Re: Wangala Station

Thanks much to Mike L, Michael B, and Herm and anyone else I missed for your input on 'Wangala'.  It was especially interesting about this Sans being originally 'Bally 12671', (vs Bally 12681 as the type) with apparently slightly different markings.  In any case, it appears that the Sans Al is offering as 'Wangala Station' is another Sans entirely, since he says it's a form of suffruticosa.  Perhaps he's 'tuned in to our station' and will investigate.  Anyone in contact with him regularly that could notify him of the error before he sells it as a suffruticosa type?    I used to be, but not in a few years.

If 'Wangala' is truly slightly different than ballyi, then it should be S. ballyi v. 'Wangala Station', or as Herm says S. ballyi f. 'Wangala Station'.
I've never been to Alan's Brookside site, does he have all those forms of ballyi for sale??

I am getting a splitting headache from all this taxonomy splitting. There really are a finite number of Species Sansevierias, unlike Euphorbia, and we do not have go off making up wee names for every variant. I admit it is at first tempting, i used to see real difference in a fern called Davalia fijiensis because they were all slightly different but recognizably so from different places, but alas. had a talk with dr holtuum and he laid some home truths on me which is that they vary from colony to colony but it is not a BIG DEAL.

Russ, I copied the following from Brookside Nursery's web page.  Near the end they describe Wangala Sta. as a form of Ballyi.
Mike
Sansevieria ballyi  Also known as S. humbertiana. Small rosettes of pointed banded leaves producing new growths on runners. Will form a nice group.

Sansevieria ballyi  Bally 12671 Form with very clear markings

Sansevieria ballyi  Bally 12681 type plant

Sansevieria ballyi  Compact form from Berlin Botanic Gardens

Sansevieria ballyi  Classen 19 Rather more upright, thicker leaves

Sansevieria ballyi  Classen 56 Very fine leaves

Sansevieria ballyi  A form collected at Voi, Kenya. Compact.

Sansevieria ballyi  R56 L.Leach, Mombassa, Kenya, leaves are paler and speckled white.

Sansevieria ballyi  A form with rather long stolons collected by Morgenstern

Sansevieria ballyi  PF 1020 Form with rather longer stems and very rough leaves

Sansevieria ballyi  Form from Wangala Station. Leaves are longer.

Sansevieria ballyi  Wide leaf form

I'm glad to see our friend Al in the United Kingdom selling Sans on Ebay.  Looks like some nice ones, check it out.

Al is offering S. 'Wangala Station' and shows a picture, saying it is a suffruticosa type..  My plant of 'Wangala Station' with location data is the much smaller ballyi.  Does anyone else ON THIS GROUP have this plant that could comment??

Russ,

I saw those plants this morning, and yes, they are very nice. Sure do wish they were here though instead of across the pond:)

Re: Wangala Station

Herm, I would agree that Sans with such small differences should not have a name.  But since this particular Sans already has one in 'Wangala Station'... and it is quite an old name, I felt it should retain it as a form.  It simply designates a plant from a collection location different from the type, and happens to be slightly different.  But in essence,
I strongly agree with you.

I privately keep such commemorative names, including who collected it with wee notes. it is part of the provenance but of no hort. standing TO ME. more like a sentimental reminder.

Funny Russ, I was going to post and tell Hermine I was wrong. That variegated hallii is stunning looking. I take back my comment that I don't like variegates. If anyone wants to buy that hallii for me and send it, I won't refuse. Ha!

More Sans from Juan on Ebay right now.  A spectacular
variegated hallii is among them, as well as varieg senegambica, masoniana, and some others.

I found a yellow bantels at a wholesale nursery whose name I no longer remember, I called it Bantel's Golden Sensation and gave the firstborn to Dave Grigsby. it was Gorgeous. I no longer have it, alas, but i had hoped it would surface. it was one of the  plants which was just not for sale for AGES until one day, it was. what a glorious day that was.
