what I really meant

in terms of sheer numbers of dead plants, I lost a great deal, but I
still have a larger collection of rare things than I did ten years
ago when i started rebuilding the collection. I got the
irreplaceables indoors. what I lost was the multiples I was going to
use for mail order. I will rebuild and am pleased to report I can
make a small reliably heated enclosed greenhouse for the GEMS.
nurseries hereabouts report losses of stock between 40 AND 60 percent.
At first I was something between numb, hysterical and guilt ridden,
but now I am OK. I believe I am going to embark on collecting
heirloom roses and carnivorous plants, by the way.

Re: So when is it safe to ship???

--- Vicky,
I refuse to send San.until Aptil 1. I wouldn't want to cause some
crying/or swearing, no grrrr! I lost about 1/3 of my plants, but not
my Sansevieria. Dale came over today, and he helped me with gettiing
my pictures up and running again, and of course we had lunch out, he
refuses to eat my cooking. LOL Norma

Re: what I really meant

I don't blame you, Herm. I personally am TIRED of struggling to keep things warm enough or cool enough...I've had more stress over my plants health than my own this past year.....

I'm glad you are feeling better and somewhat over the shock. NOONE DIED, as they say.

well, it has been harder in Southern California that in was in Boston. in boston I knew I had to create an artificial climate and so I did that, i made something like a huge growth chamber, and weather be damned, nothing suffered. Here we have the expectation every ten years for things to be OK, with a sucker punch about once a decade. so for all the years I did not need a growth chamber, I got away with it. I am now going to throw myself into some collecting of things I had denied myself all these years because I was FULL UP on what I could handle, and it happens that some of this stuff is winter hardy here.

Nobody died, but it was still hard on the heart, and maybe just a bit on the ego.

the ego suffers too.

tough, yes. I ran out of strength and time to drag more plants indoors, also space for them in a place where there IS NO SPACE.

Re: what I really meant

Tough, especially when you spent years obtaining, propagating, and/or
nurturing plants and watching them develop into beauties with time and TLC,
only to see them damaged overnight.

Then again, I had to travel to New Orleans area for air monitoring shortly
after Katrina last year. I saw entire neighborhoods which had been
destroyed. Cars and boats on roofs of destroyed homes which had been in
nicer neighborhoods a month before. There is always worst, and always much
to be thankful for. -Chris
