(invites) New Publication on the Jarawa Tribal Reserve, Andaman Islands

Apologies for Cross Posting

Dear Friends,
We are very happy to announce the release of a new publication on the
Jarawa Tribal Reserve of the Andaman Islands:

THE JARAWA TRIBAL RESERVE DOSSIER: CULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITIES
IN THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS

Edited by: PANKAJ SEKHSARIA & VISHVAJIT PANDYA

Prepared by KALPAVRIKSH under the LOCAL AND INDEGENOUS KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS
(LINKS) PROGRAM of UNESCO.

No. of Pages: 212; 12 colour plates; 11 colour maps
---

SYNOPSIS:
One of the most distinctive, but relatively little known features of the
Andaman Islands is an entity of land and sea called the Jarawa Tribal
Reserve (JTR) ? a space legally notified in the name and, arguably, the
interests of the Jarawa tribal community. Until recently, the Jarawa
were hostile to outsiders. As a result, those who might otherwise have
exploited the resources of the reserve ? poachers, settlers and
developers ? were denied access.

However, the Jarawa have now chosen to cease hostilities, and the
borders of the Jarawa Tribal Reserve have become permeable to intrusion,
even though legally off limits to outsiders.

(invites) Thank you Invites...

Dear Friends,

The Festival of Justpeace was a huuuuuuuuuge  success.   The press release below gives the highlights of the festival.  Thank you very much for announcing the various events through invites.  We really appreciate your support  in disseminating the information  with regular postings.

Through this mail, we also like to thank the Bangalore public and  friends  for their  enthusiastic response and  creative involvement in the various events at the festival.

Look forward to your continued support and collaboration,

Warm regards

Mercy Kappen

Festival of Just Peace

Bangalore celebrated the annual Festival of Just Peace on May 1 organized by Visthar. Over 2000 participants from 12 countries (US, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia , Thailand, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, and Finland) joined Bangaloreans in recognizing and celebrating campaigns for just peace. Leading organic farmer Dr. Narayan Reddy inaugurated the festival at the Visthar campus.

The day-long festival included a Food Festival, Arts and Craft Festival and a documentary Film Festival. Children attended workshops on pottery, Warli painting, paper-making, toy-making and broom-making. A Warli wall featuring myriad scenes of village life portrayed in the Warli art tradition welcomed visitors to the Festival.

The Right to Food and Food Sovereignty were the focus of this year’s festival. According to David Selvaraj, Director of Visthar, “The carnival showcases our hope for food security and healthy food for all. The carnival also heralds a message of support for all those working towards the goal of food security, right to food and food sovereignty. More importantly it is a message of solidarity with those who eke out a living in a survival economy.”

What participants say:

Maijja Walta (Finland): “This is my first time at the festival. It’s great to see Bangolreans campaigning for Food Security with such an innovative festival”

Max Ediger (USA): “I have been bringing my students to this festival every year – it’s a great way for people to learn about the struggles from around the world. We have more in common than we sometimes think.”

Ashok (Bangalore): “I loved the Warli workshop best. It’s a joy to see how simple, traditional art forms can be so beautiful.”

A Festival of Festivals

The Festival of Just Peace is organized in tandem with the School of Peace, a program that brings activists from 8 countries in South and South East Asia.

The Food Festival presented traditional cuisine from around the world. Visitors enjoyed   Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Nepalese  food along with traditional foods from Goa, North Karnataka, and Kerala.

The Bangalore Film Society presented a Film Festival on Food Security with a selection of documentaries from India, US, Cuba, Argentina, Holland, Vietnam and Myanmar. The documentaries challenged the ethics of industrial food processing and showed alternate models of food from across the world.

The Festival featured an Arts and Cultural Expressions evening with performances in Kathak by Nadam, Poetry recital by Dingri Narasappa,  performances by Born Free Art School , Indian Social Institute and the School of Peace.  The festival culminated with a Women-in-Black candle-lit vigil organized by Vimochana around the steps of the ancient well in the campus.

The festival is an initiative of Visthar and the Interfaith Co-operation Forum, in collaboration with over 40 Civil Society Organizations in South India, including Right to Food Campaign, Sahaja Samrudha, Green Peace, Green Foundation, Uravu and Kanavu.

(invites) School books for free distribution

Dear Friends,

As a part of its social responsibility, Pearson Education last year distributed over 3 lakh copies of their school books to NGOs involved with education of children. This was done free of cost.

This year we have about 75 thousand copies of various school textbooks, which we again want to send to interested NGOs. I am attaching a list that gives the break-up of the various books.

It would be helpful if an NGO requests for a minimum of 1000 copies (one thousand), i.e. it could be 100 copies of one book, 50 of another one and 500 of something else, but the total should be at least 1000.

There is of course no upper limit.

Please pass this on to people who work in this area. We would be happy if the distribution is as wide as possible.

Whoever is interested can write to me.

Warmly,

(invites) An activist and his films: Remembering Sarat, 8th May

An activist and his films: Remembering Sarat
8th May 2010, 7 – 9 pm
<at> Gulmohar, India Habitat Centre
Lodi Road, New Delhi

C. Saratchandran 1958 – 2010

Documentary film maker, C. Saratchandran died in a train accident in Kerala on March 31 2010. Friends, colleagues and film makers are organising a one day retrospective of his films on May 8, 2010 across India.

Sarat’s films portray the trajectory of some of the key people’s resistance movements in Kerala. (For more on Sarat’s life and films see: http://www.saratchandran.com)

In Delhi we will screen two such films. Friends will speak about his films and the issues he highlighted with his camera.

Join us to remember Sarat and his work.

Programme

Activism and Films:
Speakers include Professor A K Ramakrishnan, Vijayan MJ, Aanchal Kapur and Sanjay Kak

Screenings:

The Bitter Drink (2003)
26 mins/ English
This film documents the formative days of a David and Goliath battle. The people of Plachimada (in Kerala), a majority of them tribals, launched a struggle against one of the most powerful corporations in the world - the Coca Cola Company.

To die for land – the ultimate sacrifice (2009)
30 mins/English subtitles
This film captures the dalit-adivasi land reclamation struggle in Chengara, Kerala. Located in Pathanamthitta district, Chengara is witness to the occupation, by some 5000 dalit-adivasi families, of over 2000 acres of land illegally claimed by the Harrison Malayalam Company Ltd. For the people who took over this commercial rubber plantation, the occupation is a defiant way to highlight their situation - over the years, plantation companies in collusion with state agencies have ensured that dalits and adivasis are now alienated from their ancestral homes.

(invites) Call for papers: Women and food

http://www.ourhenhouse.org/2010/05/call-for-papers-women-and-food/

Here is an interesting call for papers, especially for those interested in a scholarly examination of the feminist implications of dairy and egg production:

What are you eating, and what’s eating you? Women are frequently the target audience for many consumption-based industries, especially the food industry. MP Journal seeks academic papers, book reviews and other well-written inquiries on the subject of women and food. All aspects of women and food are welcome, such as women in the food industry (from fry cook to Rachel Ray, from immigrant farm workers to food chemists, from high school home economics teacher to Martha Stewart), women as family food planner and preparer, dieting, eating disorders, food as reward or punishment, social status and food, social role of food, agriculture, animal husbandry, food critics, cookbook authors, the role of mothers and mother figures in the development of eating habits (good and bad), women as the keeper of family food traditions, food and sex, and alternative food lifestyles (vegetarianism, veganism, raw diets, etc).

Submissions may be in any accepted academic format such as MLA, APA, Legal Bluebook, or Chicago Style, but must be consistent throughout and thoroughly and carefully edited.
