Ecuador sues Colombia over anti-drug spraying

Ecuador sues Colombia over anti-drug spraying

QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuador said on Monday it had sued Colombia in
international court over drug crop fumigation along its frontier in
reaction to a Colombian raid that killed a rebel leader across the
border earlier this month.

The March 1 bomb attack on a Colombian rebel camp inside Ecuador has
frayed ties between both countries, and briefly raised the threat of
war after Ecuador and Venezuela moved troops to their borders with
Colombia.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa had warned he would take action
against Colombia on Monday and tensions between the Andean neighbors
remained high after Quito accused Bogota of waging a smear campaign
to tie Correa to the leftist rebels.

"Ecuador asks the court to declare Colombia's air fumigation a
violation of Ecuador's sovereignty," Foreign Minister Maria Salvador
told reporters in Quito.

Ecuadorean authorities have put their case before the International
Court of Justice in the Hague, she said.

The minister demanded Colombia halt all fumigation near the border
and pay the government compensation for more than 7 years of spraying

Re: The relentless and obsessive opposition to Obama

Walter writes --

The relentless and obsessive opposition to Obama which we see on
the Internet by some on the ultraleft side of the political world
is indeed quite telling. None of the critics of Obama seem to be
investing any time or energy in opposition to Clinton or McCain.

reply -

So to criticize Obama and his Clintonesque program is ultra left? Obamaism,
not McCain or Hillary Clinton is co-opting the left, that is why we oppose
it, as we have with every Democrat "lesser evil". Was Walter "relentless and
obsessive" when he opposed McGovern in 1972, Kennedy in 1980, Gore in 2000,
Kerry in 2004?? That's what the liberal Democrats would have accused him of.
Once again, it is mind blowing that this ABC of Marxism has to be repeated - on
a Marxist discussion list!

Walter -

The Obamaphobes have set themselves on a virtual jihad against
what they have decided are the illusions of others. It's tiring
to be lectured about our alleged illusions by the self-appointed
guardians of our souls. These people, presumably, consider that
they, of course, are completely free of illusions while we are
suffering under the weight of our illusions. We are sick, we are
ill, according to these voices, while they are healthy and quite
lacking in illusions, they self-congratulatorily pat themselves
on the back.

The racist attacks on Obama are obvious, ranging from the blatant (the
Wright videos) to the direct (Limbaugh recruiting white Republicans
for Frau Clinton) to the barely disguised (Herr Clinton, Ferraro,
Carville). In contradistinction, I have yet to see anything sexist in
the commentary about her. There is nothing "historic" about an
American Thatcher. For an African-American to become president of
this slavery-conceived country would be historic indeed. This
cavalier equating of Clinton and Obama, leading to preferential
condemnation of Obama, is indeed indicative of profound inability to
see the actual political ferment at work.

EGYPT: Can't Wait a Generation to Eat

CAIRO - A World Bank official said this month it could take as long as "a
generation" for the effects of Egypt's recent economic growth to be felt by the
poorest segments of the population. But as "neo-liberal" economists urge
patience, retail prices for essential foodstuffs continue to skyrocket,
stretching many household salaries to breaking point.

Re: The relentless and obsessive opposition to Obama

Wonderful commentary by Mumia on Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr.:
http://www.prisonradio.org/MumiaCrazyUncleKing.htm
==============================================================

So it's not only the positive things which Obama says and does,
it's the vacuous paucity of ideas from the Clinton campaign
which is stoking so much energy against her. Certainly there
is an element of sexist prejudice against women involved, but
she has made herself so obvious a target.

Also wonderful to watch as so many of the ruling class pundits
line up either for Obama or against Clinton. The NY Daily News
endorsed Clinton, but runs stinging columns against her like
that by conservative music and cultural critic Stanley Crouch
published in today's print edition (March 31, 2008):

Here's a sample of the anti-Clinton comments from the WSJ:

Palestine : Opinion/Editorial:

THE SENATOR, HIS PASTOR AND THE ISRAEL LOBBY
By Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada, 31 March 2008

For months, even before most Americans had heard of
Senator Barack Obama's pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright,
prominent pro-Israel activists were hounding Obama over
Wright's views on Israel and ties to Nation of Islam
leader Louis Farrakhan. In January, Abraham Foxman,
National Director of the Anti-Defamation League, demanded
that Obama denounce Farrakhan as an anti-Semite. The
senator duly did so, but that was not enough. EI
co-founder Ali Abunimah comments.
