What happens if you do probe-scsi at the OK prompt?

  Is the HD spinning up?

the HD is a 50-pin scsi drive, any 50 pin, preferably low profile (1
inch) 7200 rpm or 5400 rpm drive will work in it.

Haven't tried it yet. I need a null-modem cable to see what is happening on the console. The video card seems
OK but I cannot get video output on a VGA monitor (even with output-device=screen). Anyway, for now I could
only get a female-female DB25-DB9 null-modem cable. And, since this SS10 has also a female COM port, I need
to order a male-male converter. Well, this is troublesome but I think I will get it working.

> Is the HD spinning up?

I will check it as soon as I get the SS10's console shown on my PC.

Thanks! The HDD that was shipped with this SS10 is high (3.5 cm), and I was just interested if I buy a rather old
50-pin SCSI HDD (4 Gb), will it be backwards-compatible with SS10?

Sorry to sound very lame, but this SS10 is the first Sun machine of my own, and it came with no documentation.

Re: SS10 - need help with SCSI

Not sure where this is going but JIC:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SS10/SS10.html
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SS10/4mSYSTEM_Sstation_10.h
tml

As to drives avoid any differential drives (The latest are LVD drives,
and the earlier are HVD: H = High and L=Low).

Also check out the web for more SS10 info. Keywords: Solaris 2 FAQ -
Plenty of content on SS10. As to a monitor, if you can track down a
variable frequency one (like a NEC MultiSync) and I assume you have a
13W3-vga adapter then you can utilize the onboard video.

Good Luck

Re: SS10 - need help with SCSI

Thanks, Andre! I found an SS10 parts breakdown page
(http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SS10/4mSYSTEM_Sstation_10.html).
The HDD type was stated there, it was a Seagate ST11200N, SCSI-2.

There is an IBM SCSI-3 50-pin HDD (IBM DCAS-34300) available at a local
store. Will it work with SS10?

Uh... The monitor LED does not even change from yellow to green. I still
think I will have to use the console.

Yes

if you have the keyboard hooked up, hold down Stop-N as you power up the
machine

Re: SS10 - need help with SCSI

Hi:

Given:

http://www.comsell.com/ftp/dcas_ps.pdf

It appears that you should be fine (speaking in terms of the SCSI
specs).

As to the disk capacity, If you plan to use Solaris 8 or greater, I
would definetely consider 9 gig drive.

Also check out:

http://www.net-kitchen.com/pipermail/suns-at-home/2000-September.txt

regarding your display issues. It's possible that PROM settings
(NVRAM) may need to be changed.

Good Luck.

Okay, thanks, I will consider buying this HDD. It's the only thing I
could find around anyway. The PDF doc will be VERY valuable.

I have OpenBSD on my mind, if I get it installed and running, the 4.3 Gb
HDD will be quite sufficient for a small home web server. If it fails, I
have Solaris 2.6 as an option. I also have Solaris 8 but I doubt it that
it would run smoothly on this SS10.

Did you have a keyboard plugged in, it checks for keyboard for the
screen otherwise it goes to serial port.

Be aware that I have experienced problems with hme interfaces under
OpenBSD. le interfaces work just fine, but the hme driver just don't
seem happy at all. My experience is a hme will work under OpenBSD if
you force 10Mbit, but at 100Mbit you'll see a third of the throughput
you were getting at 10Mbit.
