Dear Sir/Madam:

A quick note to inform all that Vinay Sreenivasa and four others have just been arrested by the police/forest department on the false Charge of assault on a public servant discharging his duty (Sec 353 of IPC) and kept in Vyalikaval Police Station. Suresh Heblikar, Meenakshi Bharat and 9 others (mainly women) have been taken into preventive custody and kept in High Grounds police station. There may be more arrests, and we are yet to ascertain the details.

All of them were protesting against the illegal felling of trees on Sankey Road. Details in the attached file.

I urge each and every one of you can to come out and protest in front of the HIghGrounds or Vyalikaval POlice Stations in Bangalore.

WE also request our media friends to kindly cover this issue.

The Tibetan Art Collective and the Friends of Tibet present “A Poet, A Painter and Seeds: An Evening of Three New Faces of Tibet”. On the occasion of World Tibet Day, 6th of July is being celebrated in varied countries, simultaneously, to celebrate the unique beauty and value of Tibetan culture and thought. As part of the worldwide events, we in Delhi are presenting to you, young artists who express the dilemmas of exile hood, through their verses, brush strokes and film.

Jamyang Phuntsok (25): Born in Chauntra in Himachal Pradesh, he studied in Central School for Tibetans, Mussoorie. A Masters in Physics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, particle physics and poetry fascinate him alike. Apart from Radiohead, he indulges in Russian literature, trekking and Test cricket.

Tenzin Gyurmey (23): Born in Paonta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh, taught by his father, a traditional visual artist, he was recently launched by Peak Art Gallery in Dharamshala. A final year student at Delhi College of Arts, he contributes to the Tibetan Art Collective, with raw forms which resonate with both traditional and modern roots.

SEEDS- the film, (28:37): Made by Tenzin Dazel and Tenzing Dakpa, is set in Amar Colony in Delhi, a locality with Tibetans living in the vicinity, most of who are call center employees and college-goers. It follows a circle of friends in the eve of the controversial Olympic torch relay 2008 in New Delhi, over a single day. Dear Friends,

Till today, all programmes for slum development have been designed by people living outside slums, based on their perception of people living in slums as helpless people . In addition, the presence of slums has been viewed as a problem of housing and basic amenities. Among the people living in slums, those who are from the same state are largely from the untouchable communities and also religious and linguistic minorities. If they are from other states, a small number of them are from OBCs and MBCs. From the census it is clear that nomadic communities are also form a significant portion of the people living in slums. This shows that slums are not just a collection of those who are economically disadvantaged but are a result of a societal system which ensures that the untouchable communities remain as untouchables.

Existing laws and developmental works by government only serve to entrench the practice of untouchability and further discrimination against linguistic and religious minorities and other disadvantaged castes. Slums are nothing but a reflection of the same and it is in this context that we find ourselves today. However the system continues to divert us by saying that we are the people as shelter less Jobless or economically poor etc

Caste, Religion, Language and Political Parties have prevented us from getting organised so far. We have to over come these barriers and get organised. In this background, we have come forward to organise our own people. It has been a year since we came into existense – not just as a collective of slum groups but as a collective of all urban deprived communities. We are not just focussed on housing or access to basic amenities, instead ours is a for dignity – a movement focussed on ensuring that all of us from urban deprived communities, who are citizens of this country get a rightful share of all the resources in this country. It is a movement which will speak of our unique cultural identity. As a first step in this long journey, we are organizing this state convention in Hubli to work towards fulfilling the demands of all of our people living in slums. Do join us in as we work towards achieving social justice.

Our Demands

1. We demand our rightful share in urban land and guaranteed land rights of people living in slums

2. we demand proportional share for in central, state and urban local government budgets urban dispossessed communities

3. We demand for separate ministry for urban poverty alleviation and slum development

4. Abolish unit system in PDS and universalize PDS

5. Stop out-sourcing and contracting of Grade-4 jobs in the government and regularize those who are working currently

6. Ensure and implement Social Security measures and living wages for people in the unorganized sector

7. Keep away private interests from drinking water, food, health, education and national resources

8. Design and Implement urban development programmes in a way that does not harm the urban dispossessed communities

We, the Slum activist organisation campaigns and movements working with the people living in Slums or placed in varied situation, context , demands and work patterns. We have our own rich experiences perception knowledge concepts ideas critiques and best practices that can be shared in the process of our struggle to realise a life with dignity for all Urban deprived communities. We however hardly get occasions to share, reflect or to mutually learn from our struggles victories and defeats. hence we earnestly request you to make this on opportunity to meet, share and learn from our experiences

Around 10.500 government schools were closed in the last one decade in Karnataka.This trend is continued without any disturbance. Lack of infrastructure and low quality of education system is the key factor for this trend.In directly state government is supporting this trend to support privatization and commercialization of education.

There fore state government is not willing to implement the Right to Education Act-2009.On the other hand it is striving hard to saffronise the education system.From the last 2 years onwards silently it is conducting Bhagavad Githa Abhiya in the government primary and hischools. Ours is a secular and democratic country and it is the constitutional duty of the state to treat all religious faiths equally. Unfortunately Karnataka government is always very happy to create controversies and constitutional crisis.

Director of Primary and Secondary Education Department has issued a government circular to District Deputy Directors of Public Instruction, by asking them to organise Bhagavad Gita Abhiyana in their respective districts.It is not the duty of any secular and democratic government to teach any religion to anybody. There are thousands of religious mutts, centers, institutions and organisations to do this work.

We have to condemn this anti constitutional and anti children Abhiyana and if at all government is willing to cultivate human values in the mind set of the students, then it must start Abhiyana on Indian Constitution in order to build the just society.

In this back ground, SPJ has conducted a protest in front of Kolar district DC office on 29th June along with secular and democratic organisations and submitted an memorandum to DC by asking him to take an appropriate action to stop Bhagavad Githa Abhiyana in Kolar district and also it submitted one more memorandum exclusively on the violation of child rights, especially in the KGF town.

SPJ request all the like minded organisations to pressurise the state government to put an end to the religious activities in the school premises.
