McKinney and the Reconstruction Party Was: just back from the national assembly conference....,

I assume it contains this document, or some variation of it:

http://www.runcynthiarun.org/ReconstructionManifesto

Note: This Draft Manifesto was produced by a group of
Reconstruction Party activists who met in New Orleans on Saturday,
Jan. 26 in support of the International Days of Action against
Neo-Liberalism. This draft is being submitted for wide discussion
and amendments to all activists interested in joining the effort to
build a Reconstruction Party. Sister Cynthia McKinney participated
in this meeting and contributed to this Draft Manifesto.

> website at . . . ." without giving the URL

It is not clear to me what was disturbing about it (other than editing
problems).

OK, it's clear that the first three pages are from the _Socialist Organizer_.

The last part of the circular is a variation of this draft.

Re: More liberal wisdom on oil

As usual, Joaquín (finally found that accented "í" key!!!) writes a
provocative essay, this time on energy.

He does however make some generalities I'd like to address. Here is a
little essay in response.

= = = =

Iron ore, etc, etc, etc, etc.

I'm not sure where the focus on "iron ore" came from. Most steel is not
made from iron ore. Steel represents the single greatest recycled
material known to humanity, second only to...water. And even here steel
has water beat since *most* steel is recycled eventually, whereas most
water is dumped into the ocean where it combines with NaCL and becomes
useless saltwater.

The Chinese expansion has caused all sorts of interesting commodity
statistics to raise it's peaks and valley's...including steel. The PRC
now is the biggest consumer of scrap steel in the world. Should it
surprise anyone that scrap steel, the most important 'raw' material in
steel making should go up in price? Does anyone care? Would it surprise
anyone that that *over 90%* of the worlds erected cranes...the big
thingees you see on top of most construction sites....are in China right
now? Would it surprise anyone then that the price for this singular
piece of construction equipment which has to be assembled on site, has
doubled and tippled in 10 years? At my plant where I work, our 2005
overhaul was actually delayed 1 full year because so many orders for
structural steel had poured in that our contractor, Babcock & Wilcox
couldn't order the material we need because it was all being shipped to

Re: More liberal wisdom on oil

One more thing, we really need to look at regarding iron ore prices is---
shipping costs. Baltic Dry Index, after tumbling in November is above
previous record highs-- shipping costs are approaching 30-40% of the price
of the commodity for certain bulk shipments. That was part of the reason I
posted the reference to the FT article on P&G whose transportation costs now
exceed factory operating costs.

I am not certain, but I think shipping costs are paid up front by the ore
producers. Would appreciate it if anybody has confirmation (or the
opposite).

But.....dry bulk shipping tonnage under construction and scheduled to
become operational in the next 3 years is also at a record level, and
despite my record at prediction (Carter will beat Reagan, Yankees in 7 over
Arizona) I will hazard a guess that there is going to be a big, big
recession and prices for shipping and basic commodities will tumble. And
Carter will beat Reagan.

Re: McKinney and the Reconstruction Party Was: just back from the national assembly conference....,

"...Socialist Organizer...". I suspect given the timing that the
editorial was based on the Reconstruction Manifesto not the other way
around. [Or...Socialist Organizer is a lot more influential than people
thought.]

At any rate, I'm curious as to what is disturbing about this document?

China's capitalist road

What if China were capitalist, in spite of official pronouncements
to
the contrary? Economic geographers Dick Walker and Daniel Buck
talk
about the massive transformation that has taken place in that
country
and how we can best understand it through the lens of
Marxist political
economy.

Zizek, Critchley, "open borders" and finite/infinite demands

I know I am risking the ire of Mike Friedman and others by raising
this question, but I think this question is an important one and Zizek
has a very interesting point about this that is worth discussing.

Is "open borders now" a demand Marxists should be making?

(Of course, it's an irreproachable demand).

A recent article from the ISO said, "The slogan "No one is
illegal" is not merely a moral imperative, but one based on the idea that so
long as workers allow themselves to be pitted against each other, so long
will they remain weak, exploited victims of capitalism."

But if border controls were removed, so many workers from elsewhere
would immediately move to the USA that US workers' wages would still
plummet down even more from current levels.

"Open borders" is an "infinite demand" (in the terminology of the
debate between Zizek and Critchley -- see
<http://www.readysteadybook.com/Blog.aspx?permalink=20080605062449>).

I think the question remains open: should we as leftists raise
"infinite" demands, or "finite" demands? I have not been able to make
up my mind on this question.

I think Zizek in his new book makes a pretty convincing case in favor
of raising "finite" demands. Zizek has written:

"The lesson here is that the truly subversive thing is not to insist
on 'infinite' demands we know those in power cannot fulfil. Since they
