{i} Why the IT Rules are a threat to your Internet as you know it

From: Anja Kovacs <anjakovacs-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org>

Dear all,

Hope you are doing well.

As you have been concerned for long with the empowering potential of the Internet, I thought the message below might be of particular interest to you. Please feel free to share it widely in your networks. Any feedback is of course also very welcome.

Many thanks.
Best,
Anja

---------------------------------------

Recently, Shri P Rajeeve, CPI(M) MP in the Rajya Sabha from Thrissur, Kerala, filed a motion in Parliament that calls for the annulment of the Intermediary Guidelines Rules 2011 (or for short, the IT Rules). The annulment of the rules would not mean that the Internet would remain unregulated. However, it would mean that the government would need to go back to the drawing board and make a new set of regulations that ensure that your right to freedom of expression as an Indian citizen is protected online, while also making sure that that right is not abused to harm the rights of others.

What exactly is the problem with the current set of rules? And how could they affect you? To raise greater awareness about the IT Rules and why they are a threat to your Internet, the Internet Democracy Project has made a short video. Watch it here: http://youtu.be/HtA194jig3s

Please help us spread the word about this draconian set of rules by sharing the video on email, Facebook, Twitter.

Though the exact date has not yet been decided on, the motion will come up for a debate and vote before the end of the current budget session, which is on 22 May. That means that we have at the most until 22 May to ensure that this motion gets passed, and these rules are repealed. If you would like to take action to support the annulment of the rules, here are a few more things you could do:

- directly write to or call your MP and ask them to vote in support of the annulment of the rules: http://cis-india.org/internet-governance/campaigns/vote-against-internet-censorship-law

- join the Save Your Voice campaign, online and offline: https://www.facebook.com/saveyourvoice

We hope that you will add your voice to these efforts to keep the Internet in India free and open.

Thanks and best,

Anja

{i} Documentary Film Festival on May 5

Visthar invites you to a Documentary Film Festival celebrating peoples’ struggles for Justice and
Peace on May 5 in Bangalore. Held at the green, environmentally friendly Visthar campus, the festival
screens documentaries from around the country on urgent, contemporary issues. For directions to the
campus, please visit www.visthar.org.

10:30 Just One Earth (5 mins)
Just One Earth is a beautiful music video created by David Bernz, in the wake of the Fukushima accident. This
festival curtain-raiser captures the spirit of the Bhoomi Habba in 5 minutes.

10:35 Bhopali (84 mins)
Bhopali is a new feature documentary about the survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster, the
1984 gas leak in Bhopal. Today the suffering continues, prompting victims to fight for justice against
Dow Chemicals, the American corporation responsible for the disaster.

12:00 Mercury in the Mist (16 mins)
Reminding us that “We All Live in Bhopal”, the Tamil documentary-maker Amudhan follows the
destruction of the environment and the plight of the workers from mercury poisoning at a Hindustan
Unilever Plant in Kodaikanal.

12:15 Mission Oxygen (4 mins)
This short film rounds off the festival’s selection on industrial air pollution. Produced by students
from the Vijaya Vittala Institute of Technology, the film looks at the world we are leaving for our children.

12:20 Radiation Stories: Koodankulam (84 mins)
When the mainstream media muffles the voices from the ongoing people’s struggle in Koodankulam,
Amudhan breaks the silence and takes us to the villages at the center of the resistance. Completed just
before Section 144 was enforced in the area, the film presents rare footage from the protests.

2:10 Agent Orange 30 Years Later (30 mins)
Agent Orange is a neurotoxin used by the U.S. military in the Vietnam War. The chemical was produced by Dow
Chemicals, Monsanto and others. The film weaves compelling interviews with footage from the archives to
tell the story of those affected by Agent Orange thirty years later.

3:15 Jaduguda Black Magic (16 mins)
The Adivasis living near the Uranium mines in Jaduguda, Jharkand have borne the brunt of India’s nuclear
ambitions. Their story, ignored by the mainstream media, is the focus of this film by activist-director Shriprakash.

3:30 Radiation Stories: Kalpakkam (26 mins)
The last film of the festival again breaches the wall of media silence, this time around the Kalpakkam
nuclear facilities. Amudhan shines the light on the conditions of villagers affected by the nuclear
facility 60 kms from Chennai.

The Documentary Film Festival will be accompanied by an International Food Festival, Poster
Exhibitions, Dolls Exhibition, Art Workshops for Children, Music, Dance and Theatre. There is no
entrance fee.

{i} 4may:: decent work

  SALAAMS

Domestic workers form a significant part of the informal economy. They have always been marginalised as a sector. Whether they work as part timers, as full day or as live in workers, they are forced to put up with various indignities, in the privacy of the households they work in.

Domestic workers ,although estimated to be 5 lakhs in Bangalore city alone, continue to work under arbitrary rules, are largely unskilled, illiterate. Long hours of work, toil for years with no rest, often no living wage, sexual harassment, abuse, untouchability, inhumane treatment is the story of their lives. The conditions of lakhs of domestic workers, the migrant live in workers, are even more exploitative and abusive. There have been many cases of rape and murder, horror tales of children being beaten, locked in bathrooms, bitten, burnt by employers. There have been issues of bonded labour, trafficking of girls and women into domestic work. Yet these inhuman employers get off scot-free and many of them feel it is their right to employ the children and they often talk of it as a favour they are doing to society. In spite of all the harassment, domestic workers report for work, neglecting their own homes and children. Yet, they are the first to be blamed for any accident or theft that takes place inside the house.

In these exploitative, inhuman conditions, domestic workers have for years been toiling and in spite of constant appeals and memorandums to the Government, our issues have not been addressed.

The ILO CONVENTION;-How is it important to us:

The International Labour Organisation(ILO) has introduced and passed the Convention on Decent Work is Domestic workers in June 2011. It is called C 189 Domestic Workers Convention, 2011.

On the occasion of May 1st,2012, International Workers Day, we wish to focus on the important aspects of this Convention,as well as other institutional and legal mechanisms, for the domestic workers. There is an urgency to proceed on the draft National Policy for Domestic workers, at the Central Government level, and for the Social Security Board for the domestic workers , at the State Government level.

We seek your solidarity ,and help us by informing your networks, the media, employers and your domestic workers...

{i} 4may::: Invite: Dam Scam around Mumbai

On Thu, May 3, 2012 at 3:55 PM, Sitaram Shelar <sitaram.shelar-/+TpVItEt8SGglJvpFV4uA@public.gmane.org> wrote:

Dear friends,

In some shocking events, it has been found out that there are huge violations, not only from the environmental and social issues, but staggering corruption involved in the 10+ large dams coming up around Mumbai. Nearly all of them are being constructed by one contractor, when the tender conditions stipulate that only one ( or maximum 3) dams can be built by the same contractor in an irrigation circle. Other violations defy imagination. The Water Resources Minister has had to answer some difficult questions about this.

In addition to this, the ecological and social impacts of these dams are unstudied and will remain so as they do not require EIA, EMP of public hearing. None of the dams are confirming with R and R plans or Social impact Assessment. after a long struggle, one of the dam, Kalu, has been denied Forest Clearance.

With this backdrop, India Against Corruption, SANDRP, Shramik Mukti Sangathana and a number of like minded organizations are holding a workshop in Mumbai on the 4th May 2012 to discuss these issues and think of a collective way forward.

It will be great if you can make it for the meeting. Please check the attachments for an invite and a brief note on the Dam Scam made by IAC. Feel free to circulate this in your network and invite like minded friends. Please also drop a line in confirmation.

Venue:  Karnataka Sangh Hall, Vishweshwaraya Smarak Mandir, Moghul lane, Station Road, Matunga West, Mumbai -400016.(Very close to the Matunga railway Station).
Timing: 2-5 pm

Warm regards,
