Some people keep score very seriously, others less seriously and some
hardly at all. Only the saintly don't.

There is also evidence of something of a male/female split. Those of
the former persuasion tend to include the size of the favour in the
score, so one big favour is worth several smaller ones. Those of the
latter persuasion tend not to be concerned by the size of the favour
but only the frequency.

Don't know that *people* keep score, but I do know that I offer help
all the time, freely, like it seems you do, and that whenever I ask
for help I get loads of it. Right now I'm building a 16ft. long
kayak (http://clcboats.com - Mill Creek 16.5), and whatever I need in
tools, workspace, discounts on materials, and technical assistance
has just fallen into my lap.

I think the universe keeps score, and I think people can tune into it
if they listen.

ps - Riin, I only have two real friendships that've lasted ca. twenty
years, and they take quite a bit of ongoing maintenance. There were
many others along the way where personal evolution diverged us. It
*does* hurt, but I think you're looking at it pretty clearly. Hugs!!

Re: "Karma" was: Article on carless family

Thanks to everyone for your comments and hugs, on list and off. It's
been some food for thought.

I do believe in karma in a sense. I don't know if it's the same way
that other people believe in karma. I think if you're nice, people
are more likely to be nice to you. If you're not nice, people aren't
as likely to be nice to you. That's human nature, I think. If
someone's nice to you, you'll like that person.

That's probably somewhat related to the keeping track of favors
thing. But geez, I'd go insane if I tried to remember who had done
me favors and how many. I just think of some people as nice people
and some people as less nice and some people as really not very nice
and some people drive me nuts and I try to avoid them. But the nice
people might never have done me any favors at all. They might just
be friendly and on the same wavelength as me so whenever we talk, I
feel good. Only liking people who will do something for me seems
kind of...well, greedy.

I think I'm a nice person, but I suppose probably everyone thinks
that about themselves. I know I have snapped at people at times when
my depression was really bad. And I'm not friendly in an outgoing
sense. I don't have it in me to be mean though. I try to be nice.

The problem is even if you're nice sometimes the universe still just
comes along and slaps you in the face.

I signed up for a meditation workshop. Maybe that'll help.

Hi Riin,

Sorry about your friend. It's likely that your two had grown apart
over the years and she was looking for an excuse. I had a parting of
the ways with someone whom I thought was my best friend, and it was
very upsetting.

Anyway, I noticed you left the feminist group. Was anything wrong?

Oops

Neglect that last message. I meant to send it just to Riin. I
deleted it off the site, but if people get individual e-mails, I can't
do anything about that.

TF: I recently weeded out a friend of that variety in _two_ _minutes_
instead of 27 years, proving to myself the viability of a plan that
I'd developed specifically for weeding out that variety.

This was a 47-year-old widow who happened to be the first person that
I contacted on one of those internet meat-racks. She was extremely
nice on e-mail for a few weeks and seemed to be on my wavelength
about things, and then she finally proposed that our first date
consist of me coming to her place, in Scranton 20 miles away from me,
to help her go through her late husband's things in preparation for a
yard sale. I said okay, and that when she meets me at a McDonald's in
her neck of the woods to give me directions the rest of the way to

=v= Given the first assumption, a car's steering wheel is a
worse deal than a bicycle. Yeesh! Plus, if "greener" is the
concern, the pollution associated with specific materials is
something to look at. A magazine I wrote for looked at the
toxic release inventories for bicycle factories in the U.S.
(such data is unavailable for e.g. China) and it was seriously
all about the materials, chrome being the worst. There's much
more chrome in a car, of course.

=v= The second assumption is absurd. I can only imagine that
it's based on the scenario of the original buyers of bikes
just letting them languish in the garage, but that says nothing
of the bikes' ultimate fates. Years ago, as recounted in his
best-selling book _Design_for_the_Real_World_, Victor Papanek
worked on a project to take used bicycles and convert them into
generators and pumps. He learned in the course of this project
that bicycles are considered too valuable by most of the world
to be converted into anything. They had to rethink the project
to use existing bicycles as generators.

=v= Bikes last a long time, much longer than cars. Maybe too
many of them start out as toys that are left gathering dust, but
they don't just vanish into thin air after that. Eventually
they'll get used.

Often for years after they are left on the curb as trash. Most bikes
are never ridden after their tires go flat, it seems.
