Someone mentioned it on the urbancyclist-uk list, so any UK members may
have come from there.

You see, being a member of this list has already paid off, I have been looking
for the Touring List for ages. Never thought to ask about it here, well you
live and learn.

I found it in one of the weekly newsletters from RailWatch - a very good source
on cheap rail ticket offers (and other web-based rail information) in the UK.

Thanks and more

re: the "California left turn" - I probably should have specified that the left turn problem
is almost always on a left turn arrow signal (even cars may not turn left unless the arrow is
green, unlike a standard signal light). I was informed by a miraculously lenient law
enforcement official (I usually consider them the gestapo around here but this guy cut me
some slack) that I would be ticketed unless I used the pedestrian walkways.

Anyway, I guess I could end up a test case whether I wanted to or not! Yikes! What I will
do is consult the city about the signal problems and I'll keep you all updated on what I discover.

I very much appreciate the suggestions thus far. This is a good list.

re: how'd I find the list - I found it while clicking on a link from a fascinating
paper on Community Based Economics in the Environmentalism:Red-Green list. I was excited to
find a car-free area.

As one writer signed off, "ride on," ditto.

Fwd: Re: Welcome to CarFree

This great intro was sent to me instead of the list so I am forwarding
it on. I agree with the comments about the need for speed. Since i got
rid of the truck I can feel myself slowing down to a more natural pace.
We are getting many new members please introduce yourselfs.

#83/Cpage/california turn still

Hey C - in your last writing you mentioned the gestapo told you to use
the pedestrian cross walk. This is a totally misinformed officer.
Bicycles are legal vehicles and are entitled to the roadway. Many police
officers are ignorant to the laws pertaining to bicycles. They still
think the bicycle is a toy. If you have the energy, consult with your
local DOT official who is involved with pedestrian/transportation
issues. Know the laws and follow them. You will be better off. One day
my wife pam and I stood up to an officer who said we shouldn't be riding
on the bridge at this time of day because of the high traffic. It was
heated for awhile, but the next day this officer called us and
acknowledged we were right, BUT he still would not do it? Ride
on..........

Initiative for fewer cars

The Swiss Initiative "Umverkehr" (see CarFree Digest No. 53) aims to reduce
car travel in Switzerland by 50% within 10 years. We vote on this issue on
March 12th. If you have Swiss friends, please urge them to vote YES.

The UmVerkehr web site now has a large section in English. See:

http://www.umverkehr.ch

BTW, car usage also has a lot to do with exerting power over others. At the
recent World Economic Forum in Davos, a small mountain town were everything
is within walking distance, participants were allowed to drive around in
large black limousines and park everywhere even where it is usually
forbidden, whereas NGO demonstrators were forbidden their constitutional
right to demonstrate. Unfortunately this resulted in some violence; several
people were injured, several cars damaged, and the local MacDonalds had its
windows demolished.

random acts of violence

I fell we can pretty well state the advent of the car led to the decline
of neighborhoods. Can we extend the thinking and say that the car is
responsbile for the RAV we are seing today.
I for one find that since I went carfree I know many more people in the
neighborhood. And you are less likely to RAV those whom you know.
