[Q] how to assign disk paration location on dsik?

On IBM AIX system, I can assign disk inner or ourside to a logical
volume. Does their has way to do the same thing on Solaris 8 or 9 to
assign inner or outside disk to a partition?

Thanks

Hi

With Solaris diak partitions, you allocate the physical cylinders, so choose
where on disk you want the partition to go.

Veritas Volume Manager ?
maybe Solaris Volume Manager in Solaris 9 - but I
haven't had a chance to look at it closely yet.

Oracle performance replies

In reply to Q below about the 280R vs. V240... note that the 280R
processors have 8MB L2 cache vs. 1MB L2 cache for the UltraSparc IIIi
processors in the V240... other things being equal, the L2 cache
increase should help the 280R be faster... Also, check the memory speed
& compare... faster is better. You'll need to look at how many PCI
slots for SCSI/FC HBAs, too. There's always the cost factor to figure
in -- how much $$ is your budget?

We are compare the E280 and V240 as our ORACLE application server. Based
on on SUN engineer told me the performance should NOT much difference. i
would like listen to your opinion?

Thanks.

Also, someone asked about PERF numbers, which are important for
Oracle... I'm pretty sure that Oracle doesn't make (any/much?) use of
floating point, so it's only the INT numbers that matter. IIRC, the
SpecINT is for 1 CPU & the the Rates are multi-cpu. So, it depends on
if you're looking at a multi-CPU system or a single-CPU system.

New Mailing List (sorta): SALES

Due to request, I've re-created the SALES mailing list, for a central place
to buy/sell/trade hardware. Personal FS/FT listings are still okay on
the GEEKS and RESCUE lists.

Commercial advertising on the SALES list is *NOT* allowed, unless the vendor/
business in question contacts me first for permission.

Anyway, the list:

RE: New Mailing List (sorta): SALES

Hi Bill/All

The main reason why I would like to have us listed on any Sun for sale list
is that you occaisionally see requests for UK suppliers of second user kit
and there are not that many in the UK who actually carry kit and know
(within reason) what they are are doing with it, hence giving the customer a
level of support as well as warranty.

What I would suggest is some sort of regular email which lists suppliers (by
country) who are worth contacting. It would be good to compile a list based
on endorsements much as Ebay does (we are up to 530+ and counting on Ebay
and it helps enormously with customer confidence).

Anyway just a thought and would be useful to me as we do purchase a fair
amount in the US/Europe and always looking for alternatives who have stock.

Anyone have a view on this?

That's what the Vendor Directory on sunhelp.org is for:

http://www.sunhelp.org/info-vendors.php

You can see there where I have the vendors listed as "Sponsors", "Contributors"
or "Other".

The SALES list is a mailing list (just like the GEEKS, RESCUE, or SUNHELP
lists) to be used for individual sales listings, not a general directory
of people who sell equipment.

How Do I......

I have a new sun server as some may know. I am about ready to give
up on Raid. $2K was just not budgetted for. So here is what I want to do. I
want to make a file system that spans the 4 disks in my D2 array. This array
consists of 4 36 GB drives. I would like to mount a /newdir on the system
where /newdir will span all four disks making the volume size of /newdir be
around 144GB. Can I do this? what is the command/tool for it? If not I will
have to mount the four disks seperatly.

Secondly. Many moons ago when I was working on my degree I learned
how to send my X windows sessions from the sun servers at school to my
desktop remotely. This, I found out, was not a terribly good thing over
dial-up so I gave it up and just did it command line. My boss on the other
hand is not as bright as me and needs a GUI. Can anyone point me to the docs
on how to do this again? I would love to earn the Kudos for setting this up.

	Thanks.
