V880 -> serial connection via ethernet cable???

Hi,

I need to connect our V880 to a Cisco access server
via an ethernet cable connection.
The problem is, that the V880 has only one serial
port and it's not an RJ-45 one but a 25 pin serial.

I have a converter from that 25 pin serial to an
RJ-45 but it doesn't work.
If I just plug the cable to the converter, I still
can't see the OBP on the server.

Do you have any idea on how I can solve this issue?

Thanks!

John

/etc/shadow encrypted passwd field

Hello listers,
I need some info on the meaning and the difference between *LK*
(locked) and NP (no passwd???) on /etc/shadow encrypted passwd field.
Seems that login to account with either one is not possible cause we
didn't know the real (unencrypted) passwd.

Thanks,

RE: V880 -> serial connection via ethernet cable???

Hi,

You should try different serial connectors/cables.
this because some models have a different pin layout,
You could also change the cables that you use, it should not matter although
some times it does

Cheers
Patrick

Isn't it obvious, the differences in meaning between LOCKED and NO
PASSWORD ?

Don't they teach that a * is an invalid character in a crypted password
string anymore?

If either *LK* or NP exist in the password field of /etc/shadow, then a
password does not exist for that account and must be set with the
passwd command.

This is UNIX 101.

You will need to research the pinout of the Cisco device (assume that the
Sun is standard serial pinout). Get DB hoods that allow you to build the
pinout to suit your needs and make a custom adapter. Black Box is one
company that sells the hoods, Radio Shack used to and may still.

You will also need an RS232 primer, use google. Be aware that the Sun and
the Cisco will expect hardware flow control signals so you will need to
build an 8-wire adapter, not a 3-wire.

Re: /etc/shadow encrypted passwd field

Thanks for the lesson, Dale :)
The reason I asked the question is because I notice that ssh using
publickey behave differently when the account set to *LK*, i.e it will
not let me in.
A quick google search answer my question, obviously someone alraedy
ask the question in this list.
Another lesson learned: "Search Google First".

Thanks,

Looks like my pricing was way off. $125, shipping included.

disk error

Hi All,

I am getting the following error, when I boot the server,
/dev/rdsk/c3t1d0s0: No such device or address
can't open /dev/rdsk/c3t1d0s0
/dev/rdsk/c3t1d0s0 can't check file system
unexpected inconsistency;run fsck
manually.

When I run fsck on the particular slice, it gave me "can't open
/dev/rdsk/c3t1d0s0.

What could be the solution?

Regards
Vijay

Re: disk error

Hi Vijay,

may be dead ...

check from ok-prompt with "probe-scsi-all"
if controller 3 show a disk with target 1
or boot the maschine in single-user-mode
and run "format", which show the available
disks.

network install problems..

Hello all..

I am trying to use a Solaris 9 install/boot server that I have created
on my Blade 100 to install Solaris 9 via the network on my Netra t1 105
(new web server).

I have followed the Solaris instructions, and have had no problems with
that.. (other then the SunONE version of the Solaris disks not having the
files to create a boot server, and me taking a year to figure out to try
the IPlanet disks that I wasnt planning on using)...

I have also followed Sun's trouble shooting guide <at> the back of the
Solaris install manual.. <at> the OK prompt I have 'setenv diag-switch? true'
and 'setenv boot-file " "' ... the only thing that doesnt make sense is
that it says to 'ensure that the diag-switch is set to off and to true'..
well i have set it to true, but am not quite sure what they mean by off??

the following is diplayed on the netra <at> boot:

Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 360MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.24 ME, 128 MB memory installed, Serial #12744718.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:c2:78:e, Host ID: 80c2780e.

Boot device: net File and args:
Using External Transceiver - Link Up.

Server IP address: 10.10.10.7
Client IP address: 10.10.10.20
