[Sansevierias] Blooming

Hello All,

You thought I had something special in bloom, didn't you!?! Lots in bloom at the house, just no Sansevieria. <<<frown>>>

No, this is a question about getting Sansevieria to bloom.

Is there any *special* treatment that anyone has found that gets them to bloom? In Chahinian's book (yes,
I've been reading, a lot), he mentions the "double" dry season and that his do not regularly bloom on
account of some rain during the winter in Florida. Is cold a factor? I have a full supply of that. I can do
drought very well too.

So let's hear it. Even anecdotal ideas can prove to be valuable. How do YOU get them to bloom?

There must be a reason to flower.

Now my 3 different cylindricas is in flower. Appearantly something made them do this. But what??

Some trifs is also flowering. But no other sans.

Re: [Sansevierias] Blooming

I find for mine personally, that like Schlumbergeras, a summer out of doors usually initiates flowering both in spring when first put out and in late fall when brought back in. Indoors they get no special treatment, just plunked in front of whatever window I think of and there they sit for the entire winter , occasionally fed with Monty's Joy Juice...

Re: [Sansevierias] Blooming

Michael,
Remember, each sansevieria growth, or clump, blooms only once whereupon it puts its energy into vegetative growth. So, if they have already bloomed they won't bloom again. Some other species withhold their flowers for years - or so it seems. I have never had a species with capitate flowers bloom for me here in Tennessee, and I've had them for over a decade.
I never heard that a cold or a dry period might be a factor in flowering; but, they certainly like sunlight and warmth. Give your plants the executive treatment in the summer with light shade, water and fertilizer and you will see results. Trifasciatas seem to be the easiest to flower.

Re: [Sansevierias] Blooming

Exactly.  There must be a reason.  My thought is that the conditions are simply *correct* for the plant to bloom.  In general, plants will bloom as a matter of two courses, one is great growing conditions that are conducive to reproduction.  The second is poor growing conditions that cause the plant to "want" to reproduce before it dies.  Sometimes, stressors combine with good growing conditions and even better reproduction results.

What is that stress, and what are the environmental conditions?  Do we look to the native habitat?  Is there already a formula?

Re: [Sansevierias] Blooming

I must say, I've more than once neglected my hallii over the last twelve years.  To prove a point, it has never flowered.

Being more attentive to summer care these past few years, I've seen reasonable growth, but alas, no blooms.  The masoniana a friend gave me is the best shot, perhaps.  It's in a five gallon pot with a dozen leaves.  Maybe this spring.

As Kyle mentioned, I too plunk them in a window and hope for the best.  The windows are better in my home now than every before.

Michael,
Remember, each sansevieria growth, or clump, blooms only once whereupon it puts its energy into vegetative growth.

Hello All,

You thought I had something special in bloom, didn't you!?!  Lots in bloom at the house, just no Sansevieria.  <<<frown>>>

No, this is a question about getting Sansevieria to bloom.

Is there any *special* treatment that anyone has found that gets them to bloom?  In Chahinian's book (yes, I've been reading, a lot), he mentions the "double" dry season and that his do not regularly bloom on account of some rain during the winter in Florida.  Is cold a factor?  I have a full supply of that.  I can do drought very well too.

So let's hear it.  Even anecdotal ideas can prove to be valuable.  How do YOU get them to bloom?

Re: [Sansevierias] Blooming

Some friend gave an advice.
Let it grow healthy and mature enough.....then let it dry.... Never watering for some periode.... It will survive .... by blooming, ...... No gurantee by sometimes it works......

Or let it grow in a small contanier. Let it grow untill over size or grow outside the container and roots fullfill the container. Sometimes it works

I've tried but not enough samples to make a conclusion. But some plants have bloomed in my place / tropical country .

Hi and welcome back Karen.
Do you know Mike Phillips of Bow, London he has a very large collection though I think he has had to trim it down a bit due to lack of room. If you don't know him I can out you in touch and your collection will double or more. Most of his plants are documented.

Hello Sans Fans,

I guess I'm a voice from the distant past now. Sorry I've been away for so long. Long story short, health issues, both mine and my laptop . Now looking for a new desktop, so I'll have a backup machine.  Very early last year I picked up a nasty case of MRSA and was very, very ill for a long time, stuck at Mom's place in London, without a computer. No sooner was I recovered than my Mom, who will be 91 in May,  suddenly found she was going to have to enter a nursing home. Getting her through that just ate up so much time. I now manage her affairs as well as my own. Though truly, I don't mind it, because I adore her.  But enough on that... I have recently acquired some new Sans, the first new ones for a long time for me.

One S.T. Laurentii Silver, which is lovely,  3 Bantel's Sensations that were hiding in a bunch of ordinary no name pots, so far doing well a few feet from my south window.  And one with the name Galaxy, which I'd not seen before. Skinny leaves, not very thick either, none more than a foot long, quite dark green with darker banding.  I see one or two bits of rhizomes atop the soil, one plant looks like it might be growing 'legs', as its growing point is a few inches up from pot level.  It was a well filled 10"  basket, but one plant rather quickly had all it's leaves go dry and brown within a week of bringing it home. Its roots seem to be alive and healthy, but some of the other plants are also showing quite a bit of browning one some of their leaf tips.  Quite possible that it may have been badly chilled when it came home with me, it seems to be mostly one side of the pot.  It didn't seem to be dried out, but does seem quite potbound, so perhaps it wants  some root room, or a faster draining potting mix ? Unless someone tells me it may send out runners like, say, Ballyi can and make a nice basket display with time, I'd rather put it in a regular pot.  Advice ?

Also found a couple of what I think are Futura types, very inexpensive, that I took simply because they were so oddly coloured next to their nondescript cousins. A few leaves are almost entirely coloured  greenish yellow, not much in the way of marking or stripes, just solid colour.  Only had 'em for a week or two, not sure how they'll grow on, but I have a new camera on order, which ought to be here any day now, so I'll try posting some pics when it comes.

So good to see Norma and Hermine's names, along with many others that I have missed talking with so much. I know I'm still going to be very short on time now Mom's in the home, but I'll try to stay in touch as best I can.  Tonight I just can't sleep, so I thought, why not say hi ?

Most annoyingly, I will soon have to switch ISPs, which will mean a new email addy.  Hope changing it won't be too difficult for this group and so many others I'll have to change. I should probably have set up a Gmail account long ago so it wouldn't matter if the ISP changed, eh?

But Spring is around the corner, it was 8, Celsius here the other day, quite balmy really. Then it snowed a bit.. crazy weather.

Take care all,

Karen

Some friend gave an advice.
Let it grow healthy and mature enough.....then let it dry.... Never watering for some periode.... It will survive .... by blooming, ...... No gurantee by sometimes it works......

Or let it grow in a small contanier. Let it grow untill over size or grow outside the container and roots fullfill the container. Sometimes it works

I've tried but not enough samples to make a conclusion. But some plants have bloomed in my place / tropical country .
