Hello all,

Sansevieria were my first entry into he succulent plant world. Don't
remember what it was that made me stop by Manny Singers place in the San
Fernando valley maybe 30 years ago but if I remember correctly I walked
out with a S. sweinfurthii and maybe a couple of others. At last count I
had 42 different plants with only 7 being trifaciata varieties. My last
acquisition is doing poorly after a year and I'm wondering if anyone has
any special hints as to how to make S. eiliana happy? Also I've always
wondered when to stop watering in the fall. Temperatures have dropped
to a chilling 64 degrees in the house and most of the plants are just
now sending up new leaves. They need the water now don't they?

Re: Mombassa

Hi,

I have no idea why the spell-checker corrects Mobasa to read Mombassa. All maps show it as Mombasa and so do
the signs in Mombasa itself.
Anyway, I think you will have to go out of Mombasa to get Sansevierias. There are two sanseveirias nearby.
One is Sasnevieria arborescens and the other one is Sansevieria conspicua. I have found the latter only in
the Arabuko-Sokoke Park growing in practically sand in semi-shade and paper thin. the park is in the
direction to Malindi. Perhaps difficult to see among the other plants. You will find good populations of
S, arborescens nearby growing in front garden, but be careful and ask the people living there before
taking any plant as they are (rightly so) somewhat protective of something they actually never piad
attention to, since they never planted it. We would act the same way if we saw someone coming and taking a
plant without permission..
If you go in the direction of of Voi, towards nairobi, at about more than 50 km you will find S. powellii.
Best of lucks.

Juan

Austrian Black came from Loyce Andrews the Hoya Woman, who had originally
named it Australian Black, until somehow i found out it came from a German
collector. I know Austria is not GERMANY but it is closer than Australia,
and somebody had made a mistake in transcribing the name...

WHAT IS A VETERAN (fwd)

WHAT IS A VETERAN?

(Attributed to a Marine Corps chaplain, Father Denis
Edward O'Brian)

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a
missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.
Others may carry the evidence inside them, a pin holding a
bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps
another sort of inner steel: the soul's alloy forged in the
refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have
kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell
a vet just by looking. What is a vet?

A vet is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi
Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored
personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

A vet is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden
planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a
hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of
exquisite bravery near the 38th Parallel.

A vet is the nurse who fought against futility and went to
sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

A vet is the POW who went away one person and came back
