Wired: The Car is not the Future

    http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/05/this-car-is-not-the-future/

The article actually has nothing to do with being carfree but rather
"personal transport modules" or some nonsense like that.

Re: Wired: The Car is not the Future

=v= Here's another reason the car is not the future. Southern
California Edison put up this web page of happy EV greenwash:

      http://www.sce.com/PowerandEnvironment/ElectricTransportation/Energy/

=v= I ransacked the entire site and did not find the 1993 study
that they worked on with the South Coast Air Quality Management
District, the one I've cited on CarFree a few times, projecting
that with additional renewable energy sources, improved energy-
efficiency (which they call "demand-side management"), and by
recharging EVs at night, off-peak, they could remove 19% of the
emissions from cars and 7% of emissions from SUVs.

=v= I found these numbers uninspiring then and still do. Note
that 1993 was *before* the big sales boom in SUVs and could not
take that into account, so these are underprojections.

=v= So what's on the website these days? As is typical for
greenwashing happy talk, they mention whole numbers rather
      than percentages:

      | Looking to the future, a report by TIAX LLC (a collaborative
      | research and development firm) finds that use of electric
      | transportation technologies is expected to reach 1 million
      | by 2020.

Some googling says there are now 32 million cars in California.
So 1 million is 3% of the fleet. Maybe they aren't even talking
about the amount from off-peak charging because they're nowhere
near the amount where it would make a difference.

=v= EVs, NEVs, and PHEVs still aren't saving any planets anytime
soon. Time to put the money into alternatives.
      <_Jym_>

P.S.: Lest we forget, there's no guarantee that motorists
are actually going to recharge off-peak anyway. In fact the
PHEV literature is rife with stuff about "stickin' it to The
Man" by not letting "him" tell you how to use your God-given
electricity. We can fully expect on-peak recharging to continue
until increased demand drives electrical costs up to match that
of gasoline, which these pseudo-rebels will of course also blame
      on "The Man."

The car computer that makes speeding history

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1180194/The-car-makes-speeding-history.html

"A sophisticated in-car computer could soon make it impossible for
      motorists to speed.

The system detects the speed limit and automatically slows the car if it
      is being driven too quickly."

Several years ago I wrote an April Fool's joke, describing a similar
      system, for a weekly newspaper:
      http://indynews.ca/archives/news/news2004/March/SSI033104.html

I thought it sounded pretty far-fetched (just too reasonable to be
true!) but some readers took it very seriously and were either pleased
      or outraged.

Gee, I you all really want to quit the bicycle movement.....

Goosh guys! What has happen to the bicycle, pedestrian and slow looking vehicle (as opposed to the fast and dangeous, poluting vehicle ect ect...)? Well, shucks. I have not given up and neither have the guys in Florida and, of course, a few over their too---- OBVIOUSLY.... Still, If your going to stop being an activist their are certain steps one must take to keep the repercussion of a life style chance from overcomming the psychie. That is- if your going to change your life-style, one needs to take certain actions. I remember when me and a buch of guys got put into the "booby hatch" for something or other (Many psychiatrists make mistakes about radicals all the time....typically this time they thought I was wrong about disappearing stuff, but that is,well, another war story.) and I quite putting out information all over about the way things were changing. Well, after about a week of this more relaxed attitude something terrible happen. A man came into my home and with a gun demanded money and jewlry. He also went to my neighbos house and demanded so much we almost poopin in our pants. He got the neighbors new truck, left and let us live. Having been shocked I got deep into religous things and metaphysics and to make a long story short, I realized that I went from one way of life straight over to another way of life without "busting the ghosts" so-to speak, of the old way. In my case, the old carma and reprercussive ways from the way I used to act enacted a rather complicated, but explainable need for me to learn to alter life styles in a gradual mannor. Sure, I may sound like I this time I REALLY NEED to go to the bobby hatch, (or you think I'm still IN THE BOOBY HATCH. HEHE), but if you really want to give up, bust the ghosts, or spread a whole lot of fearlessness around that makes others feel fearless and the old way will not come back upon you so vigorously. I really need to warn you, and yes, it sounds religous, but it is also psychological. Thanks.
P.S. If you still want to be activer and need power, join us BOX CLUB
guys and just take a look at this stuff we do to keep up the good fight of faith. Im John T. Schiffer and one can look under key words: Floaters; Anomalies to Photograph. :O), I you can't beat them, the cars WILL make you LIKE them. No freegy Geeky in Higher Power.

      A Poem

      Hello,

This group might appreciate a poem (below) I recently wrote on roads and
cars. Concepts: industrial vs. organic, masculine vs. feminine.

If you have comments, I would appreciate a personal email.

Also, if you haven't yet discovered the blog How We
      Drive<http://www.howwedrive.com/>,
I highly recommend you look into it.

      Christa
      San Diego, CA

      *Roads*

      Inverted walls
      Trapped in asphalt
      Left staring at
      White and yellow

      Tunnels never ending

      Music streaming, screaming
      Moving from the grave
      Robots clinging, clanking
      Singing for the wind

      Stables not for horses
      Cages not for birds

      Forests breathing
      Rivers running
      Freeways burning

      Re: A Poem

Christa, thank you for sharing the link of the web site. I am afraid I
failed Poetry Appreciation class in high school, so the art is lost on
me, but the opening video on the web site had me catatonic with
      laughter!
