Russia is
a timely step to protect these republics from new Georgian aggression.
However, taking into account the United States' plans to expedite Georgia's and
Ukraine's accession to the NATO military-political bloc, the situation near the
Russian border remains alarming. At the same time Moscow has a lot of
possibilities to take balanced counter measures to the United States' and entire
NATO's unfriendly plans. In particular, Russia can rely on those countries that
effectively oppose the United States' and their satellites' expansion. Only
collective efforts can help to create a situation which would, if not
eliminate then at least reduce the risk of the Cold War's transformation into local
and global conflicts.

For instance, Moscow could strengthen its military-technical ties with Syria
and launch negotiations on the reestablishment of its military presence in
Cuba. However, the most serious step which the United States and especially
Israel fear (incidentally, Israel supplied arms to Georgia) is hypothetical

Reasons to avoid Alexander Cockburn, politically and personally

http://www.counterpunch.com/cockburn08302008.html

Alexander Cockburn wrote:

"Who would not wish to take off Sarah's spectacles and liberate those rich,
heaped-up tresses? It's that librarian look so reminiscent of Laura Bush in
happier days, back among the stacks in the Public Library in Midland which I
made [SIC] visited in 2001, mostly to view the crossroads where 17-year
Laura broadsided her boyfriend in that so-tragic "accident". (The police
report says that Laura ran a stop sign in her Chevy and struck the Corvair
of 17-year old Michael Douglas. He was thrown from the car and broke his
neck. Some accounts have claimed Michael and Laura had been dating. Laura
was with a 17-year old girl friend at the time. It was a clear night, with
unobstructed views, shortly after 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, 1963. )"

In my original comment, I focused on Cockburn's frankly bizarre sexualizing
about Sarah Palin, but failed to take note of the continuation of his
bizarre charge, here by hints but more directly previously. that Laura Bush
intentionally caused the death or at least the injury of her youthful Texas
heartthrob, driven by hormonal violence. I assume from this that the Secret
Service's main task would be to keep an enraged, jealous and homicidal Laura
Bush from depriving us of George. The facts available recommend giving up
such reformist illusions.

Let me point out that there is qualitatively less evidence, to put it mildly
(there is actually none), to support this claim than there is for global
warming. Yet Cockburn has no hesitation to treat the alleged Laura murder as
proven, while declaring global warming a big lie of big business.

Of course, Laura Bush is the subject of another Cockburn crush.

Bolivia: Two years of `post-neoliberal' Indigenous nationalism -- a

By the *Bolpress editorial board*, translated by *Sean Seymour Jones*

State intervention in economic activity -- the nationalisation of
businesses, restrictions on exports and price controls, among other
measures -- doesn't appear to be contributing to the materialisation
of the structural changes postulated by the National Development Plan
(PND) of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS). This is the evaluation of
business leaders, analysts and political leaders from the right-wing
opposition in Bolivia. However, according to the government of President
Evo Morales, the brutal and desperate reaction of the dominant classes
"in relegation" proves that something is changing.

LA TIMES: Russia-Cuba ties worry U.S.

From the Los Angeles Times
Russia-Cuba ties worry U.S.
Amid tensions over Georgia, Moscow has been signaling
that it wants to restore its relationship with Havana that
included military and intelligence cooperation.
By Paul Richter
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON - Amid rising tensions over Georgia, U.S.
officials are increasingly concerned that Russia is moving
to rebuild one of the most dangerous features of the old
Soviet Union's security structure -- its alliance with
Cuba.

Moscow has been signaling that it wants to restore a long
relationship with Havana that included not only economic
ties, but also military and intelligence cooperation. The
relationship brought the world to the brink of nuclear war
during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, when Russia
secretly installed nuclear missiles on the island.

U.S. officials believe that Russian statements are partly
bluster, intended to dissuade the United States and its
allies from moving the NATO alliance and military
equipment, including missile defense sites, closer to the
Russian border. And some experts question how interested

Re: An analysis of the DP convention that works better

Artesian writes:

============================
The epic battles for union rights and civil rights involved both mass
moblization and legislative action by Democratic administrations - the
Wagner Act under Roosevelt and the Civil Rights Act under Johnson. Both
pieces of legislation fell short of what the unions and the black movement
wanted, but each was welcomed as by them as an important advance.

Unions, women, blacks, immigrants, gays, environmentalists, the antiwar and
other reform movements have petitioned, demonstrated and engaged in other
forms of direct action primarily to exert pressure on Congress to realize
their demands through legislation. While there is much debate about the
means of struggle and the laws which issue from it, they're part of the same
process and aren't counterposed to each other.

While Trotskyists and other left tendencies have criticized these movements
for campaigning for the Democrats during elections, they do so because they
see the party as their instrument, however flawed, for advancing and
defending their programs against the Republicans in the executive,
legislative, administrative, and judicial branches of government. The
European and other popular movements have the same relationship to the
social democratic parties elsewhere.
