Re: What is this?

Norma,

No one knows if 'Minnie' is a seperate species or if it is just a clone of sansevieria ballyi. Juan does not make a clear case in his book. I think this is a case where we will have to wait until the taxonomists have a look at the plant and make their determination if it is a clone or new species.

Smoley offers one #1268l as ballyi.
Is yours like ballyi or like Mark's 'M innie'?

This is something i got directly from Juan several years ago. It was
supposed to be francisii which he published....from kenya i believe. But
i'm
not sure this is actually that one.

Anyone have an idea what it might be.

Grown in a lot of sun, in a 4 inch pot....these are really tiny plants
which will be blooming again soon . They develop long thin rhizomes
shooting
out in every direction, which have new plants that in-turn send out more
"runners" etc., all w/ long roots hanging down. Very colorful and tough.

thanks!

Re: What is this?

Brookside plant doesn't look like my plant at all,  It looks more like my S. humbertiana, =S. volkensii,  I have several plants that look like the  Brookside's plant, and to make matters worse it seems as if intermedia may be also a synomym.  Then I have another plant that is called intermedia, which doesn't look like any of the above.  ?  ? ? So what gives,   Joe, the type in Juan's book I just mailed out to you about 4:00 this afternoon.
I'm using Juan's new book and the the new Handbook of Suculent plants.  Back to the books again tonight to make sure I'm reading them both correctly.
Yeaaa, Joe got both picrtures, mine doesn't look anything like the Brookside plant.  Now to make this naming thing  horrible.  S. phillipsiae synomis with S. hargesia, Somalia  F/C Lav. 1970  Norma

PS. ALAN BUTLER  wanted this plant  when he was here,  and I still have a label on the plant with his name on it.  I not allowed to send it.  Norma

Norma,

The regular ballyi leaves are longer and 'Minnie's compact. A real miniature.

I was looking for pictures on the net and thought I'd look at Brookside since
their pictures are so much nicer than GlassHouseW. They list 11 DIFFERENT
ballyi. The ultimate tease. Yes, they've got them, but we can't have them!

Here's their picture of the type and Juan's 'minnie' again from the book,
below.

Re: What is this?

I gave  Michael his "Minnie" .  Mine is like the picture in Juan's book.  A taxonomists will need to get a DNA to prove it one way or the other.  I think Smoley is confused, or where he obtained it is confused.  My ballyi I have had it for 30+ years, so I don't which name came first.  It is different that all the previous names that I mentiioned.  I'm going by what Len Newton calls it.  He is from Africa, is a scientist, and I trust him.   Norma

I am glad juan got da money. in my opinion the price of this plant is
INSANE and yes, i have spent over a thousand for a single plant, and
MUCH over a thousand for a single dog, but this is in the realm of the INSANE.
and i have a feeling Juan knows this.
