Technologies Ltd.,), Mr. Richard Stallman (Founder – GNU Project), Hon'ble Justice Yatindra Singh
(Allahabad High Court, India), Mr. Rahul Matthan (Partner, Trilegal ) and have discussed issues
relating to "Legal Aspects of Business Process Outsourcing", "Biotechnology and the Law" and "Free and
Open Source Software".

This year, the Law and Technology Committee in association with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS)
would be organizing Consilience-2010 with the topic for discussion as "Internet Intermediary
Liability in India". This year's edition of Consilience seeks to not only bring leading academicians to
debate upon the topic of contention but also looks to increase and encourage student participation.

In this regard, we invite abstracts related to the topic tracks of discussion as enumerated in the concept

and the argument that they seek to put forward and should strictly conform to the guidelines below. The
abstracts must be footnoted and the conference follows a very strict policy on plagiarism and runs all
submissions through plagiarism detection software. Selected abstracts will be notified on January
25th and the authors are required to submit a final paper by March 5th. Authors are required to note that the
organizers reserve the right to reject the final paper even after acceptance of the abstract if it is felt
that the final paper is unsuitable to be presented, being off topic, too different from the abstract,
containing plagiarized material, of low quality or any other such reason. Only submissions made through
our webstie will be accepted.

(invites) Demonstration on Jan 2nd in Solidarity with Himanshu Kumar and Against Operation Greenhunt

The state of Chhattisgarh has been witnessing massive displacement of adivasis because violence by Salwa Judum and other forces deployed by the Central government. Nearly 3,00,000 adivasis in 700 villages have been displaced while this resource rich land is being sold off to mining corporations, both Indian and foreign.  Accompanying this displacement is an equally brutal violation of human rights, through perpetration of torture, rape and physical violence against adivasi

In this regard, civil society and concerned individuals have come together as the Campaign for Justice and Peace (Karnataka)  to organize a peaceful demonstration in an attempt to show solidarity with Himashu Kumar, of the Vanvasi Chetna Ashram (VCA) in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, wherein he will complete eight days of fasting towards self purification. Members of this campaign comprise civil society groups, students, lawyers and individuals who condemn Operation Greenhunt, a military offensive launched by the Central Government in the "Maoist-affected" states.

When: January 2nd (Saturday)  4:30 pm to 6: 30 pm

Where: Mahatma Gandhi Statue, M.G. Road, Bangalore.

Please come dressed in WHITE and bring as many people as you can

------

The Campaign for Justice and Peace (Karnataka) are organizing this demonstration to raise awareness amongst people of Bangalore as a response to the following:

§  Forcible eviction of more than 3 lakh adivasis, nearly half the total population of Dantewada are displaced. Their womenfolk raped, daughters killed and youth maimed.

§  About 50,000 adivasis who could not escape into the jungle were herded together into refugee camps run and managed by the Salwa Judum. 640 villages are empty now.

§  Nearly 50,000 adivasis have migrated to AP and Orissa. About 2 lakh adivasis are still hiding for their lives in the jungles of Chhattisgarh.

§  Independent reports reveal that adivasis have no access to food, shelter, water, health and education facilities. The vigilante forces have created an extreme climate of fear and repression. The State Government has failed to carry out the rehabilitation of adivasis as directed by the Supreme Court.

§  The Supreme Court has directed the government to file an Action Taken Report on the implementation of compensation and rehabilitation measures and register FIRs against cognizable offences.

Our demands to the Governments of India and Chhattisgarh are:

§  Withdraw all paramilitary forces in adivasi areas and disband Salwa Judum

§  Implement the Supreme Court’s order on rehabilitating adivasis in Chhattisgarh

§  Repeal the Unlawful Activity (Prevention) Act & Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act

§  Cancel all existing MOUs with large corporations (especially those engaged in mining minerals) and start dialogue with adivasi representatives

§  Restore civil administration in all villages of Chhattisgarh

§  Stop displacement of adivasis

(invites) Photo exhibition on Karnataka's Flood Victims - Bharati Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore: 7th-9th Jan

----- Forwarded Message ----
From: Eaha M <eshamaster-/E1597aS9LQ@public.gmane.orgm>

The Deluge and after

Life and Tribulations after the Karnataka Floods

A

s if the grinding poverty in North Karnataka was not enough, the people there were caught in the most harrowing floods the state has ever experienced. Within a day, 5000 villages in 12 districts were inundated and 227 people were washed away to their deaths.

‘The Deluge and after’ is a homage to them and millions of others who survived the floods but are dying to find a way to rebuild their lives in the midst of only a minimal support from the state. As always, it is the landless and marginal farmers, children and women especially from dalit families who have been impacted the most. Houses have collapsed, belongings have been destroyed and fields have become uncultivable. For the already poor the drudgery has only got more dismal.

The pictures in the exhibition chronicle the lives of the traditionally marginalized people and how they are facing up to the new challenge brought in by the untimely floods. Neglect in relief and rehabilitation have led to lives being lost even after the waters receded. The Deluge and after comes a full 100 days after the floods with an objective of showcasing the continued neglect towards the survivors and their fight to stay alive and to realize their rights as citizens of this country.

(invites) 6jan: Invited to consultative group: city planning

From: Harish Poovaiah <harishpoovaiah-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org>

Friends,

Another opportunity has come our way to share our experiences towards city planning and make a difference.

Ministry of Urban Development has commissioned School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi to study about alternate modes of preparing Master plans; as such a team of researchers is going to major metropolis to hold consultative meetings with experts. It is hoped that many of its recommendations would get implemented. The team has already visited Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata …and now on its way to BANGALORE during Jan. 5 – 9, 2010.

A small group of experts interested in this consultative dialogue, with insights to share with the Ministry are being requested to spare their half day on Jan. 6, 2010 between 3 – 6 pm at Jaaga (jaaga.wikidot.com...opposite Hockey stadium Gate/ along Rhenius Street / next to TV 9 office / near Bhatija Nursing Home, Divyashree Chambers & Venkataraman office at Shantinagar). Following the meet, the group is invited to Hotel Lalith Ashok to listen to an IIA talk on SPACE at 7.00 pm, followed by drinks/ dinner.  Kindly bear with the scheduling,  which happens on a working afternoon. The team intends to meet people and institutions individually later on.

People have varied feelings towards their ideas – pessimistic to possessive, and also react to ideas varyingly – apprehensively and appreciatively. If we shed our value loaded pro-actions and reactions, we may dialogue towards better possibilities.  Individually, few of us have done excellent work in the urban contexts and have opinions with great validity. By holding them back within us, the ideas may die down one day. By sharing them, they may flourish. Can we meet to such an end?

I am mailing to you all, whose mail id’s are in my system. There could be many other experts, whom I do not know about, including the Government officials. Kindly spread the word around to all concerned.

Please write to me, call upon me, ….. Confirming your and other’s participation.

Why am I writing to you all?  Only because I have been requested to do this un-enviable act of coordinating this meet !!!! Anyway, let us make it a success.

Warmly

Sathya

A Call To Struggle….for Water….for Life

Plachimada reels under water shortage. Chittur taluk where Plachimada is located, was declared a ‘notified area’ on 19 November 2005 under the Kerala Ground Water Act. The area was classified “over exploited.” This followed the poisoning and depletion of ground water by Coca Cola. In 2004, the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee on Hazardous Waste ordered Coca Cola to provide piped water to the affected families in Plachimada. Coca Cola never carried out this order. Instead of taking action against Coca Cola, the government declared the Rs.4 crores Plachimada Water Project a year back much to the relief of the people of Plachimada. Coca Cola too must have rejoiced.

A year went by after the government announced the Plachimada Water Project. But the project is not even conceived. If there were no funds available for the project, why was the project announced? To cheat the people? To appease Coca Cola? Once again the government betrays the people.

Till date the government has not taken any step to prosecute Coca Cola for any of their numerous violations of numerous laws. Coca Cola has been allowed to pillage and pollute ground water making huge profits. It destroyed lives, livelihood and ecology. The government allowed the criminal Cola to romp free. Its victims continue to be victimized. Our struggle for water, a source of life, continues….

We, the plachimada Struggle Solidarity Committee demand:

v     Plachimada Water Project must be completed in a time-bound manner to urgently remedy the water-shortage;

v     Take immediate measures to prosecute Coca-Cola for environment contamination and pollution, and water-pilferage;

v     Recover the compensation due from Coca-Cola company for destruction of water, lives, livelihood and destruction of ecology.

Mayilamma, the legendary pillar of Plachimada Struggle, left us to carry the mantle of the struggle on 6 January. We carry forward her legacy… for the right to water and right to live with dignity.

On this day, the 6 January 2010, we march and hold a dharna before the Palakkad District Collectorate at 11 A.M, remembering her.

We request the participation of all in this peoples struggle to survive with dignity.

(invites) Twin Campaigns of REDS

Sorry for cross posting if any

Twin Campaign for Land and for Electoral Reforms

REDS, Dalit Parliament, Dalit Panchayat Movement and Booshakthi Vedike

The year 2010 started in REDS with intensive planning for welcoming the Dalit New Year on
10 January. All Coordinators of the Dalit Panchayat Movement and the Booshakthi Vedike
spent their energies and imagination together to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the
Declaration of Ambedkar Era. It was done on 10 January 2000 in a large gathering of more
than 42000 people in Tumkur. Prakash Ambedkar came to Tumkur to make the declaration.
During the 10th Celebration the Dalit Parliament has decided to push forward to major
agenda of the Ambedkar Yuga.

1. Campaign for 5 acres of Land
REDS, Dalit Panchayat Movement, Dalit Parliament and Booshakthi Vedike have recovered
more than 6855 acres of land during this decade. However, the agenda was to demand
from the government a policy for providing 5 acres of land to each Dalit family living in
rural areas. We had to keep waiting because of the political uncertainty that the State of
Karnataka was facing continuously. But now we have decided to go ahead irrespective of the
political situation in the State.

2. Campaign for Proportionate Electoral System
This Campaign was part of the Ambedkar Yuga declaration. Now the Campaign for Electoral
Reforms in India (CERI) has been formally launched in many States of India. The Campaign
has also been launched in Nepal. The Campaign in India has made great strides. The Dalit
Parliament in Tumkur now has decided to intensify the Campaign for Proportionate Electoral
System in Karnataka along with CERI.

3. Receiving Dalitism
About 800 young Dalit women and men have decided to receive Dalitism as their way of life
in the public functions in their taluks. Dalitism has been the strong foundation of ideology
that has changed the course of Dalit liberation in Tumkur District and now is slowly making
headway into many other Districts of Karnataka. It is our spirituality that lays a strong
foundation for Dalits to draw strength from deep within. Instead of eternally blaming other
for all that happens to us and instead of waiting for an external saviour Dalitism strongly
advocates a basic faith in our own potential for designing the path of our liberation and
development.

The Campaign Programmes

Signature collection has already reached half way to collect one hundred thousand each for
Land and for Electoral Reforms. Ministers,
Instead of having a huge central programme in Tumkur Town or in Bangalore the Dalit
Parliament has decided to decentralize the campaign and spread it out into all the Taluks of
Tumkur District. Each taluk will mobilize a minimum number of 5000 Dalits to pressurize
the Central Government for Electoral Reforms and the State Government for 5 acres of land.
The following are the dates of events that will take place at the taluk level.

11 January 2010 - Pavagada Taluk
20 January 2010 - Madhugiri Taluk
22 January 2010 - Sira Tauk
23 January 2010 - Gubbi Taluk
26 January 2010 - Launch of CERI Manifesto at Civil Society Summit
02 February 2010 - Koratagere Taluk
10 February 2010 - Tumkur Taluk

The other Taluks will follow suit in the course of time.

The programmes in the taluks will have the three major dimensions. Elected Members,
Bureaucrats and Dalit leaders will be special guests to receive the Campaign petitions and
the Signatures. These will be later presented to the District Collector in Tumkur on 10
February. A special delegation will also meet the Governor of Karnataka at a later date to
submit the books that will contain all 200,000 signatures. In all, more than 35000 people
will assemble in this first phase of the Campaign.

We invite all of you to join the Dalits of Karnataka in this major Campaign. You may choose
any of the dates mentioned above to join our people and express your support and
solidarity. Also you can witness the way Dalit people have taken their future into their hands
and have twisted the course of history that was determined for them to become the makers
of their history. This is a history that will provide unlimited space for all people. It is in this
provision of space that Dalits themselves will become leaders and take the authority to
govern this nation, if not in the near future at least in the distant future. But that journey
has started in right earnest and we dont think anyone can stop this march of Dalit
liberation.
