WCN update

Dear carfree choosers,

We'd like to remind you that the following events are just around the corner:

1. Towards Carfree Cities X Conference, Guadalajara, Mexico: 5-9 September 2011.

This year's theme is Cities for the People by the People. Registration (fees from 35 USD) and speaker information can be found at http://carfree.mx/mx/?tag=english.

2. World Carfree Day: 22 September 2011.

We need your help to promote WCD in your part of the world - we want to help people find out about what's happening as well as providing useful answers to the many media enquiries we receive every year about what, where, who, how many, etc...

Please add your local events to our wiki at http://editthis.info/wcd/World_Carfree_Day_2011

===

Finally, just a reminder that the World Carfree News monthly bulletin relaunched with graphics earlier this year and is now available in six languages thanks to our loyal volunteers.
You can sign up and read older editions here. If you like what you see, why not make a donation to WCN or our host Riseup?

Viele Grüße aus Deutschland,

Simon.

It's time for action

The time to move towards carfree cities has come. We must depart from cities that neglect us towards cities that belong to us. Step by step moving onto the right direction. We need to collectively realise that in order to have a better future we need not to build more roads, but to transform our mindsets. It's time to move on.

The Towards Carfree Cities Conference is a gathering that brings people from all over the world, who come along to share ideas, work and examples of what they have been developing in their countries to make our cities a better place to live in. It's an annual event and it takes place for the second occasion in Latin America. It's supported and created by the World Carfree Network through local organizations -in this case Ciudad Para Todos and GDL en Bici.

Alternatives to make your daily commute a colective issue of public interest.

The decision making on topics of urban mobility and urban planning.

Experiences of citizens from around the world, that have made positive changes in their environment.

A letter of sustainable commuting and transportation to move on around the World.

World Car Free Network promotes alternatives to the planning of cities based on cars. If you do not want to keep receiving this information to think in better cities, click on the "Safe unsubscribe" button.

September - A Monthly Newsletter From BEN

Dear Fellow Cycling Enthusiast,

September is nearly here and the staff at BEN has been busy! Along with launching our 2011 Red Hill Charity Challenge website and our new look facebook page we have also received a container of over 300 bikes from our friends at Re-Cycle. These bikes will be distributed among our BEC's and various projects across the Western Cape to further our mission. For more details about what we do and how we do it, please read on.

With best wishes from,

The BEN Team

BEN Mission Statement

BEN is the Bicycling Empowerment Network. We are an NPO promoting the use of the bicycle. This is achieved mainly through our bicycle workshops also known as Bicycling Empowerment Centres or BEC's. BEN also imports used bicycles for distribution to those in need of transportation as well as providing cycling safety training at schools and workplaces.

By promoting the bicycle in all its forms we feel we can ease poverty, providing low cost transport and improving health.

Out and about with BEN
  • BEN was thrilled with the arrival of a shipment of 317 bikes from Re-Cycle arriving at our BEN office on Friday the 19th of August. Among the kindly donated bicycles were 4 gems from the school children at St. Fergus Primary in Scotland. These have been given out with a small 'Bicycle Passport' so that the school children can track where the bikes go, who receives them and how the bikes donated can change lives. A big thank you also to Pedal Power Association for their financial assistance!

  • Our Outreach Manager, Trevor Knowlden, was asked by the South African Navy to assist with a bicycle training program for the newly formed Western Province Military Cycling Club. It was a great success!

  • Another BEN success story is that of Kenneth. Kenneth wrote to the team at BEN recently to ask for our help. He is a single father to a 10 year old boy and wished to have a bike of his own to help him in his search for work, to keep him fit and to take his son to school. His heartfelt letter touched us all here at BEN and we were only too happy to help him on his way. BEN, with the help of a kind sponsor, donated the bicycle to Kenneth and wish him all the very best!

  • The website for our annual fundraiser, the Red Hill Charity Challenge, is up and running. 2011 is set to be a big one so be sure to get your entries in for the event which is to be held on Sunday the 13th of November. Please visit the website for further details.
BEN has a long waiting list of people that are desperate for a bicycle. If you would like to donate a used bicycle please contact us or check out our donation page on the website.

Happy pedalling!
