Much shorter, and in some ways much better than LotR
(which I never saw). 5 min long or so. (Spoilage
warning: don't read the next sentence!) Well-stuffed
superheroes, a damsel in distress, a villainous
car-driver, and the requisite car-bashing. And I was
able to dowload it in a short time even over a modem
connection!

why carfree

i have a very hard time explaining why i choose to be carfree to
people. it seems to be just in me, what i believe in, the lifestyle
i choose. it's difficult for me to persuade or even explain this. i
talk about the environment and freedoms and stress, but those
arguments never phase people blinded by the need to drive and the
need for everything to be convienient and immediate. (esp. in the
motor city - where i'm currently living)
so i'm just looking for some help - websites, arguments, etc - to
help me explain to people a little better about being carfree.
thanks
Virginia

I humbly offer

where there are many links to other folks' sites. I'm behind on
error corrections and link updates, but most of them should be
OK.

My reasons for maintaining a carfree existence can be enumerated ad
nauseam on the basis of internal versus external costs. For those
interested, a cogent explanation of price and internal/external
costs is presented in Garrett Hardin's _EXPLORING NEW ETHICS FOR
SURVIVAL_ but most people whom I encounter want more concrete
reasons for my disdain of the auto culture. I'm sure that many on
this list can provide additional reasons. Here is just one of my
(to me) nontrivial reasons:

In Tucson, one advantage to remain carfree is that I'm,
essentially, panhandler-free. While on my bike, I've had brief
cordial conversations with (unfortunately) ubiquitous panhandlers
while waiting for traffic lights to change. Never, have I been
asked for a contribution.

Unfortunately, I assumed the role of taxi driver (in my parents'
car) for a few elderly people last week. Upon letting my riders off

De, I love your lunchbox analogy. :) I can just see someone lugging

De and Riin have offered a few ones, Ken Kifer's bike pages offer
some more http://www.kenkifer.com . Ultimately, you will have to draw
from these but most importantly from your life to find plausible
explanations. For instance:

- some people can't drive or are nervous wrecks when driving a car;
- some people can't afford driving their own car (doesn't seem to be
your case);
- some people prefer to spend their money elsewhere: for instance
paying for a trip to a far-away place instead of mere gasoline,
getting more jewelry, retiring early, working less hours per week, or
at a more interesting but less lucrative work, or...;
- some people do that for the environment;
- some people actually save time (even in the immediate sense) by not
using or not having a car;

Why we are car-free--for us, choosing something better

We understand according to the AAA statistics that it costs around $6,000 a year to own and operate a motor
vehicle.

We gave up our family car in August 2002. In October 2003, we did a family trip to England and North Wales. We
spent more than we ever had before.

Ironically, when I totaled it all up, it came to around $6,000.

I wrote up a description of our trip complete with photos. If you're interested, you can find it here:

Riin,

I've been reading your site. Looks great. I particularly like your rant on "Girls Afraid to Sweat..."

I'll be sharing that with my daughter.
