RE: [L-I] Why doesn't President Hugo Chavez Frias just leave?

Macdonald:

The better question of course is: Why doesn't George
W. Bush just leave? I will not elevate him to the
presidential status of Hugo Chavez.

Chavez Says Opposition Still Plans Violent Destabilization of Venezuela

Chavez Says Opposition Still Plans Violent Destabilization of Venezuela
Monday, Aug 02, 2004

By: Robin Nieto - Venezuelanalysis.com

Caracas, August 2, 2004--Yesterday, during his weekly television program
Aló Presidente, President Hugo Chavez accused the opposition of trying to
stop the progress of the presidential recall referendum with a "Plan B"
that is meant to generate violence in the days before the referendum, as
well on August 15, and to not acknowledge the results of the referendum.

"The opposition is apparently desperate: it is disposed to using violence
and is calling for the results not to be accepted unless Chavez goes," the
president said in the 200th broadcast of his popular television program.

Moderator's not on List crash...

People may have noticed that there was downtime on the list today, as
econ.utah servers had problems at the University (apparently it wasn't
PATRIOT related, but you can never be too sure...).

This provides me with ample opportunity to both tell people that if you
sent out any posts during the downtime, they will have to now be resent.
This includes me, no one has been put on secret moderation.

I also, as is his due, would like to tip my hat to our great tireless
provider of technical help, space and more Hans Ehrbar for his service,
provided to all of us free.

Iraq is a scene from Hell

From M Junaid Alam and the lefthook list
(lefthook.org)

Iraq to Explode

Can't Blair see that this country is about to explode? Can't Bush?

Robert Fisk, The Independent

Bagdhad: The war is a fraud. I'm not talking about the weapons of mass
destruction that didn't exist. Nor the links between Saddam Hussein and
al-Qaida which didn't exist. Nor all the other lies upon which we went
to war. I'm talking about the new lies.

For just as, before the war, our governments warned us of threats that
did not exist, now they hide from us the threats that do exist. Much of
Iraq has fallen outside the control of America's puppet government in
Baghdad but we are not told. Hundreds of attacks are made against US
troops every month. But unless an American dies, we are not told. This
month's death toll of Iraqis in Baghdad alone has now reached 700 - the
worst month since the invasion ended. But we are not told.

The stage management of this catastrophe in Iraq was all too evident at
Saddam Hussein's "trial." Not only did the US military censor the tapes
of the event. Not only did they effectively delete all sound of the 11
other defendants. But the Americans led Saddam Hussein to believe -
until he reached the courtroom - that he was on his way to his
execution. Indeed, when he entered the room he believed that the judge
was there to condemn him to death. This, after all, was the way Saddam

The UPA Government Keeps Exposing itself

The UPA government is yet to complete its first three months in office. Yet
there are already ample indications as to where its priorities and
sensitivities lie.

Assam and Bihar have been facing severe floods, causing unprecedented damage
and devastation. The Prime Minister did make aerial surveys of some
flood-hit areas. But the government did not declare the floods a national
calamity. Some allocations have been made from the Prime Minister's Relief
Fund, but the government has not considered it necessary to increase its
budgetary allocation for flood-control measures. Let us remember that the
allocation on this score is a meagre Rs. 30 crore.

To take another example, consider the case of Manipur where the people, led
by the brave women of the state, are waging a heroic struggle for
restoration of democracy. Manipur is one of those North-Eastern states where
the Indian Army and security forces have been enjoying extraordinary powers
under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958. In the name of maintaining
'public order' this Act authorises the security forces to search, seize,
arrest and even kill suspected insurgents with impunity. The recent protests
have been triggered by the rape and killing of Thanglam Manorama by the
Assam Rifles. The UPA government has not paid any heed so far.

Reports of farmers' suicides have been pouring in from Andhra Pradesh and
Kerala, both Congress-ruled states. It was not before the NHRC issued some

Resistance Without Reservation!
Part 1 of 2

by Harsha Walia and Stefan Christoff; August 05, 2004

As hundreds of thousands gather in New York to protest the Republican
National Convention at the end of August, a smaller and less historic but
perhaps more profound convergence will be taking place in the interior of
British Columbia. More profound in its demands. More profound in
representing over 500 years of struggle.

Sun Peaks resort and Delta Hotels are built on Secwepemc territories that
have never been ceded or surrendered. Land and Water BC disregarded the
Secwepemc, who said NO to expansion in stakeholder meetings and in June
2001 obtained a court injunction to forcibly remove the Secwepemc from
their homelands. The Skwekwelk'welt Protection Center, at the resort's
entrance, claims aboriginal title and rights. For this exercise of rights,
54 arrests with charges ranging from criminal contempt and intimidation by
blocking a road to resisting arrest have been made.

In honour of the front-line struggles of this land that have been in total
resistance for centuries, a convergence is being organized on Secwepemc
territories on August 28-29. Hundreds will travel from Vancouver and
surrounding areas to escalate the fight against state and corporate
occupation.

URGENT CALL TO PROTECT INTERNATIONAL LAW, NATIONS' RIGHT FOR TRUTH AND LIFE
OF PRESIDENT SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC

During the whole lasting of the Hague process against President
Slobodan Milosevic the most responsible persons of the ICTY at The Hague
have been aware, on the basis of numerous doctors' reports and of numerous
communications from our organization, from other organizations and
individuals, of the health situation of President Milosevic and of the fact
that the process itself puts his life at stake. In spite of this awareness,
the tribunal never treated President Milosevic's health situation properly,
nor ever properly considered the legitimate demands for his release for
medical treatment, recovery and preparation for his case. By that and by the

Red Salute to the Legendary Revolutionary Leader and Founder of CPI (ML )

In the course of a protracted struggle between its opportunist and
revolutionary wings, the Communist Party of India underwent its first split
in 1964 and a new party was formed in the shape of the Communist Party of
India (Marxist). It did not however take long for the revolutionary wing to
realize that the leadership of the new party had been seized by the centrist
trend of the movement, which was bent upon pursuing the same opportunist
course. An inner-Party struggle ensued throughout the party. However, in a
concentrated form, it was conducted by Comrade Charu Mazumdar through his
famous Eight Documents, written between 1965 and 1967.

Marked by a nationwide outburst of mass movements, this was also the period
that saw the first major turn in post-1947 Indian politics. In West Bengal,
the CPI(M)-dominated United Front was swept to power and the party
leadership completed its transition to the opportunist strategic course. As
its antithesis, the revolutionary wing went beyond the parameters of
inner-Party struggle and strove to orientate the mass struggles, the peasant
movement in particular, towards the revolutionary strategic course. The
peasant uprising in Naxalbari, organised by the Charu Mazumdar-led wing of
the Party precipitated the first showdown between the two strategic
perspectives and tactical lines within the CPI(M).

True to the tradition of social-democratic betrayal, the party in power
responded with bullets, and the simmering revolt within the party spread
like wildfire. With revolutionary communists throughout India detaching

[L-I] Tapuskovic refuses to join the Hague criminal cousine

**************************************************************
A NOTE FROM SLOBODA/ICDSM:

The Hague tribunal has not yet given-up from its criminal intentions towards
President Milosevic. And our voice of protest and any public voice of
protest is becoming more and more unpleasant to them. They are being caught
in a criminal act.

On Friday, 6 August, two most important Belgrade dailies, "Politika" and
"Novosti" gave lot of space ("Politika" on its front page) to interviews
with Belgrade lawyer Branislav Tapuskovic (one of the Amici Curiae during
the Prosecution case), who sent a letter to the tribunal, declaring his
refusal to accept to be on the among the candidates for an imposed counsel
to President Milosevic, something which was offered to him a day earlier in
a phone call from the tribunal's Registry. In his letter, Mr. Tapuskovic
used the arguments similar to the ones contained in the International
Lawyers' Petition sent several days earlier to the UN and to the tribunal.
Almost all other Belgrade media also reported on his decision.

But, up to now, NONE of the Western media reported a word on that!

We again call upon all lawyers, law professors and professional jurists to
join the Lawyers Petition. The days in front of us are decisive for the
protection of International Law and for the struggle for truth about Serbian
people.

The Lawyers Petition can be read at:
http://www.icdsm.org/Lawappeal.htm

Instead of excellent articles from "Politika" and "Novosti", which we have
