{i} Madness in the Sunderbans - Please Act NOW!

Dear friends,
I am writing to you as a concerned human being, to share my extreme alarm at something I can only see as an assault on the fragile ecology of the Sunderbans. I am talking about a festival called Ujaan, that is scheduled to take place in Frazer Ganj, a semi-village semi-resort on the fringes of the Sunderbans. On the face of it, it claims to be a 'festival for the Sunderbans' - to raise awareness about this precious and fast-disappearing treasure. However, the way it is going to go about doing that is stupefying, to say the least. The festival involves twenty bands and several more solo acts, most of them non-acoustic. The website says several more are in the process of being confirmed. From what I could gather from their FB page and elsewhere, the organizers and volunteers number about 300, and the number of attendees could be around two or three thousand! So we are talking about maybe four thousand plus people descending on a little village which borders one of the world's most sensitive bio-diversity zones with LOUD amplified electic/electronic music playing late into the night. We are probably talking about hundreds of drunk/stoned spectators wreaking havoc on the beach and the rest of Frazer Ganj/ Bakkahli! All told, I cannot begin to imagine the kind of environmental disaster the festival itself will be! Not to mention the fact that at 2,000/- a pass, the festival will be completely out-of-reach of the local population of Frazer Ganj.
Now, raising awareness about the Sunderbans is a fantastic thing to do, and it's a wonderful idea to do so by organizing a rock concert. However, there is something However, there is something quite asinine about organizing that concert right on the fringes of the fragile Sunderbans! I am sure the people who are doing this want to do their bit to prevent man-made climate change. I am sure they are brave, committed people. However, this is not the way! This is not what the Sunderbans need of what Frazerganj needs.
Please circulate this, please tell your friends. If you know people who are going there, engage them in dialogue and try to dissuade them. If any of you know how to file a PIL against this/ get a court injunction - please tell me. I am on this ID and on 9831731422. If you know any of the organizers, please engage with them and try to make them see the madness of this.

Warmth and peace,
Arka

{i} 21,22mar:: International Conference on Good Governance and Citizen Participation

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON

"GOOD RURAL GOVERNANCE AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION"

March 21-22, 2011, Delhi Region, India

Jointly organized by the Institute of Rural Research and Development, Jindal Global Law School

and University of Baltimore School of Law

This conference is being organized against the backdrop of a unique experiment with methodology of Clinical Legal Education (CLE) carried out by the Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) of S.M. Sehgal Foundation, www.irrad.org, and supported by Clinical Programmes of Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), www.jgls.org, to bring about good governance in rural India through citizen participation. This initiative looks at preparing rural citizens into becoming effective participants in democracy to effect good governance and to address the disconnect between the promises of law and their grassroots reality.

The Constitution of India promises a life of dignity to every citizen. However, there exists a complete disconnect between this promise and its grassroots reality, especially in rural India. Having determined that lack of good governance is the main cause of this disconnect, IRRAD came up with a unique initiative to effect good rural governance. Termed as ‘Good Governance Now’, this initiative involves citizens’ effective participation in developing good governed villages. The nucleus of this initiative is a training of selected villagers for a period of one year, using CLE’s methodology of ‘learning by doing’ and to strive for social justice. IRRAD and JGLS have collaborated to further strengthen this initiative. Through this collaborative effort, IRRAD and JGLS are working to develop a model of ‘good governed districts’ that they will look at replicating in other parts of India in collaboration with other law schools. The primary issues that this initiative covers include food, health, education, employment, and social security, using the tool of the Right to Information for authoritative citizen participation.

Venue:

Day 1- March 21, 2011- India Habitat Centre, Magnolia Hall, Delhi, India

Day 2- March 22, 2011- Institute of Rural Research and Development, Gurgaon, India

{i} Invitation for a seminar on “Health per Acre – Organic Solutions to Hunger and Malnutrition” [2 Attachments]

Invitation for a seminar on “Health per Acre – Organic Solutions to Hunger and Malnutrition”

Dear Friends,

Navdanya is organizing a seminar on “Health per Acre – Organic Solutions to Hunger and Malnutrition” on March 26, 2011 from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at Conference Room No. 1, India International Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

India faces a dual crisis related to food and agriculture. First is the malnutrition and hunger crisis. Every 4th Indian is hungry (Ref : Navdanya, “Why is Every 4th Indian Hungry?”). Every third women is severely malnourished. Every second child is “wasted”. This is not “Shinning India” but “Starving India”. The second aspect of the crisis is the agrarian crisis, tragically highlighted by 250,000 farmers suicides in the last one and a half decades, driven by debt which is largely caused by high cost chemical inputs. The agrarian crisis and the food and nutrition crisis are really connected.

Taking note of the hunger and malnutrition crisis, the Government is trying to put together a Food Security Act. However, there are two serious limitations to the proposed Act. Firstly, it leaves out nutrition. Without nutrition there can be no right to food or health. Malnutrition is leading to a public health crisis, of hunger on the one hand, and obesity, diabetes etc. on the other.  Secondly, it leaves out agriculture, food producers and food production systems. Without agriculture and nutrition, there can be no food security.

Both aspects of the food crisis, the agrarian crisis on the one hand and the malnutrition crisis on the other are related to the fact that food production has become chemical intensive and is focused on “Yield per Acre”. However, yield per acre ignores the loss of nutrition which is leading to the malnutrition crisis. It also ignores the increase in costs of chemical inputs which trap farmers in debt and are leading to suicides.  “Yield per Acre” measures a part one crop grown in a monoculture. This ignores the lost nutrition in the displaced biodiversity. Thus the Green Revolution led to increase of rice and wheat with chemical intensive, capital intensive and water intensive inputs, but it displaced pulses, oil seeds, millets, greens, vegetables, and fruits from the field and from the diet.

Navdanya’s “Health per Acre” shows  that a shift to biodiverse organic farming and ecological intensification increases output of nutrition while reducing input costs. When agriculture output is measured in terms of “Health per Acre” and “Nutrition per Acre” instead of “Yield per Acre”, biodiverse ecological systems have a much higher output. This should be the strategy for protecting the livelihoods of farmers as well the right to food and right to health of all our people.

The paradigm shift we propose is a shift from monocultures to diversity, from chemical intensive agriculture to ecologically intensive, biodiversity intensive agriculture, from external inputs to internal inputs, from capital intensive production to low cost, zero cost production, from yield per acre to health and nutrition per acre, from food as a commodity to food as nourishment and nutrition. This shift addresses the multiple crises related to food systems. It shows how we can protect the environment, while protecting our farmers and our health. And we can do this while lowering costs of food production and distribution. By maximizing health per acre, we can ensure that every child, woman and man in India has access to healthy, nutritious, safe and good food.

We look forward to your participation.

Please find attached Registration form to confirm your participation and tentative program of the Seminar.

 Warm regards,

{i} invitation for PESA consultation [1 Attachment]

Dear Friends,
Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti cordially invites you participate in a two-day consultation on PESA (Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas Act) on March 2 and 3, 2011 at Gandhi Darshan, Rajghat New Delhi.  We would be greatly   honoured if you accept it.
The core objectives of this consultation are to build understanding about PESA among activists, groups and organisations working in adivasi areas and to integrate demand for implementation of PESA into campaigns and networks on other issues such as FRA. We intend to support these processes a cross various fora at regional and local levels and to contribute towards building a momentum among various groups for its proper implementation.
We believe that addressing issues and resolving problems related with governance in adivasi areas hold key to solving problems of exploitation, alienation, underdevelopment and extremism. Effective implementation of PESA is an important step in that direction.
There would be around 40 participants ranging from experts on PESA to activists/groups working on adivasi issues from various states.  A copy of the schedule of the programme is enclosed.
We do hope you will accept our invitation as we all hope to learn a lot from you.
With very warm regards,

{i} Re: (InDelhi:1070) Rural Entrepreneurship from Reliance Foundation

There comes another after the Vedanta university!! Do we really need this after the SEZ  mess in Haryana  and the 2G scam???!!!

What we need is to build the capabilities of young people from socially excluded and resource-poor communities to work  for the development of their communities; This also means that we cant be looking for high academic qualifications. Young people from among Adivasis are just learning to break the mould of generations of exploitation and going  a step beyond local schools to acquire better education.  Can we explore ways to  support such young people to enhance their skills to serve the community?
