(invites) Pls. sign petition online demanding release of Chhatradhar Mahato

From: Sukla Sen <sukla.sen <at> gmail.com>

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/releasetalk123/
Pls. sign petition online demanding release of Chhatradhar Mahato.

Chhtradhar Mahato has time and again denied he is a Maoist, notwithstanding
claims by the West Bengal government, its supporters and Maoist
propagandists. Independent observers upheld that claim.
More importantly, he was engaged with organising open political dissents. He
went underground only when he was forced to. He also facilitated
participation of Lalgarh villagers in the last parlimentary election in the
teeth of violent Maoist boycott call.
His arrest is an attempt to squeeze out any space for democratic opposition
so keenly being advocated by the brutal state and its apologists and, on the
opposing side, would only gladden the proponents of non-state violence of
matching ferocity.

(invites) 8,9oct:: Open Consultations on Financial Mechanisms: Meeting the Challenges of ICT for Development

Open Consultations on Financial Mechanisms: Meeting the Challenges of ICT for Development (8-9 October, Geneva, Switzerland)

The financing of information and communications technologies (ICTs) for development is an important area to address in the context promoting a more inclusive global information society. Wider diffusion and better use of ICTs can help to achieve more effectively the goals outlined in the Millennium Declaration.

The WSIS Tunis Agenda for the Information Society (November 2005) recognizes the scale of the challenge in bridging the digital divide, which will require adequate and sustainable investments in ICT infrastructure and services, and capacity building, and transfer of technology over many years to come. There is a continuous need to evaluate how existing as well as new financial mechanisms can support greater access and use of ICTs in developing countries. Following a recommendation by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), UNGIS is pleased to announce that Open Consultations on Financial Mechanisms for Meeting the Challenges of ICT for Development will take place from 8-9 October 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Objectives

These Open Consultations will offer a unique opportunity to review progress, share views and discuss new approaches at the national, regional and international level to the financing of ICTs for development. It will give the possibility to develop a better understanding on the need for future actions to respond to the part B of the Tunis Agenda. The meeting is intended to serve as a platform for information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices and building partnerships. To attend the meeting register http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/edrs/ITU-SG/meetings/edrs.registration.form?_eventid=1000042

(invites) GKVK Campaign meeting and Gandhi Jayanti Celebn : Oct 2, 5.30pm BEL Layout [1 Attachment]

[Attachment(s) from vinay sreenivasa included below]

Community Meeting to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti and review 'Save GKVK' Campaign

  Friday, October 2, 2009
6th Block Park BEL Layout, Behind Vidyaranyapura Last Bus Stop

Program: 5.30-6.30 PM  Poster Display Candlelight Ceremony and Tiffin

Issue:
Proposed construction of a major 80 feet link road through Gandhi Krishi Vignyan Kendra (GKVK) campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru in violation of environmental laws and without serious consideration of alternatives.

Why is it of concern?
GKVK with a well-defined campus boundary, demarcated by a compound wall all along its periphery, is a unique habitat with rich bio-diversity providing the much needed green space and shelter to several species of birds, insects, animals, and many rare plants.
Deforestation as a result of uprooting more than 3000 trees would be extremely detrimental to the green cover, potentially affecting ambient temperature, rainfall, and the surrounding water table.
Pollution resulting from the fuel emissions of subsequent traffic on the proposed link road would negatively impact the bio-diversity of the campus as also the health of the neighbourhood children and residents.
The research character of the campus would be adversely affected with the advent of vendors, commuters, establishment of commercial enterprises, and generation of waste material alongside such a major link road through the campus.

Community Demand and Action taken:
Environmental Impact Study (EIS) must be done in compliance of legal requirements for forest areas and a serious evaluation of alternatives must be undertaken in consultation with stakeholders and environmentalists before taking a decision.

Save GKVK March on September 5th, 2009
Memorandum to the Karnataka Governor on September 5th, 2009
Submission for intervention to the Director General of Forests, Ministry of Environment and Forests

Status:
GKVK has transferred the land to BBMP. BBMP has completed felling of trees and has initiated civil works. Court has issued stay order on further felling of trees. Forest department has filed a FIR and is investigating the issue.

Must SAVE this lung space - the GKVK campus - one of the last remaining green cover in North Bengaluru!
