[BillTottenWeblog] A Million Gardens

by Dmitry Orlov

Club Orlov (November 27 2011)

Stan {1} has graciously agreed to let me share this article with you.
The solution he proposes is one that should be put into practice
immediately: unlike other post-collapse solutions that will only become
competitive after collapse has largely run its course, opting out of
industrial agriculture is something that doesn't have to wait.]

I love OWS and the Slogan "99%"

A Million Gardens (for the 99% of the 99%)

by Stan

Feral Scholar (November 23 2011)

It is a great slogan that puts in bold relief the immense power of the
one percent of humanity that exists parasitically on the rest. "We are
the 99%". It is a declaration that in some significant way, people are
more awake to their circumstances than they were. Around this slogan,
we have seen courageous and principled people take to the streets in a
great shout of "No!" at the powers and principalities of late
neoliberalism; and we have seen that this outburst resonates with far
more people than the ruling layer of society expected. We have seen the
protestors demonstrate with their bodies that under their façade of
civility, this ruling layer relies in the last instance on truncheons,
teargas, guns and jails. This unmasking is more important in many ways
than what will come afterward, because without it, we accommodate - and

Re: Defend Academic Freedom at Baylor University -- Petition in support of Dr. Marc Ellis

This is very tricky, because Marc either won't or is prevented from
saying what he's being investigated for.

It's not clear at all that it has anything to do with political
persecution for his beliefs. (Ken Starr is a fascist, but as such I
don't recall him being pro-Zionist. Maybe I'm wrong.)

The Fed Grants $7.77 Trillion in Secret Bank Loan - Now Do You Understand Occupy Wall Street?

Nov 29, 2011The Fed Grants $7.77 Trillion in Secret Bank Loan - Now Do You
Understand Occupy Wall Street?

*Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), a longtime advocate for reform of the
Federal Reserve, is sharply criticizing the Federal Reserve today after
Bloomberg news reported that the Federal Reserve secretly committed nearly
$8 trillion in support to American and international financial institutions
during the 2008 bailout. Kucinich recorded a video for his website before
going to the floor of the House of Representatives to call upon Congress to
reclaim its Constitution primacy over monetary policy.*

Notes from the editors of Monthly Review (reflections on recent world events)

http://monthlyreview.org/2011/12/01/december-2011-volume-63-number-7

  Notes from the Editors
Monthly Review, Dec, 2011

*The last month (late September to late October 2011) was to all
appearances a historical turning point. The Arab Spring gave way to the New
York/World Fall as protesters occupied Wall Street (basing themselves in
Zuccotti Park), and the movement of the 99% spread across the entire globe.
A brief, selective chronology serves to highlight the speed with which
events unfolded. (December 17, 2010) Tunisian protests give rise to Arab
Spring. (May 15, 2011) Tens of thousands of protesters begin occupying
Puerta de Sol square in Madrid. (June 9) Adbusters magazine acquires the
domain name occupywallstreet.org. (July 13) Adbusters calls for a Wall
Street occupation on September 17. (August 23) Anonymous, a hactivist
group, releases a video encouraging its followers to take part in the
occupation. (September 5–11) U.S. Day of Rage, an Internet-based activist
organization, releases tactical guidelines on Occupy Wall Street.
(September 17) Occupy Wall Street begins with an estimated 1,000 people.
(October 1) More than 5,000 protesters march towards Brooklyn Bridge; over
700 arrests made. (October 6) Occupy the Hood emerges as a major part of
the Occupy movement. More than 5,000 protesters march in Portland, Oregon.
Occupy protests spread throughout the country. (October 11) More than 100
are arrested at Occupy Boston. (October 13) Mayor Bloomberg tells Occupy
Wall Street that it will need to move out of Zuccotti Park the next day for
park cleaning. (October 14) Bloomberg retreats in the face of mass support
for the protesters. (October 15) Worldwide Occupy demonstrations take
place; protests spread to 951 cities in 82 countries. Occupy London begins
outside St. Paul’s Cathedral. Occupy Toronto begins in St. James Park.
Occupy Johannesburg launched. Police crackdown on Occupy Chicago leads to

Palestine solidarity has become increasingly visible in the UKtrade
union movement. (Rod
Leon <http://electronicintifada.net/people/rod-leon>)

London -- Over the last few years, UK trade unions have expressed
solidarity with Palestine more and more explicitly. Union after union has
overturned a previous orthodoxy of balance between “two sides” when it
comes to policy on Israel and the Palestinians. So many unions have now
passed motions in support of the Palestinian boycott, divestment and
sanctions <http://electronicintifada.net/tags/bds> (BDS) movement that even
the often conservative Trades Union Congress (TUC) has been compelled to
change policy<http://electronicintifada.net/content/boycott-movement-takes-hold-british-unions/8392#.TszRVGPTo-I>
.

In 2009, TUC policy on Palestine was — for the first time — brought closer
to the policy of member unions. A motion calling for a targeted boycott of
Israeli settlement goods was passed at the September congress. It
instructed the TUC to “develop an effective Boycott, Disinvestment and
Sanctions campaign by working closely with the PSC [Palestine Solidarity

Yisrael Beiteinu, Likud draft new bill to limit foreign funding for
NGOs According
to left-wing activists, European parliamentarians say the new bill will
damage Israel's relations with Europe. By Jonathan
Lis<http://www.haaretz.com/misc/writers/jonathan-lis-1.443>

Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu Wednesday proposed a new bill aimed at limiting
foreign funding to Israeli nongovernmental organizations by replacing two
bills that have been frozen by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The
Ministerial Committee for Legislation is expected to debate the new bill on
Sunday.

According to left-wing activists, European parliamentarians say the new
bill will damage Israel's relations with Europe. Meanwhile, opposition
members and NGO representatives accuse Netanyahu of conducting a witch hunt
against groups that criticize his government and of intending to gag the
media, justice system and civil society.

The new bill would replace two previous proposals sponsored by MK Faina
Kirshenbaum (Yisrael Beiteinu ) and MK Ofir Akunis (Likud ).

The bill calls for a complete prohibition on foreign funding to NGOs that
deny Israel's right to exist, incite racism, support armed resistance
against Israel, support putting Israeli officials on trial in international
courts, call on insubordination in the army and support boycotts against

Why is Charlie Rose hugging Seth Klarman?

**Vimeo**.*

Check out this video from November 1 in New York. Seth Klarman is a big
hedge fund manager and philanthropist. He's never been on the actual
Charlie Rose <http://www.charlierose.com/search/?text=Klarman> show, but
Rose interviews him at an event for Klarman's organization that fights
anti-Semitism, called Facing History.

At the end of the interview, Charlie Rose hugs Klarman. And that hug is the
heart of the problem in our liberal media culture.

Seth Klarman seems to be a good liberal. Martha Minow, dean of Harvard Law
School, is on Facing History's
board<http://www.facinghistory.org/files/Board_Staff.pdf>.
Klarman's wife Beth gives money to Barack Obama, Barbara Boxer, and Barney
Frank. The Klarman Family Foundation (with an annual budget of about $40
million) gives tons to hospitals and arts organizations, the ballet,
Shakespeare, Big Brother, Planned Parenthood, and NARAL. It has also given
money to public
television<http://tv.broadwayworld.com/article/Candice-Bergen-To-Narrate-New-Documentary-On-PBS-20111107_page2#>.
I bet that Charlie Rose's show is getting support from Klarman-- or that

*Both sides are staking out their territory across the Middle East as BRICS

Few may have noticed when, last week, US State Department spokeswoman
Victoria Nuland cryptically announced
<http://en.rian.ru/mlitary_news/20111123/168957689.html>that Washington
"would cease carrying out certain obligations under the Conventional Armed
Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty with regard to Russia".

Translation: Washington will not inform Russia from now on about the
redeployment of its global armada. The Pentagon's worldwide "repositioning"
strategy is now supposed to be a secret.

Some essential background is in order. CFE part one was signed way back in
1990 - when the Warsaw Pact was still in effect, and NATO was supposed to
defend the "free" West against what was depicted as a threatening Red
Army.

Fw: Action: Ask Senate to Reject Detaining U.S. Citizens Without Charge or Trial

Please act on this one.  This really represents a big step in creating a police state in this country, and I
think the possibilities of this legislation are really frightening, if Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo aren't
enough already.

CAIR Action Alert:
Ask Senate to Reject Detaining U.S. Citizens Without Charge or Trial
(WASHINGTON D.C., 12/1/2011) -- TheCouncil on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today urged American
Muslims and other people of conscience to contact their senators to request the removal of problematic
language in theNational Defense Authorization Act (S. 1867), which authorizes the president to
indefinitely hold American citizens suspected of terrorism without charge or trial.
SEE: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (Sections 1031 and 1032)
In a provision sponsored by Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) andJohn McCain (R-AZ), the respective chairman and
ranking member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, Sections 1031 and 1032 of the bill authorize
the president to order the military to indefinitely hold American citizens, inside or outside of the
United States, suspected of being members of al-Qaida, the Taliban or their affiliates.
President Obama, citing serious legal and policy concerns, has threatened to veto the bill if the two
provisions are not removed. In a recent memo to the Senate, the administration asserted that, "applying
this military custody requirement to individuals inside the United States, as some Members of Congress
have suggested is their intention, would raise serious and unsettled legal questions and would be
inconsistent with the fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets."
SEE: White House Memorandum Denouncing Indefinite Detention of American Citizens
FBI Director Mueller and leading senators have spoken out against the unconstitutional provisions of
this bill.

Twenty Examples of the Obama Administration Assault on Domestic Civil
Liberties
*Rhetoric aside, how different has Obama been from Bush in this area?

by Bill Quigley <http://www.commondreams.org/bill-quigley>*
Associate Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights
and law professor at Loyola University New Orleans

The Obama administration has affirmed, continued and expanded almost all of
the draconian domestic civil liberties intrusions pioneered under the Bush
administration. Here are twenty examples of serious assaults on the
domestic rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of
association, the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, freedom of
religion, and freedom of conscience that have occurred since the Obama
administration has assumed power. Consider these and then decide if there
is any fundamental difference between the Bush presidency and the Obama
presidency in the area of domestic civil liberties.

*Patriot Act*

On May 27, 2011, President Obama, over widespread bipartisan objections,
approved a Congressional four year extension of controversial parts of the
Patriot Act that were set to expire. In March of 2010, Obama signed a
similar extension of the Patriot Act for one year. These provisions allow
the government, with permission from a special secret court, to seize
records without the owner’s knowledge, conduct secret surveillance of
