(invites) OISO (Oxford Islamic Studies Online)

Oxford Islamic Studies Online (OISO)

This authoritative, dynamic resource brings together the best current scholarship in the field for students, scholars, government officials, community groups, and librarians to foster a more accurate and informed understanding of the Islamic world. Encompassing over 3,500 A-Z reference entries, chapters from scholarly and introductory works, Quran materials, primary sources, images, maps, and timelines, Oxford Islamic Studies Online offers a multi-layered reference experience designed to provide a first stop for anyone needing information and context on Islam.

Oxford Islamic Studies Online is available by subscription to institutions and individuals.

What's Inside?

Oxford Islamic Studies Online brings together the work of the world's leading scholars to provide users with the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative online resource in the field.

A-Z Subject Entries

The A-Z core content features major reference works, including the new Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World (March 2009), a six-volume work covering the full geographical and historical extent of Islam. This new reference updates, expands, and revises much of the standard Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, which is also included on the site and will remain available in full, allowing users access to archived articles that have been updated in the new work. In addition, The Islamic World: Past and Present, a reference created by scholars to be accessible to readers at all levels, offers articles on everything from the Abbasid Caliphate to the life of Zaynab, granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad. The A-Z content also includes the critically acclaimed The Oxford Dictionary of Islam.

Biographies

The site contains some 1,000 biographies of the men and women who have made an impact on the Islamic world over the centuries. See sample biographical entries on the founder of the faith, the Prophet Muhammad, and a biography of path-breaking Muslim feminist Fatima Mernissi.

Chaptered Works

The Oxford History of Islam features detailed topical chapters by leading Muslim and non-Muslim scholars, covering the origins and historical development of Islam--its faith, community, institutions, sciences, and arts. Teaching Islam is a resource for educators on how to teach such topics as Islamic Law, the Qur'an, and women in Islam. A guide to the chapters in Teaching Islam can be found in the Learning Resources area of the site. In addition, the question-and-answer based What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam provides a useful guide to the beliefs and lifestyles of contemporary Muslims around the world. To see individual chapter listings, visit the Browse section.

Primary Source Documents

Selected and translated by leading scholars, and prefaced by editorial introductions to provide contextmany of which were specially commissioned for this site over 150 influential primary source documents are currently available. Including excerpts from seminal books, transcripts of speeches, fatwas, statements posted on Arabic internet sites and other sources, these texts cover perspectives from leaders in the Islamic world, activists and respected Muslim scholars representing a variety of schools of thought. Materials range from Qasim Amin's revolutionary late 19th-century writings on "The Emancipation of Woman" to Osama bin Laden's 1998 fatwa against the United States. The currently available documents have been drawn from three of Oxford's most respected primary source collections on Islam: Islam in Transition, Modern Islam, and Liberal Islam.

Quranic Studies Resources

The Quran is made accessible by means of numerous tools, with references to Quranic chapters and verses linked to the Quran; a verse look-up tool, and for in-depth study, two interpretations: The Quran, a modern prose version from M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, and the classic verse edition from A.J. Arberry, The Koran Interpreted. Either text can be studied alone, side by side, or in combination with the first electronic version of Hanna Kassis' A Concordance of the Quran, a unique and valuable reference that links English words and their corresponding transliterated Arabic terms to passages, chapters and verses in the Qur'an.

Click here to view a sample side-by-side display of the Quran interpretations and Concordance.

Images and Maps

Some 600 images and maps offer acute visual, historical, and geopolitical perspectives on global Islam. Visual materials can be studied in conjunction with entries on the site or on their own, and later updates will further expand the program. Geographic resources include over 40 full-color maps and 20 articles from the latest edition of the Atlas of the World's Religions.

Timelines

There are two timelines to provide reference and context on the history of Islam and its role in global affairs. The primary timeline documents over 1,000 historic moments in Islamic historybirths, deaths, reigns, warswith links to related content within the site. The timeline of Islamic history can be viewed alone, or side-by-side with a timeline of general world history events at corresponding periods.

Learning Resources

Students, teachers, and outreach professionals will benefit from this growing section, which includes The Geography of the Islamic World, a page with thematically organized links to the text and maps from the latest edition of the Atlas of the World's Religions; an A-Z glossary; the question-and-answer guide What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam; editorially selected and annotated links to off-site internet resources; a chapter-based guide to Teaching Islam; thematic guides on issues related to the Islamic world such as the Arab-Israeli conflict; and lists of suggested further readings about all aspects of Islam and the Quran.

Search and Browse by Era, Topic, and Region

In addition to the standard quick Search box, the special Search forms and Browse feature are particularly valuable research tools. Refine search, Browse and the search forms allow users to efficiently find the information they need within the nearly 4,000 articles, chapters, primary source documents, images and maps within the site. While most search results can be sorted by content type, topics, eras, and regions, the special Search forms also make it easy to target information based on criteria such as branch of Islam, profession, Quranic terms, bibliographic references, type of primary source and much more. Within Browse, all userssubscribers and non-subscribers alikecan use the A-Z Jump feature, view by content type and select eras, main topics and regional filter selections (subscribers can navigate listings to access the full content of any source within the site; public visitors can click through to any of the 2,500 entries from The Oxford Dictionary of the Islamic World).

Archived Articles

When articles in The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World update content from The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, the latter continue to be accessible as "Archived articles" to allow users to compare perspectives between 1995 and the present, and conduct other types of in-depth research. In result lists, archived entries are indicated by the presence of a file cabinet icon, and links between archived and primary articles help users move back and forth to compare articles. Archives are always included in Browse lists, and there is a check-box option to "Include archived entries from The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World" in Main, Biography and Bibliography searches.

(invites) Inviting you for the Public protest ( Dharna cum Fast) from 15th April to 19th April, 2010 in New Delhi to expose the proposed Food ''Insecurity'' Act of the Government of India. [1 Attachment]

Public protest in DELHI to expose the

PROPOSED
FOOD “INSECURITY” ACT
Of the Government of India

DHARNA CUM FAST OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT
JANTAR MANTAR, NEW DELHI

15th April to 19th April, 2010

Dear Friends,

The steering committee of the Right to Food Campaign invites all of you to join us from the 15th to 19th of April, 2010 at Jantar Mantar, outside Parliament in Delhi for a Dharna cum fast to protest against the "Food ‘Insecurity’ Bill" sent to the Union Cabinet by the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGOM). As you are aware the EGOM drafted National Food Security Act proposes a single entitlement of Rs. 25 kgs of grain per BPL household in the name of Food Security. (The campaign's protest letter to the PM is attached).

Since the Parliament begins on the 15th of April, 2010 it is important to knock on their doors the first day itself and let them know about the betrayal that the Government of India would be committing if it accepts this draft bill. It is also our belief that this is an opportune time to present our demands once again on the Right to Food and Food Entitlements Act to the Parliamentarians and leaders of all Political Parties.

We are hoping that representatives of different movements and grass root organizations from all over the country including eminent jurists, academics and writers will join in the protest.

It is our plan to conclude the Dharna on the 19th of April with a panel discussion of speakers from different Political parties, Policy makers, Grass Root Activists where the Campaign’s nationwide movement against such a bill will be announced.

We are hoping that you and members from your organisation will join in the protest in Delhi. We need to be at Jantar Mantar in large numbers. Let us all resolve to make this Dharna and  fast a success and expose the malicious intent of the Government through its proposed "National Food ‘Insecurity’ Act".

We also take this opportunity to give a call to groups all over the country to mobilise against this betrayal at district and State levels through some public action.

Please contact us for further information on the numbers given below and kindly confirm your presence and participation soon for logistical ease and management.

We are,

Annie Raja (National Federation for Indian Women), Anuradha Talwar (New Trade Union Initiative), Arun Gupta& Radha Holla (Breast Feeding Promotion Network of India), Arundhati Dhuru and Sandeep Pandey (National People’s Movement of India), Ashok Bharti (National Conference of Dalit Organizations), Anjali Bhardwaj, Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey (National Campaign for People’s Right to Information), Asha Mishra and Vinod Raina (Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti), Colin Gonsalves (Human Rights Law Network), Jean Dreze (Allahabad University), Kavita Srivastava (People’s Union for Civil Liberties), Mira Shiva and Vandana Prasad (Jan Swasthya Abhiyan), Paul Diwakar (National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights),  Subhash Bhatnagar (National Campaign Committee for Unorganized Sector workers), V.B.Rawat (Social Development Foundation)

On behalf of the action northeast trust (the ants) team, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the Northeast Documentary Film Screening and a talk on Mizoram to be held on Saturday, 10 April 2010 from 5:30 pm -7.30 pm at the ants café. 2023/B, 14th Main, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar Bangalore- 560038

A film “What’s with the Bamboo Dance” - Directed by Moji Riba will be screened which will be followed by a small presentation on Mizoram State and discussion. The film was about “an account of the 3 lakh-strong Young Mizo Association (YMA). The film explores the experience of YMA and how the traditional code of rightful conduct called ‘twalhmgainha’ in Mizoram has been re-invented”.

The panel discussion will be a real opportunity to get insights from a man who has been actively involve in Bangalore Mizoram Association. Accompanying Mr. Madawnga will be the much inspiring, Miss Gospel, a young student who is so zealous about the issues of Northeast India. The event is particularly aimed at creating an occasion to engage the minds of people who are interested in the issues of Northeast India and also to introduce the northeast states to the rest of India. It is only in the northeast that we realize that the term northeast is a misnomer as even the existing States cannot truly represent the 200 or more ethno-linguistic communities that reside here.

We wish to introduce the diversity and the strengths of the various states here. We shall be proud to introduce Mizoram as the only State in India where you can get government work done without paying a bribe or where you can see shops without shopkeepers.

We request you to kindly accept the invitation to attend and participate in the event.

Kindly register your names with Mr. Thomas Project Coordinator Mob: 9972511594

Ph: 08041715639 or e-mail: antsnm <at> gmail.com before 9th April 2010.

Warm regards,

the ants team
