IROM SHARMILA IN BANGALORE! PLAY ON SHARMILA BY OJAS!

Poet activist Irom Sharmila has completed 10 years of hunger fast. She is being force fed through the nose,  by the administration in Imphal. Her demand is simple: Repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) which gives absolute powers for the Indian Army to shoot, kill, torture and rape innocent people in the name of `insurgency’.

Background and other details
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination urged the Indian Government to repeal AFSPA and replace it with a more humane Act within one year. The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women also asked the Indian Government to do the same. The European Parliament also raised the demand for the repeal of AFSPA. Many human rights bodies like Amnesty International have demanded the repeal of the Act. National Bodies like the Prime Minister's Working Group on Confidence-Building Measures in Jammu and Kashmir recommended the same. Repeal of AFSPA was also recommended by the Second Administrative Reforms Commission. `The Act, for whatever reasons, has become `a symbol of oppression, an object of hate and an instrument of discrimination and high handedness,' stated Justice Jeevan Reddy Commission appointed by the Prime Minister to look review AFSPA. Jeevan Reddy Committee also recommended the removal of AFSPA. However, all these never reached the dead ears of the Indian Government so far. And the hunger fast of Irom Sharmila is going on for more than ten years.

In this context,  several organizations in Bangalore have got together and invited OJAS SV, a theatre activist from Pune, whose one woman play on Irom Sharmila has become quite famous, to perform and discuss with college students in Bangalore. The initial play `Meira Paibi’ was written by well known writer activist Civic Chandran in Malayalam. Ojas has transformed the play into Hindi and English as `Ley Mashalein’ (bearing torch), inspired by the song `Ley Mashalein Chal Pade Hai, Log Mere Gaon Ke’.

The schedule of the performances as per the present commitments is as follows:

{i} Invitation to the International Festival of People's Resistance and Struggles [1 Attachment]

Dear Friends,

RESIST! - an international people’s campaign to confront the global economic crisis and the developing conditions for rising fascism and imperialist war - invites us to join workers, peasants, women, migrants, indigenous peoples, youth, artists and many other sectors and communities from all over the world who will gather in Manila for the first International Festival of People’s Rights and Struggles (IFPRS) from July 5-6, 2011.

The IFPRS is a space for peoples from Asia and the Pacific, Africa, North America, Europe and Latin America and the Middle East to learn, share and interact with one another on the issues and challenges to the livelihoods, rights and liberties that they confront.  It is also an occasion to celebrate the victories and lessons of people’s struggles all over the world.

In particular, RESIST! would like to invite us to participate at the RESIST colloquium entitled ‘Making sense of the global crisis and new world disorder: Challenges and opportunities for peoples struggles and alternatives’ to be held in the Philippines on July 5, 2011 at the main campus of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City as one of the main activities of the IFPRS.

The RESIST colloquium aims to examine the continued unfolding and intensification of the global economic crisis and analyze the implications of broader trends towards increasing multipolarity in international political and economic relations.  Kindly refer to the attached draft program for the event.

The IFPRS is jointly organized by the International Migrants Alliance (IMA), International Women’s Alli ance (IWA), Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), RESIST, People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), People’s Movement on Climate Change (PMCC) and IBON International.

Please note, however, that while they will look after ensuring the best venue, comfortable accommodation and an enjoyable and enriching conference, they are unable to provide funding for attendees. Perhaps by sending this invitation early it will provide you the time to raise resources in support of your participation.

Please contact RESIST! immediately at secretariat-I0sE4L0ToMYFpTl37D4Jjg@public.gmane.org and gvedeja-jbTTclki/rc@public.gmane.org to confirm your participation in this event or if you have any queries, feedback and/or suggestions or request for further details.  We also encourage you to suggest names of individuals and organizations who would be interested in attending this event.

Thanks a lot!

Long live international solidarity!
Saravanan

{i} 8th Feb meeting at ISI on Women's concerns for the 12th 5-yr planning process

Dear friends:

Greetings from TEDS Trust.

As most of you are aware, the government is holding consultations with civil society for inputs into the Approach paper for the 12th Five-year plan.

Here's an opportunity to share our concerns and inputs with the Central Government.  On 8th February, TEDS Trust, in collaboration with Indian Social Institute, Bangalore, has organised a one-day consultation on this subject for about 20 participants.  If you are concerned about any issue relating to the issues of women at the grassroots, we would like you to share your inputs and help us draft the recommendations to the government. Please do plan to participate in the meeting, but let us know in advance, as places are limited. There is no charge for participation. Inform us by email at isiwunit-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org to confirm participation
 or call Shanti at 9980331471.

Thanks.

Dear Friends,

We are happy to inform you that the Indigenous Seed Crusader Shri Prakash Singh Raghuvanshi will be here at Sambalpur with us on the 5th of February 2011.

On that day, we are organizing two programmes as follows:

  1. Interaction with farmers at Kusumdihi in Rengali Block from 11 AM to 2 PM.
  2. Interaction with farmers, civil society members, media, academia and others concerned at Panthanivas, Sambalpur from 6 PM to 8 PM.

We request you to please join us either any or both of the programmes, depending on your time and suitability, and encourage the Indigenous Seeds Movements.

For your information, Prakash Singh Raghuvanshi is a high school dropout and visually impaired farmer from Tadia, a village in Northern India. <*>[Attachment(s) from Prarthana Unkalkar included below]

Hello all,

Many community organisations fail to make the best use of volunteers because
they have little or no process for supporting and managing voluntary
helpers. This will be a very good opportunity for you to network, share
ideas and learn on how to best utilise and manage a volunteer and have
volunteer policies in place for your organisation. For your organisational
development and benefit, don't miss it.

By the end of the two day workshop participants will have...

*	a good understanding of the concepts of volunteering and volunteer
management
*	identified some of the tools, methods and skills needed to set up a
volunteer management system (VMS)
*	drafted basic policies and procedures for the operation of their own
VMS
*	explored key aspects of volunteering, such as effective recruitment
methods
*	considered the importance of maintaining volunteers' motivation and
goodwill by providing appropriate support, recognition and resources
*	understood the value of feedback from volunteers in retaining
voluntary helpers

Last 2 days to confirm and might be you wont get such an opportunity of
knowing how to retain a volunteer and how to best utilise a volunteer's
time, skills and passion for next many months!!! Confirm now and see your
organisation growing through volunteer's support!!!

Thanks and quickly confirm your presence to Dipika at
dipika@...

P.S: Plz ignore for yourself if already registered and spread a word to your
