Survey of Organic Agriculture: make sure you're counted

FYI...

USDA to Conduct First Wide-Scale Survey of Organic Agriculture
How It is Changing the Face of U.S. Agriculture
WASHINGTON, Apr. 23, 2009 – This spring, USDA will
conduct the first-ever, wide-scale survey of organic farming in the United
States, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said today, to find out how the
growth of organic farming is changing the face of U.S. agriculture.

“The Organic Production Survey is a direct response to the growing
interest in organics among consumers, farmers, and businesses,” said
Vilsack. “This is an opportunity for organic producers to share their
voices and help ensure the continued growth and sustainability of organic
farming in the United States.”

2007 Census of Agriculture counted more than 20,000 U.S. farms engaged in
organic production.

The survey will look at many aspects of organic farming during the 2008
calendar year – from production and marketing practices, to income and
expenses. It will focus not only on operations that are currently engaged in
organic production, but also on those making the transition to organic
agriculture.

The results will help shape future decisions regarding farm policy, funding
allocations, availability of goods and services, community development and
other key issues. In addition, the information can help producers make
informed decisions about the future of their own farming operations.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will mail the

FINGER LAKES PERMACULTURE INSTITUTE

presents

Mushroom Weekend: Permaculture workshops on homegrown mushrooms,
forest farming and ecology

May 16 & May 17, 2009

Saturday at Cayuta Sun (http://www.cayuta.org)

11 a.m.
Mushroom Inoculation with Steve Sierigk
This hands-on workshop will take participants step-by-step through
mushroom inoculation of cut logs using
plug spawn. We will inoculate logs both for the Finger Lakes
Permaculture Institute and for your purchase.
Participants will take home one log for their workshop fee. We will
provide tools, but bringing your own cordless
drill would be appreciated.

1 p.m.
Food Forest Design with Kay McGrenaghan Cafasso
Learn about the concept of forest gardening. Design for edibles in the
different ecosystem niches of forests. We will
walk the grounds to identify some onsite species we can incorporate
into a food forest as well as discuss species not
onsite at Cayuta Sun that may be beneficial in a potential forest
garden design.

Thank You Endorsers of April 26 ISD

Dear Endorsers:

We are writing to thank you dearly for your support of April 26
International Seeds Day whether by endorsing and helping to
publicize the campaign and/or by holding an event on April 26 or
around it.

Sunday, April 26 was a great success not just in terms of the number of
organizations, authors, scientists and activists who endorsed it in four
continents, but also in terms of accomplishing our goal in reaching 102
Iraqis living in Iraq, Syria and Jordan to alert them about Order 81, US
agriculture projects in Iraq and the danger of US seeds and food. We
have communicated with Iraqi women, farm owners, agriculture experts,
farmers and journalists in these three countries. All were surprised and
have not heard of Oder 81. In fact there is no Arabic translation of
Order 81 available and we will translate it together with a group in
Baghdad.

This campaign will continue until Order 81 is revoked.

Please note that as of midnight April 27 your email addresses
and telephone numbers, which have been enlisted on our website, were
removed (but not websites/blogs), unless you request that they stay
published. This is to avoid abuse of your contact information. We also
highly appreciate from those of you who posted our press release or
events is to remove only the contact information of endorsers.

We will email you a detailed report concerning April 26 acknowledging
your and the promoters' efforts in making ISD a success. To ensure that
this happens by next week, we appreciate receiving your updates on

[Fwd: [SANET-MG] waste carbondioide conversion to fuel]

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: [SANET-MG] waste carbondioide conversion to fuel

I have provided below excerpts from a paper on truly organic chemistry.
That paper provides a method to convert carbon dioxide into feedstock
for chemical synthesis and for fuel The use of carbon dioxide in that
way may not be as potent as photosynthesis but it does provide a
potentially important contribution toward re reducing carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere. Since global warming is a dire threat the kind of truly
'organic' chemistry should not be ignored.

Synthesis of b,g-Unsaturated Acids from Allenes and
Carbon Dioxide
Michael North Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 2 – 4 2009
"There is increasing interest in the use of carbon dioxide as a
starting material for chemical reactions.[1] The main reason for
this interest is the widespread acceptance that rising atmospheric
levels of carbon dioxide are directly responsible for
global warming and the associated climate changes.[2] If waste
carbon dioxide produced by major fixed-site producers, such
as fossil-fuel power stations, oil refineries, ammonia plants,
and cement works, could be converted into feedstocks for the
chemicals industry, this would not only reduce carbon dioxide
emissions, but would also provide a new revenue stream for
these industries. However, the raw material for almost all of
the chemicals industry is currently provided by less than 10%
of the output of an oil refinery,[3] the remaining output being
