(invites) Karnataka Social Watch workshop on 11 March 2010 at Institute of Agriculture Technologists, Queens Road, Bangalore

Workshop on ‘Monitoring Institutions of governance’,

A workshop by Karnataka Social Watch[1]

11th March 2010, 9.30am - 5.00pm, Institute of Agriculture Technologists, Queens Road, Bangalore

Institutions of governance become a crucial link in maintaining the equilibrium rendering democracy more stable and meaningful.  We are aware that these institutions themselves are under various pulls and pressures have become the ‘weakest link’ in the crucial process. The health of these institutions, therefore, is of great significance to sustain the twin challenges of democracy and development.

It is at this crucial juncture that Social Watch process has expressed its commitment to contribute and intervene in form of ‘Citizens’ Report on Governance and Development’ which looks at the performance of the four nodal institutions of governance, namely; the Parliament, the Executive, the Judiciary and the institutions of Local Self Governance. The Report seeks to create an alternate governance discourse by putting the knowledge and information about the performance of these institutions in the public domain. The Report is presented to the citizens as an advocacy tool in the hope that it will empower civil society to ask relevant questions which will give a push towards people oriented governance.

Karnataka Social Watch invites you to a one day workshop on                             ‘Monitoring institutions of governance’ on 11th March 2010 (Thursday),                9.30am – 5pm, Institute of Agriculture Technologists (IAT), Queens Road, Bangalore.  This workshop marks as an initial step towards bringing the Karnataka Social Watch report 2009-2010.

Keeping in mind the enormity of the functioning of the government and equally the interventions by the civil society, it is a difficult task to understand its depth on one side and document the performance of the institutions of governance on the other.  The one day workshop looks at a few select themes (governance & financial reforms, human development and human rights) to understand ‘how the processes of reforms’ have affected our lives.  We feel that having a focused understanding of the themes by knowing from those who have observed them (academician, organizations, activists and civil society) would provide us an opportunity to take stock of the situation[2].

We would also identify the scope of the Karnataka Social Watch report 2009-2010, as this would be again a process oriented and will definitely lay foundation for the 2010-2011 report.

We look forward to seeing you on 11th March 2010, 9.30am at IAT.

(invites) 22-26Mar:: GEN Forum: Using Leadership and Management to Collaborate with Contraceptive Security Committees

GEN Forum: Using Leadership and Management to Collaborate with Contraceptive Security Committees, March 22-26
http://globalexchange.msh.org

Management Sciences for Health (MSH) invites you to participate in the international virtual Forum: “Using Leadership and Management to Collaborate with Contraceptive Security Committees”, to be held from March 22 to 26, 2010. This event is organized by the Global Exchange Network for Reproductive Health (GEN) and financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In recent years, many countries have been creating and developing Contraceptive Security (CS) Committees which incorporate representatives from multiple institutions of the public and private sector, cooperating agencies, NGOs, and other organizations involved in the development of family planning programs. The goal of CS Committees is to strengthen family planning programs and ensure the supply of contraceptive inputs at the country level. While many committees launched with enthusiasm from their members, many have experienced a gradual reduction in terms of technical assistance, participation and contributions from their members. Furthermore, many committees’ meetings have become infrequent, in some cases achievements have been limited, and, occasionally, the responsibility as well as the work of the committee as a whole has fallen exclusively to one group or sector.

Undoubtedly, creating and maintaining a clear vision, developing a plan to achieve goals, and ensuring the continuity, commitment, and contributions of multi-sectoral committees constitutes a quite difficult and constant challenge. In order to mobilize, align and focus individuals from different sectors, with their own goals and resources, it is necessary to apply very effective leadership and management practices, approaches, and tools. That is why on this occasion we are dedicating this forum to share leadership practices which can help us to work more effectively with CS Committees.

During this forum, we will share leadership and management practices that can strengthen collaboration with CS committees, how we can use leadership and management to strengthen our skills and effectiveness, and analyze how these leadership practices and tools were applied in Mali and the Dominican Republic. We will conclude with a discussion about how we can improve our leadership and management practices so as to collaborate more effectively with the CS committees in our own countries.

In this forum you will have the opportunity to:

1. Review effective Leadership and Management practices and tools, including the Challenge Model, focused on achieving results.

2. Share how we applied Leadership and Management practices in our work with CS committees and how to apply these practices to strengthen the work of CS committees.

3. Become familiar with and discuss the Leadership and Management practices that were applied, the challenges addressed and the success attained in two interesting cases: Mali and Dominican Republic.

4. Develop commitments on how to improve your Leadership and Management skills in order to collaborate more effectively with the CS committees in your country.
We invite you to participate from March 22 to 26, 2010. If you did not register yet, we remind you that registration is open and available at the following website:http://globalexchange.msh.org

Follow the instructions below:

• Log on the home page of the Global Exchange Network for Reproductive Health: http://globalexchange.msh.org
