Kyle,

I know at least a few of us have G4's. Most viruses are written for PCs. I
don't think they are carried by any word processing programs, but I can
understand boycotting different companies.

What degree are you going for? Just curious. Yes, I know what happened to the

Mike,
I'm moving back home. Well actually i'm not moving back to West Virginia, i'll be moving to Pikeville Kentucky which is in Eastern Kentucky. Pikeville is a small town about 30 minutes South of Williamson West Virginia. I'll be moving in January or February. How far are you from Pikeville?
Take care!

Re: Off topic (Moving)

Pikeville?  Pikeville!  You got some kin there?  I believe Randolph McCoy of the famous feudin' McCoy's is buried there in Pikeville, and the area is well known for its 'black gold' production - and I'm not talking about Sansevieria!   We're not going to be exactly neighbors.  I give it 200 miles without adding up all those little mileage numbers on my Rand McNally.   Are you going to box and mail your Sans, or pack them in a U-Haul?  You need to be careful as it is starting to freeze here now and then at night!  If I can help in any way, you know I will!  I'm retired, so my time is most flexible.

Re: Really dark, almost black Sansevieria

Things are slow here so I will venture a reply.  Whenever someone says they found a Sansevieria at Home Depot or Lowes, I automatically think "trifasciata" and probably plain ol' trifasciata, plain ol' Hahnii, Laurentii, Compacta, or (rarely) Coral.  Still, I always walk by the Sans display slowly hoping for a miracle.
Incidentally, Karole Brooks has  S.Hahnii 'Pearl Young' for sale on her ebay site.  It is listed under the name 'Starlight'.
Oh....Old Time Pottery had an ad in the paper here today for a new shipment of pots!  Beautiful pots deserving of a nice clump of Sans.
And finally, euchre is the principal card game of choice for me.  I like it because I only begin with 5 cards in my hand, so there are fewer choices to make.  I only cheat when I can get away with it.

Mike, about Michael B

Mike, perhaps you missed my post some days ago about Michael B.  He asked me to relay to the group that Gateway has
agreed to return his money and take the computer back, and his Mac isn't working either.  So he'll be offline til he gets
a new computer, til further notice.

It's good that he's finally been able to resolve this issue, it's been months of intense frustration for him.  I'm surprised it's a Gateway that's given him so much trouble, they've been at the top of every survey and computer magazine review for years, along with Dell.

Cold Weather

Yes, Norma . .  more excellent advice.  I scanned Brown's book, but as you say, I need to "extract" information about climate and soil from it.  And as you say, do it with a grain of salt because he was never there in Africa.  I'm not so sure putting energy unto obtaining "shell-based" soil will be worth the effort. although who knows, maybe the calcium carbonate will be something a few plants like.  Perhaps diatomaceous earth might be a good substitute. Here's a webs link for buying it.  http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=diatomaceous+earth&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler
I've been watching the low temps here in Torrance and I don't think its dipped to the 30s yet.  But over a week with lows in the low 40s is really unusual. My hahnii types are in the shed with the plastic roof, but still no heat. They look a little ragged, but seem to be hanging on.  My masoniana variegata has bit the dust although it put up a non-variegated pup which seems healthy. Almost all my Sans are showing pups.  I expect one hell of a lot of growth this spring.  Of the 9 leaf cuttings you gave me earlier this year, only two turned yellow and died.  As everybody says, these Sans sure have a strong will to live.

Dale I think your temps. are milder than mine,  we went down to 30F the night before last.  But mine are under cover, and closed up with a heater going all night.  I call up the   weather bureau every night when I think the temps. will dip.
Dale look in the Brown book and see where they grow that will give you an idea  what temp. they will tolerate.  Some say dry and shade, others, grow in coral, other  in tropical forest. etc. it's a clue.
We all need to read that book and pay attention what is really being said.  It takes a while, I have been trying for the past ten years.  We need to ask more questions to Hermine.  I can't read Botanical Latin.  There is a lot of abbreviations, botanical descriptions.  Dale it's just not that easy, nor in black and white, and the man never was in the field, the descriptions were from all dried specimens. Some times only parts of specimens.  Dale for instance on page 25 it says that S. gracilis from Tropical Africa. British East Africa,  German East Africa. Without locality, so some of the species will have good locations, which will give us an idea how to grow them.  I guess I'll need to go out a buy a bag of ground coral, or shells, white pumice may be related, Chuck doesn't remember the formula for that, I'll try and look it up.    I think we will need to go through the book species by species and look each one up, that was the purpose of printing this book out.
The next one S. rorida  says "Italian Somaliland.  In sandy places on the coast near Magadoxo .  Along the east coast of Somaliland which would be a very warm area close to the Equator. (Mogadiscio) which is the Capital, almost on the Equator.  So you see, those of you who have Brown's book should be able to look it up, and go to the map as I just did.  Norma

Good advice . .  as usual. I can see if I want to continue to collect Sans I'm going to have to find a way to keep them warmer during the winter. Although I checked Carol Causey's plants today and even though they're all outdoors under cover, most look pretty decent. All except the concinna. Hers are like mine - pretty bedraggled.

Dale give them time, as they grow, you toss out the ugly mama, and
only keep the best three offsets, do this every two years.  I did
this the last year. That is why I was able to give you plants,  or
I'll  cut up the leaves to start the new clean heads that I will use
for show. Mine will not be moved for the next three year now.

Russ,

I know this is xtra off-topic, but I think we want details on Michael. How did
he sound? Like relieved his frustration was nearing an end, or depressed that
it's totally not-do-able right now. Worry, worry, worry.
