I, have been selected to present a paper in Sociolinguistics Symposium 18,

(Negotiating Transnational Space and Multilingual Encounters) which is to be held on

1-4 September 2010, Southampton, UK. The title of my paper is "Language, Caste and the Discourse of Discrimination". In this paper i explore the language spoken by the "scavenging" population across south India. The important aspect of my finding is that most of the scavenging population in different states speak a language that is considered as non-native by the state. The aim of the paper is to present a new persceptive nformation of states in India.

 

I have been provided financial support to meet my flight tickets. But i would require some financial support to meet my VISA and accomodation expenses.

 

Therefore I request you to provide me financial support to meet the above expenses.

{i} Apeal for Help: Floods in Pakistan

Dear All:
The Situation at Flood affected Areas of khyber-pakhtoonkhwa, specially in Nowshehra and Charsada Districts is going from bad to worse with the passage of time due to following facts:
1) The Flood mainly affected peshawar valley, which includes three districts namely Nowshehra, Charsada and Peshawar Districts.
2) The Flood affected more than ten lacs( 1000000) peoples.
3) So far more than twelve hundred peoples (1200) lost their lives, and the rate is increasing as many peoples are still missing.
4) The main affectees of flood is women and children.
Immediate Help At The Moment:
The following immediate help is strongly needed:
1). The first thing which is needed is food items and drinking water as to save life.
2) the second indispensable thing is shelter and protection thereby needs camps and tents.
3) Rescue activities must be started to rescue those who are surrendered and restrained by fatal water.It needs boats.
4)Last but not least, the health of the affectees is another great challange, as fatal diseases may break out in the flood affected areas.
It is Humbly requested that all the donors, philanthropists and NGOs must take notice of this disastor.

On behalf of the Action North-East Trust (The Ants) team, we are pleased to invite you to participate in a talk and discussion on Meghalaya to be held on 14th August, Saturday 2010 from 6:30 pm - 7.30 pm at The Ants café. 2023/B, 14th Main, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar Bangalore- 560038.

 

Meghalaya is one of the most peaceful and beautiful states in India.  It is the centre of a vibrant educational community thus making it one of the leading states in literacy in the country. It is also renowned for its love - and endless talent - in music. A unique feature of Meghalaya is its matrilineal system - where lineage and inheritance are traced through women.

 

The discussion will be led by Calvin Kharshiing and Sheppard Lyngdoh who are both from Meghalaya.

 

Calvin Kharshiing is the Principal Director of Commercial Audit, in the Bangalore office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.  He was born and brought up in Shillong, Meghalaya. He holds a Masters degree in Economics from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong and an Executive MBA from University of Queensland, Australia. He has about 18 years of work experience and has worked in various parts of India.

 

Sheppard Lyngdoh is currently a Senior Manager in Wipro Technologies, Bangalore. He was also born and brought up in Shillong. He completed his Bachelors of Technology from IIT Madras and a Post Graduate in Management from IIM Calcutta. He also has about 18 years of work experience and has worked in various IT organizations.

 

This event is aimed at creating an occasion to engage people who are interested in the North East as well as a to create a platform for discussion on the opportunities, the potentials and the challenges faced by these states.
