Re: Sun gigabit ethernet technologies

Basically, it breaks down like this:

CAT5 is rated upto 100Mbps
CAT5e is rated upto 1000Mbps
CAT6 not sure, but if you want minimal packet loss etc at 1000Mbps, this is
the way to go.

This is the cable rating btw, in case you don't know.

As regards hardware, the Sun gigaswift cards aint too expensive, especially
on ebay.

They're two different gigabit media. 'Copper' is RJ-45 plugs on a
Cat-5e/Cat-6 cable; 'fiber' is an older fiber optic medium that probably
isn't of much interest to you.

Help - lp command

Hi,

We are using licensed cups for our Unix NIS environment, connected
with 10 printers.

a2ps,lpr commands are printing the jobs well.

But lp and
lp -d commands are just sending the requests, but not printing the jobs.

What
are the configurations missing....

Thanks

REgards
Vijay.

Patch application and maintaenance

Hello All,

I just wanted some ideas and feedback from the list on the policies you have in your organization on Solaris
patch application, how you document and test before you do it. Is there a tool which you use to automate this
process and etc. I am trying to stream line the process and would like to come up with a good plan based on your
preactices and suggestions.

Thanks

Hello,

> i think. also, sca drives are supposed to self-terminate.

No, they aren't. The termination is integrated in the "backplane" with the 80p
connectors. If you use an SCA-68p/50p adapter an addtional active terminator
is required.

My configuration in an SPARCengine Ultra AXi:

68p connector on system board --- 68p harddisk --- cd-rom drive with 68p-50p
adapter --- 68p active terminator

The cable is 68p. The harddisk is either 68p UW-SCSI or 80p (SCA) with 68p-SCA
adaptor.

You can try to force single-ended (SE) mode by setting a jumper on the drive.
Probably the drive remained in LVD (low voltage differential) mode.
For example the Seagate ST373405LC (73GB) has a "FORCE SINGLE ENDED" jumper.

I had never problems using LVD/SE harddisks in my Ultra 1, 2 or 30.

You might try changing the jumper for delay start, as a final test.
I know when I put some newer SCSI (well, circa 1998 drives) in
older Macs (IIci), I had trouble where the disks didn't spin up
soon enough so that the OS would recognize them. I would
expect the Sun to be better about that though.

I wonder if maybe the PSU is not outputting enough voltage for
the disk?

Just tossing out ideas as I've never heard of this kind of problem
before.

suns are a lot better about that. i always jumper my disks for spin
up on selection, to spread out the power surge on cold boot. the obp
then sends scsi start when it gets to the drive.

it was quite noticeable on my old sparc2 under sunos4. you'd see the
mem test, then hear the root disk spin up, then after a second or two
the /usr disk.
