US: billions of dollars for auto industry?

Hi all,

In the USA right now, "Democrats are pressing hard to include a
multibillion-dollar bailout for faltering automakers" as one news
source has it. See:

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/081112/financial_meltdown.html?.v=58
http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/agbpgvcbma84

There could potentially be billions of dollars that are given or lent
to the auto industry, to help it through rough times. Especially House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is aggressively pursuing this. Is anyone else
following this? Does anyone know of US environmental groups or other
pressure groups that are voicing their opposition to this?

Regards,

Justin

For that matter, the EU is also considering to channel 40 billion euro
as a loan to the car makers through the European Investment Bank.
EU car makers are saying that if the US car makers get it, EU car makers
should get it too.
The Czech Presidency is against subsidies for the car makers... the
Czech Presidency is saying the EU should just drop the whole cars and
CO2 regulation.

Re: US: billions of dollars for auto industry?

In Brazil, the federal government announced a R$ 4 billion (around U$ 2 billion) to car makers. The  Sao Paulo state government anounced another R$ 4 billion support.

Note: since mid-2007, the automakers are breaking all the historical records in Brazil concerning production and car-selling.

As a joke, this R$ 8 billion can be considered here as a prize for the excelent performance of the industry.

disgruntled about it.

=v= So far I haven't seen any enviro group step up to the plate
to oppose this auto industry bailout. Credo, however, has just
recently set up a web page to email your one's Congressional
representative (e.g. Pelosi) to demand support for Harry Waxman
rather than a climate change-denier from General Motors, and
it suggests not bailing out the auto industry. You can add
your own words about not bailing out the auto industry (I did).

Subject: We need real solutions to fight climate change.

Dear Friend,

Global climate change is perhaps the greatest challenge of our
generation. What we do (or don't do) affects not only our
nation, but the world. You might thank that, with a new
president poised to take office, we're in a great position to
take serious action to address climate change. Unfortunately, a
grizzled legislator named John Dingell, known as the
"Congressman from General Motors," is standing in our way.

The most important pieces of legislation addressing climate
change must pass through the House Energy and Commerce
Committee. As chair of that committee, Congressman Dingell has
exerted his power time and again to kill bills that could roll
back global warming. Dingell has lined his campaign war chest
with millions of dollars of contributions from electric, oil and
coal companies. His wife (and potential successor to his
Congressional seat) is a senior executive at General
Motors. What's more, until recently, he wouldn't even admit that
climate change was a real threat.

I just signed a petition calling on my member of Congress to
vote for Congressman Henry Waxman (a staunch environmentalist)
to replace Dingell as the Energy and Commerce Chair -- I hope
you will too.

Please have a look and take action.

urgent request for "car quiz" or data sheet

Hi all,

I have an urgent request from the ZöFi (Hungarian Young Greens). If
you respond to this, can you include Orsi (in the cc)?

We're putting together a collection of games for 14-18 olds and we'd
like to sneak in a test about cars vs other means of transport. Do you
have anything that is not longer than 1 page, contains some surprising
(maybe even shocking) data about cars (number of, pollution, most
popular reasons for buying, etc) and other means of transport,
anything that would interest our target group and could inspire some
discussion afterwards? A link to a useful homepage is also good.
Please provide the exact source since it will go into printing.

Unfortunately, it is very urgent, we need the stuff today (that's
Friday). So if the time's too short, that's our fault and should be
our problem, not yours :)

But thanks a lot if you can help.

Cheers,
Orsi

Here with no attachments:

Hi, the WCN page has a section on stats which should be useful. I've
also compiled some info in the training document on public awareness
available from www.sutp.org , box 6 (some of it is from WCN). Also there
is a great doc called "10 myths about transport" or something which is
really wonderful. I'll send these in a separate email to Orsi.

Best regards,

Carlos.

The German VCD has a mobility education guide with some examples of
possible actions, e.g. a mobility rally
see (especially if you can read german)

especially p. 16 onwards

Re: US: billions of dollars for auto industry?

Hello all,

Thanks Jym for the petition you sent. I just found a different petition specifically against the auto industry bail-out. Take a look here and sign (and you can leave your own comments there too)

http://dontgomovement.com/no-auto-industry-bailouts/

This was after I found a general no-bail out on the avaaz website, which usually has lots of good petitions. In fact, I even wrote them and asked if they could include "no auto bail-out" wording in their petition.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_public_rescue/

Jeroen, do you have any idea of pressure regarding this in Europe? I also don't fully understand what you wrote below:

"The Czech Presidency is against subsidies for the car makers... the
Czech Presidency is saying the EU should just drop the whole cars and
CO2 regulation."

So what is the Czech presidency saying? the EU should drop cars AND also drop CO2 regulation? And what do you mean by whole cars?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: billions of dollars for auto industry?

Hi all.

Please could all interested individuals continue this discussion off-list?  If there is a concrete project proposal, such as writing a letter of protest on behalf of WCN, then please make that clear and feel free to recruit contributors via the list.

This method was effective in producing a WCN response to the EU's Urban Mobility Green Paper earlier this year.

Many thanks,

Simon.
